Redefining the word awful

I will never like the taste of the cacao Soylent, but it's at least survivable. This chocolate brownie was disgusting. I threw up after trying one. Weeks later I found the box and before tossing the $30 monster, I decided I ought to give it another go. I couldn't choke it down. I tossed it. Fortunately, Amazon refunded my money. Kudos to Amazon.

Predominately a sugar flavor

I have to agree with others that this doesn't have a nice flavor-it's simply too sugar-like when instead it could e a nice cacao/chocolate. It really just tastes like a block of chewy sugar or something. I'm not impressed.

I love the Soylent drinks and I order them cases at a time so I never run out. I was skeptical about the Square; but I ordered two cases because they were half off during Prime Day. I was right to be skeptical. I don't know what category of food this fits under. It's only about the size of four "Starburst" if you arranged them in a square (I thought they'd be bigger). They're not big enough to settle a hunger pain, so all they really are is a calorie bomb. You might as well just buy a Snickers bar.

Also, the Square is covered with some weird oily substance.

Fortunately my second case didn't ship by the time I got the first one and I was able to cancel that order. Yes, even at half price, these aren't worth it.

Citrus Berry very good

Smaller than I expected (compared to a typical protein bar) but fairly filling for their size. I found the Citrus berry flavor to be pretty good (kinda reminds me of less sugary fruit loops). Soft and chewy but with a pleasant gentle crunchiness similar to small bits of puffed rice. Nice to find a protein bar that has more protein than sugar but doesn't need to be refrigerated.

Price seems steep at $30, but it is probably not too far off similar options at $1 a bar. It would be nice if they sold introductory packs in smaller sizes though so you don't have to invest $30 in something you might not like. Worked out for me this time, but it makes me hesitant to try the other flavors.

Tastes good until the aftertaste hits you

I drink the cacao version of Soylent regularly and think they taste great. These however, initially they have a satisfying chew with little bits of what I assume is crispy rice. Great texture and ok flavor for a fake brownie. On that first bite you get hit with a pretty standard brownie flavor and think all is well. Just you wait. The aftertaste is one of the most manufactured and chemical tasting things I've ever had the displeasure of tasting. It lasts for ages and I genuinely had to rinse my mouth out with something stronger to get the horrendous flavor to go away.

Sorry Soylent, go back to the drawing board with this one and come back with something that's actually worth wasting calories on.

It's all about the crunch.

The flavor of these isn't going to make you go over the moon. They're meant to be a healthy snack or in-between to a responsible meal. Much like no one ever talks about how delicious kale is, or how awesome carrots taste, the flavor is not the primary driver for why someone would eat these, and I think a lot of reviewers and purchasers buy these looking for a "healthy candy bar." Don't buy these to have healthy candy bars. That's not what this is.

Instead, look at buying these as a good way to prevent a sweet-tooth binge, or something to stop your stomach from rumbling when you're a couple hours from dinner. Buy them for an after-workout snack, or if you're looking for a good on-the-go supplemental energy bar. In that way, these are great. The taste is good enough, delicious at first, with a kind of slight medicine after taste. It is a pseudo energy bar after all.

But the crunch is delicious an surprising. The first time you bite into one, you'll notice that they're soft, and they kind of have the same exterior as a Quest bar. But once you hit the center, you'll notice that there are crunchy bits in there that really vary the texture and give this a "pop" that other energy bars and supplements just don't have. It's great, and a welcome switch-up from other bars.

Just weird

I drink a lot of the chocolate and strawberry soylents so I was hoping these would be good too. They just have a weird texture and taste. Most likely won't reorder, which is very said as I was excited to have a snack and the probiotics.

Comment on Chocolate brownies: I have had worse chocolate brownies before, they really are not that bad and I thought rather tasty. I bought them for travel and on the go meals. You just have to remember small square is 100 calories. I don't think they are too sweet. They are better than most meal bars I have tried. I read that some people don't like the texture, but I have no problem with it. I recommend them.

I did not expect the box to be this small. I paid $30 for a minuscule amount of food.
