Product Description
Richard Betts is one of fewer than two hundred master sommeliers in the world, but he’s no wine snob and he hates wine-speak. In the first book of its kind, he helps readers scratch and sniff their way to expertise by introducing the basic components of wine—the fruits, the wood, the earth—enabling anyone to discover the difference between a Syrah and a Sangiovese and get the glass they love every time. Humorously illustrated, with 16 scents, this irresistible gift puts the fun back in wine fundamentals.Features

This is like an 8 page book with only the most common and obvious aromas as scratch and sniff. Very basic info for beginner wine drinkers. Not much use for anyone who has been to a produce aisle or done a wine tasting before.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but this is awesome.

A scratch and sniff guide to wine? Really? It seemed like a silly concept at first. Then I thought about how many times I have heard other drinkers talking about what they smell in their glasses while I felt a little left out.
This book instantly made me smarter about wine. From identifying the range of fruits in the nose to understanding more about how the wood barrels and the dirt affect the scent, I learned so much.
In the back is a fold out map to the understand the smells of the entire wine world. You start in the middle and "sniff" your way out to the edge learning how to identify the types of wine you like most.
I love this book. Keeping it close by as I open more bottles and definitely picking up copies for friends. Highly recommend.
Effectively breaks down what can be an intimidating hobby to explore (tasting wine!)

I received this little wine book as a gift a couple of years ago and really enjoyed how it breaks down the process of "tasting" wine. It definitely has helped to give me a good guide as to how to consider all the components of a wine and it's flavor and overall experience. Since then, I have gifted it to a few folks. Definitely recommend for anyone interested in wine, even if you already have a good working knowledge of wine, or if you are a beginner (or looking for a gift for these types of people). Highly enjoyable, easy read, quick reference on wine tasting. We keep a copy in our restaurant for our staff to reference as well.

I thought FOR SURE that there would be more sniffers on this book....red/black cherry, floral, leather, grass, minerality, pear, stone fruit, Dill (had no smell) Vanilla, Bacon (no smell), butter (no smell),
This is an hysterical gift!

When a friend showed this to me, I just had to have it. I have Italian relatives that are consistently stunned by American culture, and are very snobbish about their own in comparison. Yet they live here, in the US. Why? Because Italy is chaos - beautiful and delicious, yes, but absolutely chaotic, and far from perfect. And all they talk about is food and wine, constantly - all speaking at the same time around the table. I love them to be sure, but I prefer the States. We have fun here. And things like this book are conceived and marketed and successful here. It's brilliant. It's what makes this country great.
Anyway, this book is bound to be a scream at parties, and our Italian friends won't believe this book exists unless I can show it to them. I have no illusions that it will serve any other purpose other than to entertain my friends. If you really believe this will teach you about wine and make you an "expert", then uh... good luck to you. The drive-thru is about two miles down on the left. : )
All we need now is a scratch and sniff book on sex education . . . oh wait . . . didn't something like that come out in the 70s?
Fun and clever, nicely unpretentious

Fun and clever, nicely unpretentious...makes a good gift. The style/format is "a children's-style book for adults" to make wine become more of "a grocery item rather than a luxury item." It will give a total wine novice an amusing starting point. (You can literally scratch and sniff smells in the book. Kind cool and you wish there were many more smells to scratch and sniff. False back to 1980s stickers books.)
While the info is interesting and useful, in a foundation sense, the education is sparse with capitals "S-P-A-R-S-E". Also, I could not give it five stars for me because It is more clever than useful, for those with some knowledge. However, if that's you, file it under "most fun wine novelty item / book ever".
Not what I expected.

I bought this because I'm a novice at tasting. I have a hard time naming the various smells in a glass.I thought this book might bring me a little closer to building that memory bank of smell that is so important!
If you know absolutely nothing, I can see this being an okay introduction or cute gift, but the title itself is very misleading.
The scratch and sniff areas smell like children's stickers or markers, and they weren't very vibrant or accurate.
Maybe I got a bad one...

The scratch and sniff portions were hit or miss for me. Some of them seemed very faint or had no smell. One of them was visibly wavy and crusty looking. I knew it would be a novelty, so I didn't have super high expectations, but it was also why I chose to buy this book and it feels like a bit of a waste. The content is nice, but best suited for completely new wine drinkers.

After one month past the expected date of delivery the book finally arrived. There were a bunch of price stickers stuck to the cover that I can't peel off without ripping the cover but other than that it's a fun book to read through, way more informational than expected. It even comes with a wine map that charts all the different types of wine!
A pretty fun book

My background: I've worked in wine and food research for about two years, and really enjoy drinking wine.
This book is pretty fun, and certainly helps convey the author's main point that wine should be an accessible "every day" drink. The book covers the major aromas and flavors in wine, and comes with an extremely nice wine decision tree (well, wheel) in the back of the book to help readers make decisions on which wine to buy. The book has some minor inaccuracies (tongue maps have been disproven for a pretty long time) but that's probably not why you're buying it. Overall a worthwhile coffee table book.
Love it

I heard about this book from a sommelier and wine representative. Apparently he is friends with the author. He brought the book into my work for everyone to see, and I loved it. It's scratch and sniff for wine lovers. It breaks information down to the basics, but good basics. The book offers simple information, easy to understand, and offers colors and smells to help understand wine. It helps you identify things like green pepper and pear in the wine that might be missed. It's also a lot of fun. I ended up buying four copies, gave away three as gifts and kept one for myself.
