Product Description

Something to be happy about: This mesmerizing bestseller is revised and updated. Originally published 25 years ago (happy anniversary!) from a list that Barbara Ann Kipfer started making as a child, it’s the book that marries obsession with happiness. And it now has 4,000 fresh and more current reasons to be happy:

Rabbit tracks in the snow.
Kiteboarding and kitesurfing.
Caramel gelato.
Scoring super-high on a Scrabble turn.
Babies burping.
Summer storms.
White cupcakes with multicolored sprinkles.
Big red barns.
20 minutes all to yourself.

No opinions, no explanations, no asides, no footnotes, editorializing, or proselytizing. Just the simple premise of a list of things that make us smile. With its chunky shape, striking black-and-white cover, and 100 whimsical illustrations by Pierre Le-Tan, the new 14,000 Things is an irresistible catalog of good thoughts completely updated to reflect today’s world—and an uplifting gift for people of all moods and all ages.

It's not about the content, it's about the message
by Kim Dickerson (5 out of 5 stars)

If I had bought this book a year ago, I would have hated it. Probably because I didn't have anything in my life to be particularly unhappy about and this is just a bunch of random things that some random person I don't know finds interesting or appealing or enticing.

But then my mom passed away about 6 months ago, out of the blue. After that, the things that had made me happy before didn't seem to matter or to be able to make me happy anymore. It put things into perspective. Without her, I didn't know how to not just be completely sad.

I found and ordered this book on a whim, just reaching out for anything that might be able to make things a little better.

I took the first blank page and actually wrote out why I needed help being happy and what I was feeling and going through. Then, each night before bed, I made myself read about 10 "things to be happy about." And I made myself write my own 10 things to be happy about right next to them, in the margins. I made myself do it every single night. And through my tears, I did find 10 things to be happy about each night, even if it was hard to get into that mindset. It helped me end my day on a positive note and to go to sleep thinking about things that were a little brighter and a little lighter.

I was still sad (and still am, and part of me will always be), but it helped me to slow down, stop for a minute, and focus on what I did and do still have to be happy about in my life.

Honestly, the 14,000 things to be happy about could have said anything. S'mores. Rainbows. The color orange. Extra long hugs. Slurping spaghetti noodles. It didn't matter to me. But the book in general - the idea and theme of it - was what helped me. I just needed to remind myself of what amazing people I still have around me and of the beautiful things in the world - which also made me remind myself of how big the world is and how I'm not alone in going through this. And not only do I feel a little happier now, but I have also identified potential changes in my life that might make me happier and I'm taking risks and making those changes to reach for that happiness. And I identified things in my life that didn't make me as happy as they should and removed myself from them (or am working to do so).

This book is just about reminding yourself of why you should be happy, because there really is so much to be appreciative of. And it did a great job of that for me.

Don't ignore the Green lights in your life
by Samala (5 out of 5 stars)

I read this book every day. a page a day, with a highlighter.. then my S.O takes a pen and initials what he likes and we come back around and talk about the things we picked... it's a good reminder that even when life goes sideways (and it will, just give a minute), there are lots of things to be happy about.. they don't stop being "good" just because life got crappy. They retain their goodness despite the crap of life.. be intentional about injecting happiness in your life, ESPECIALLY when crap hits the fan!

enjoy

A waste of money
by Nelle (1 out of 5 stars)

Of course there are some things within the 14,000 mentions to be happy about but the majority are silly and absurd... boiling water for coffee, sweater dryers, using a shoe to hammer a nail in the wall, straightening the pantry, petri dishes, etc. etc. etc. Save your money and simply think about little things that make you happy.

I've come around: it's all about mind over matter
by Jane in Milwaukee,Top Contributor: Jewelry Making (5 out of 5 stars)

At first I had to be in the mood to be happy: literally, if I started pondering whether some items in a row were truly happy-making, I could think my way out of it. But I discovered if I want to find happy thoughts that stop my mind from ruminating on bad things in my life, if I was to open my mind and heart to simple happy thoughts, this is a go-to book. Some of it is silly. Some of it is profound. Some of it makes me feel nostalgic, even wistful...but all this means is that it's not a purely superficial book if you don't want it to be. But sometimes you just want to land on items that make you smile or even giggle. Every page has several examples of that. I wonder how long it took the author to amass all these happy thoughts. And why is it so universal?

Love it!

Love it! Bought the first edition 25 years ago - for myself, and then an extra 50 copies to give to Family and Friends. Everyone Loved it!

So happy to know there is a new edition with an additional of new 4000 things To Be Happy About. Giving my dog-ear first copy to the local thrift shop and can't wait to read the new "4000".... and of course planning to buy more as gifts too.

This kind of book may not appeal to Everyone as they are merely 1-10 words eg "lovingness, ripe fruit, thinking with someone, warm sun and seaspray, not burping at the dinner table, keeping a smile on your face until the shutter clicks" - but each word/s has/have always made me SMILE.

Also note that as the Author is American, this is in American English and American Vocabulary - that some of my non-American Friends may have harder time appreciating it.

Awesome little book

This is still my little "go-to" book when I need a little gift "under $20", for gift exchanges and things like that. It is very different than a lot of "list" books. It's quirky and unique. You'd have to start looking thru it to actually "get it". Everyone I've ever given it to absolutely loves it. My first copy fell apart from overuse, and I'm on my second book. It's all marked up and well loved now. I belong to a "pay it forward" group, and I've sent out 2 of these, along with a very cool bookmark to ladies that I've drawn their names. I'll be ordering more. Soon......

Good on your desk
by Hawaiian silver (5 out of 5 stars)

This really nice to keep on your desk at work. There are a lot of things that can make us smile and it just feels better. There are so many to choose from, too, but not all will apply to everyone. For me getting happy about succotash or scrapple is a non-starter: I'm from the west coast and we don't eat that stuff, but for someone from the south or midwest, could be a great childhood memory.

This is a great book
by Ready set shop!!! (5 out of 5 stars)

I use to not like this book because it is so random but with grabbing a highlighter the random became apart of the real experience of getting to know myself even better. I am not an unhappy person, this book randomness is fun and when listing out my favorites, my friend and I had some laughs. There are things in here that remind you what you like that you cant always think about and it has things in here that can help you improve yourself. I found this book to be a very helpful resource to turn when you are being ungrateful. I would recommend this book to everyone who love list as much as I. Give it a chance to people who don't like list, add somethings that make you happy high light and you will enjoy this book. I also recommend this book for people who need things to be happy about, who are in a bad place.

Now I give it to students who need reminded that there's always something to be happy about!
by Brigitte Kennedy (5 out of 5 stars)

I received this in college along with highlighters and a pen as a gift from a friend. I've highlighted and written in the margins for years. Now I give it to students who need reminded that there's always something to be happy about!
