A humorous look at 50 common North American dumb birds: For those who have a disdain for birds, or bird lovers with a sense of humor, this snarky, illustrated handbook is equal parts profane, funny, and—let's face it—true. Featuring 50 common North American birds, such as the White-Breasted Butt Nugget and the Goddamned Canada Goose (or White-Breasted Nuthatch and Canada Goose for the layperson), Matt Kracht identifies all the idiots in your backyard and details exactly why they suck with humorous, yet angry, ink drawings. With The Field Guide to Dumb Birds of North America, you won't need to wonder what all that racket is anymore!
- Each entry is accompanied by facts about a bird's (annoying) call, its (dumb) migratory pattern, its (downright tacky) markings, and more.
- The essential guide to all things wings with migratory maps, tips for birding, musings on the avian population, and the ethics of birdwatching.
- Matt Kracht is an amateur birder, writer, and illustrator who enjoys creating books that celebrate the humor inherent in life's absurdities. Based in Seattle, he enjoys gazing out the window at the beautiful waters of Puget Sound and making fun of birds.

- A perfect coffee table or bar top conversation-starting book

vulgar birding bookby birder (1 out of 5 stars)

I enjoy a wide variety of humor. The occasional "f-bomb" does not bother me. This book is an example that too many vulgar words are simply NOT funny. Being a birdwatcher, I was looking forward to a great read. I actually purchased this book as a birthday present for my birdwatching spouse. I had to apologize for my selection. I have read this book once, and that was one time too many. This book will end up in the "charity" box. What a disappointment. Don't buy this book. Donate the money you save to a birding organization instead.
"Profane Language" is an understatement

I thought, from reading the advert and a few "Look Inside" pages that this would be mildly snarky. It was much more profanity-laced as the book went on. Nothing I could enjoy, but, a couple of my siblings find it delightful... all the more because I am so straight-laced and pure of heart that they'd never have expected me to pick out such a book.
I still like the drawings, but the "F" bombs were too much for my delicate sensibilities.

As an ornithologist with a cheesy sense of humor, this book really appealed to me. I pre-ordered it and once it arrived and I had wiped away the tears of joy after laughing my ass off, I immediately bought two more copies to give to my coworkers.
Hilarious AND Informative!

I have a fascination with birds and comedy. This book suffices BOTH of my desires AND THEN SOME! Beautifully written and factual; while also including details illustrations to accompany the witty writing.
This is my new favorite bathroom read. I learn and laugh. Highly recommended for all bird lovers and even bird haters! All will enjoy reading this book and gain new insight into the squawking and annoying beasts that loom overhead.
Witty, educational, hilarious!!

Hands down one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. Matt Kracht is brilliant. This book will make you laugh out loud. I've read pages to my husband and we've both been in stitches. I've given this book to a friend who loved it so much she took it to her local coffee shop and read it out loud to her friends. It's witty, snarky, insightful, and entertaining. The drawings are edgy and fun. I can't recommend it enough for those with a dark and dry sense of humor. If you are a 'birder' with no sense of humor, then don't buy it. :-)

A book about annoying birds written in a way that has you giggling the whole time? This book is hilarious and clever and really quite a little piece of genius. I bought 2 copies for my bird loving friends (heee!) and am ordering more. One I keep for myself for my coffee table stack so I can spread the good snark. I also love that in his own way, Matt Kracht is quite the expert on birds and could only write this book if he truly appreciated their feathered ways. Well done!
Very Funny - and VERY profane

As a life-long birder, I appreciate the perversity of North American bird life, and this little book is certainly perverse as well. I also appreciate good satire - after perusing as many bird field guides as I have, this version absolutely nails it in the tongue-in-cheek department! Be prepared - be very prepared - for four-letter words of every variety known to man, however. Do NOT let school-age kids read this unless they already have a mastery of salty vocabulary, or unless you want them to pick up such words immediately. Despite this, and since I've heard (and actually used) all those words many times in my six-plus decades of English usage, I greatly recommend this book to all birders who don't take their avocation - or themselves - too seriously.

This little book is a speedy read and utterly enjoyable. If you love watching birds and don't take that endeavor too seriously, you will laugh out loud!

I shared it with several biologists at UConn and they all wanted their own copy, if only to taunt bird biologist peers.
NOT for Children! Lots of "Fowl" Language

Usually I stop reading a book once a few "F" words are needlessly spewed on the page. This book goes way past a few "F" bombs (and other unrepeatable phrases), but I admit I still laughed way too much. If you are a birder, you'll understand. The little jerks drive me nuts (but I love them!). Adult bird watchers might find this amusing, but please, do NOT give this book to any youngster who might sit next to your grandmother/mother/pastor at dinner.
