Good Compact Water Purifer - Highly Recommended
by C. Hill (5 out of 5 stars)

We bought the "MSR SweetWater Purifier System" for packing in on long hikes or camping since the little bit of extra weight is well worth the peace of mind of knowing that we can make local water safe for drinking, cooking, and washing if the water we packed along runs out. This does not have a huge flow rate, but it does the job at a reasonable pace.

Be sure to read and follow the very helpful directions before first using the system. It has important setup, use, and maintenance tips that are not intuitive or obvious by looking at the pump.

One thing that we added to the kit was a pack of coffee filters and a rubber-band to put over the intake hose to keep additional fine particles out of the pump and to improve the internal filter's lifespan.

We are seriously considering getting a second SweetWater Purifier, and additional spare MSR SweetWater Filter Cartridge
, for emergency use in our mountain top house since we do get snowed in a lot and have lost power for days at a time. As I tell my kids having emergency equipment and not needing it is far better than not having emergency equipment and really needing it.

Highly Recommended!

Must Have!

I have used many water purifier systems in my life and the MSR Sweetwater i the best hands down. Very lightweight and does not take up much room. We just went out this last weekend and camped in the snow and ice. We were able to hatchet through the ice in the lake and drop the inlet hose into it and collect some fresh ice cold water. Now I know we didn't turn a mudhole into drinking water, but I just wanted to brag about the great time we had.

This is my 3rd Sweetwater, and the only one I will ever use. We are very experienced campers/hikers and we do not use just any junk when we go. We only use the best gear. This is a must to have for anyones arsenal when it comes to camping, hiking, climbing, trekking etc. Even if your just going out for a so called "short hike", toss this in your backpack, because you never know when something might happen and you may need to be out there longer than you thought. Water is #1 and Sweetwater will get you that.

So Far So Good
by Tim (5 out of 5 stars)

I've used three different purifiers and this one is my favorite from a water taste and ease of use standpoint. The safety valve is a nice feature--when the filter begins to clog causing water pressure to be too high when pumping, the valve allows the water to release. This serves as an indicator for filter cleaning--more importantly, if water is NOT squirting out the valve there is no need to clean the filter. Doing so wears out the filter prematurely.

The instructions included some practical tips such as 1) don't attach the translucent, outgoing tube when you use for the first time because the charcoal-colored water that comes out initially can stain it; 2) if you drop the filter, the water may come out charcoal colored so be sure to clear; 3) pump with the safety valve facing away from you or you may get wet; 4) don't overclean the filter or you'll wear out unnecessarily; and 5) the filter may take on the texture of 'lizard skin'--not to worry, this is normal (didn't know what that meant until I saw it, and yes, that would have concerned me!) Gives you confidence that the manufacturers has YOU in mind.

Great pump you can trust.

2nd purchase of this unit, after original ceramic reached its expiration date and i lost a few parts. I was still using my first unit with confidence when i decided to get my 2nd one. I love the quality of this unit, especially for the price. Pumps fast, and its always given me great water, even with questionable sources. On group hikes i usually end up letting everyone else use my pump because they prefer it to their own and it gets us moving faster. I have trusted this on multi-day Arizona hikes many times without any fail. I would ONLY replace this unit with a different model if i was able to budget $300+ for MSR's newer, faster, self cleaning model.

This iten exceeded all of my exoectations. I would highly recommend it. I plan on using it for back packing due to its ease of use, small size and light weight. I especially like that it screws into my hydration pack and other water containers so I am not limited to using the convenient bottle that comes with the kit. With all of the natural disasters that have been occurring these days, I have l peace of Mind that I will never be without a safe water supply. I also plan on using it when I travel out of the country for an added safety precaution for my drinking water. Best purchase I've made in a long time!! Shop around for the best price. I found it on another website for half the price so I returned it to Amazon and repurchased it else where.

I love this thing

I've used this system for years mostly back packing in the white mountains in NH, it's light and easy to pack. So far it's kept me from getting sick or poisoned. It can filter a decent volume of water so it doesn't take forever. It's also able to filter from very small volumes which comes in handy when you are high up dehydrated all you can find is a small puddle. I've also used larger bag systems and they require a large volume to draw from. Super simple to operate and effective. Nothing but good results and memories with this filter.

Fast, easy, reliable

Here in Colorado, there's "water, water everywhere" -- but woe to those who drink it unfiltered. With a robust beaver population statewide, even clean, "pure" water from a spring has probably originated in a beaver pond or stream higher up. This unit can fill a Nalgene bottle in a minute or two with its two-way action, and is light enough for backpacking. It's a little fragile, but so are trail electronics like a GPS or PLB. A little care goes a long way, and this looks like it will last a long time.

One of the very best filters available.

Top rated pump in consumer reports and many backpacking gear review sites. There are some good filters out there but this one is tested and one of the very best. Also, get the optional siltstopper for the MSR. It is an addon. Not just this filter, but any, are lessened in effectiveness by silt entering the filter. If you stop it from entering you won't need to clean the ceramic filter inside near as much.

My only quibble is that when I use the pancake filter on the end of the intake hose, the cartridge seems to clog up fairly quickly. My advice is to put a "Siltstopper" on the end. This extends the cartridge life incredibly, to me.

Meets all of my needs at a reasonable price
by Toddias (5 out of 5 stars)

I have tried a variety of water filtering systems over the years.

I really only use them for backpacking overall...although I could see using them in a prolonged power outage.

I found the MSR SweetWater system to meet all of my needs. I have used it on 3 different trips, of 2-4 days each, in the past few months. It works well, pumps a decent amount of water in a reasonable amount of time, and is easy to clean/store. The included Nalgene adapter worked well for some of my hydration packs and for my collapsible Nalgene "canteen".

At its price point, I do recommend it overall.
