Loud and clearby BF (5 out of 5 stars)

After learning about the existence of these human-powered, kazoo-like horns I bought three different kinds. From high to low price: the "Attwood Bellow Signal Horn", the "SeaSense Safety Blaster Horn", and the "Coghlan's Emergency Survival Horn".
All allow you to simply blow to make a loud, kazoo-like sound.
All allow you to replace the vibrating membrane with any thin sheet of plastic (such as plastic wrap).
All are made of hard plastic and should be impervious to water damage, although the Coughland is made of a cheaper, more brittle plastic, while the SeaSense is of a more robust plastic, with the Atwood in between.
In loudness, the Coughland was the softest, while the SeaSense and Atwood seemed equally very loud. It was easy with the Atwood to blow softer or harder to make the sound quieter or louder -- not so easy with the others.
In pitch, the Coughland was the lowest, the Atwood in the middle and the SeaSense was the highest. Uniquely, the SeaSense can easily be configured to produce three different pitches -- which might make a difference depending upon the context (e.g. on open water vs in a forest or in a mountain valley).
In size, the Coughland and SeaSense were about equal and could if needed fit into most pockets, the Atwood was two to three times as large.
In price, the Atwood was three times the price of the other two. On the other hand this is the only one where it should be obvious to anyone who picks it up where to blow into it.
The Coughland and SeaSense both emit sound to the left and right (near your ears). Cupping your hands behind the left & right ends shield your ears a little from the loudness. The Atwood emits sound forward and away from you, which helps a little. All of them will be loud to your ears no matter what you do.
The loudest bong in the world

Solidly made (in the USA) and as advertised: the thing takes very little breath to be LOUD, I mean, as in, my ears are ringing loud (don't try this in an enclosed area or in someone's ear). Diaphragm is apparently easily replaced with some plastic film if it gives up the ghost. Seriously, for a small boater or to frighten off critters, this thing fills the ticket. A bit large to carry on your person for emergencies as everyday wear, but easily clippable to a backpack for bear duty.
The only drawback I see is it does look a bit like a bong.
Would buy again.
Great loud horn

I have owned several of this type (slightly different design) for more than 20 years. They are reliable until the diaphragm tears or is damaged. My previous one stopped working after about 15 years.
It was hard to find a replacement. Even though external design is slightly different, works fine.
I like this design better than ones with compressed air canisters (what do you do when it is empty?) As long as I can "blow", any vessel in my vicinity can hear me!
Nice and loud!

I'm pretty impressed with how loud this thing is! Output is of course proportional to input; a little puff puts out a low hum; a hard exhale makes a very loud signal!
I'm certain THIS will get my kid out of bed on the first try! (Yeeesss, I'll be in the other room when I sound it! And the dogs will be out back...)
cheap/loud replacement for broken boat horn
by Tom (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a good/cheap replacement for the broken horn on our boat. It allows us to meet the requirements for a signaling device. It takes up space in the glovebox but never needs a refill & works every time.
Do NOT show a 5 year old how to use it. You will never get any peace after. It is very loud. More so than the original electric horn on the boat.
My go to emergency forested area whistle.

I can't tell if it's as loud as they say. The bellows exit is pointed away from my ears. Heard faintly from about 400 yards in a mildly dense forest when directed toward the other party. I consider this amazing. The tone is somewhat a giant duck call and not annoying when listeners are at least 10 yards away.
A great product! Simple and great quality!

A well built easy to use manual horn. It puts out some significant sound that can be heard from a good distance. The plastic that it is made out of it is sturdy and of very good quality. I hope while boating that I will never need to use it, but I am confident that it will work very well if I ever need it. I highly recommend!
Blow my own horn

As a replacement for an air horn that could deplete, this is great. The only drawback is when you blow it is really loud and too close to my ear. If its deafness or attracting attention when the boat goes down, I didn't hear you!
Really great and doesn't run out unless you do. I attached to my life vest.
LOUD!

Got this for noisy neighbors! Once the banging and yelling could be heard above the TV, 3 long blows in 15 seconds silenced them and it has been quiet for over a month so far. All the other neighbors are glad the noise has stopped. Definitely worth the price and can also be used for regular boating signal!
Low bellow sound, great

I use this for a foghorn for my sailboat in SF Bay and up and down the Coast. It's a low sound so it doesn't shriek like those air can horns. And you never run out of air with this thing. Like some other viewer said it doesn't take much air or effort to make a sound. Easy to find because it's bright orange and small enough not to be in the way.
