Highly recommended as an entry level or field microscopeby F. Moretzsohn (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought both this product, Carson MicroBrite 20x-40x LED Lighted Pocket Microscope for Learning, Education and Exploring (MM-24, MM-24MU) and the higher magnification sibling, Carson MicroBrite Plus 60x-120x Power LED Lighted Pocket Microscope (MM-300)
. Both are inexpensive, and overall, I'm happy with them. I liked the lower powered one better because it comes with base that has a glass slide holder. The image quality is surprisingly good for the price. It is easy to use, however, I would have preferred if the control for magnification and focus were switched, i.e., have the focus with a twisting dial at the bottom and a lever to change the magnification, like in the higher magnification model (60-100x). I also prefer the other model's light, which stays on until you click the button, and the AA battery. However, although it may sound like I like the other model better than this, I actually like the 20-40x model better because of the removable base and it being more useful to look at a wide range of objects.
I am a researcher and have access to research-grade microscopes. This inexpensive microscope does not replace a research microscope. However, it is a great entry microscope that may be useful, say, for a field trip in a college-level class, like my Invertebrate Zoology or Parasitology classes. I may order a bunch of this scopes for my classes to take to the beach or field.
A few things could be better: as mentioned above, the focus could be better if it were on a twisting dial and the battery could stay on, and with a larger battery (e.g., AA). It would also be useful if it could capture the image (but adding a camera it would increase considerably the cost); alternatively, it would be more useful if it could be attached to a cell phone camera, since cell phones are ubiquitous and take great photos. And a small detail: the scope could have a ring or loop so that it could be wore on a chain or lanyard like a jeweler's loupe (the 60-100x model has it).
As others have suggested, it would be a great gift to a child who may be interested in sciences. And being so inexpensive, it is a low risk investment. This scope is much easier to use and has better image quality that other simple microscopes that I have seen. I highly recommend it.
Buy this microscope, or a bunch of them.

My fickle 7 year old expressed interest in a microscope leading up to Christmas, but I didn't want to invest a whole lot not knowing how long she'd stick with it. I spent about an hour reading reviews of all manner of classroom style, toy style, the whole gamut of microscopes suitable for kids. I was sold on the reviews for this little thing and the price cannot be beat. Bought it along with a set of prepared slides, but those have been mostly ignored in lieu of dragging it around looking at all sorts of things in our surroundings. Since you can take it out of the base you aren't tethered to looking at what you can fit on a slide. If she someday has a more serious setup, I'm positive that our family will still be using this thing. It magnifies well enough to be blown away by tiny fossils, textiles, our own cuticles...so fun. Most used Christmas gift one month later.
So good, your friends will steal it!

this thing is great! originally, i had to buy one for an intro biology class, two years ago. didn't use it much for the class, but this thing has seen constant use since then! my friend is a rock collector maniac and he stole it from me. this little microscope is way better than it should be for the price. was expecting total junk, but it's not. we are always amazed at the mineral patterns and surface textures and pits and cool little things stuck in the rocks. we are always exclaiming "wow didn't expect that!" ... he has a small coin collection and this scope works great for that too. looked at a dusty table and that view is scary if you are a clean freak. this scope does NOT need a higher magnification, it's in the sweet spot. i've also used it to look at spider eyes (the best way to identify brown recluses). the build quality and image quality is something you would expect for a thirty dollar scope, not a ten dollar scope. we've only had to replace the button cell batteries twice in two years. fixing to buy another one so i don't have to borrow mine back all the time!
Great for backyard/hikes with the kids.

Great little microscope for kids either in the backyard or on a hike. I was thinking about getting one of those wireless microscopes, but this is microscope gives them more of a hands on mechanical feel for doing it.
Slides fit into a slot in the black base. The black base comes off which lets you use it for looking at things on the ground.
If you have a steady hand, you can take a vignetted picture with an iphone (other moble phones too?). It's pretty hard to do this. It's better if one person is holding & focusing the microscope and the other is positioning the phone. See attached examples where I did this.
Very poor eye-relief.

I bought two of these Carson microscopes. The MM24 and the MM300. Altogether, I spent about $25. It was pretty much a waste of money. The problem with these Carson microscopes is that the have extremely poor eye-relief. That means that you have to put your eye almost in contact with the eyepiece to see the object field. It's like trying to read a book through a pin hole. Overall, I was very disappointed with these microscopes. I would much rather have a fraction of the magnification and much better eye-relief. This would make the devices much better.
Wonderful tool for the money

I got one of these for myself to take a closer look at things in nature, and liked it so much I gave one to my five-year-old grandson who is absolutely obsessed with it. He's discovered that sugar looks like ice and so much else! Problem is, it takes forever to get anywhere because he's always stopping to examine things! It's a wonderful little tool for the money.
Fun for a young scientist.

Works well enough for a child who is exploring the world around them. Is it high quality, no. Does it work, yes. For the price you are not getting a professional piece of equipment. That said it does work well. My niece is a budding scientist who loves exploring nature. She " has been waiting her whole life for this". I tried it out and the view is very clear not tack sharp but better then I expected. It holds slides and has a removable base to use on large samples like rocks. The LED light is bright enough to be useful and as she pointed out can be used as a flashlight. The batteries it cam with did not last very long but a new set has lasted for a couple of months. The build quality is kind of cheap but sturdy so it can take a beating. About the only real down side is no way to interface a camera. So you can't put your cell phone up to the eyepiece and take photos. If you have budding scientist, are an elementary school teacher, or just like to see the world a little closer, you can't beat the deal.
Sturdy and great first microscope for kids

Bought this for my 5yo who is very curious and interested in science and the natural world. It's small but sturdy enough for little hands, and the base that holds slides in place comes off so you can take it outside and look at other things like tree bark and flowers. It's easy to adjust and the button on the side activates a light to light up the slide. For little kids you'll have to get it in focus for them, as some don't quite understand that yet. It comes with a few blank glass slides so you can collect specimens to look at, but I also purchased another set of glass slides with insects and pollen and other items so my daughter could start looking at things right away. This is a great first microscope for kids and I'm so glad I purchased.
Great educational gift for my little cousin!

I bought this microscope as a holiday gift for my little 8-year-old cousin. I bought this for her because I remember having a little microscope like this as a kid and being fascinated seeing leaves and bugs close-up. It's never too early to get kids interested in science, right?! I also got her these slides to go with the microscope: Learning Resources Prepared Slides Set 2 (24 Specimens)
. She had a ball playing with it and I did too - definitely tempted to get one for myself...
amazingly useful & fun!

Families in my online homeschool group rave about this microscope and since my daughter wanted one but we weren't ready to invest in a full-sized one, we took the (very low-priced) plunge. It's amazing!! In many ways, due to the portability and flexibility of being usable straight up against the bark of a growing tree or anywhere else, it's got some serious advantages! It came with slides, and worked with slides of the parts of a bumblebee that I purchased separately as well.
