Tamiya 1/10 Toyota Land Cruiser 40

I am thrilled with this exact replica of my husbands real Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 40! Although the color on the box is red, the body of the Land Cruiser inside is clear. You get to paint it any color you want. My husband will be able to paint it the exact color of his FJ 40. I highly recommend this toy for all Land Cruiser enthusiasts, rock crawlers, and recreational vehicle lovers.

What a challenge!

I wanted the challenging build and I have it. This is a kit and it is not for the impatient. I enjoyed the Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin I built and am running but this is even better. The materials, screws and all parts are excellent and high quality. This is a great company.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet but everything seems to be well built. The shocks could probably be built a little better. I could see this being a challenge to put together if someone has never done this before. There were a couple minor adjustments that I had to do to get a little more wheel travel. But for the most part it's an overall good product.

Nice kit but more for experienced builder.

Be sure to buy a spare Tamiya heavy duty servo saver along with your servo if you are planning on doing 4 wheel steering (4WS). The other hardware is included for the rear servo (mounts, ball joint pieces, rods, mounts, etc). I had to pull a heavy duty servo saver from another kit to finish. Without 4WS, the turn radius is very big, so one will probably want to do the 4WS.

Note that the transmitter, receiver, speed controller, battery, charger, paint are all sold separately and not included in this kit.

The body is clear polycarbonate.

I recommend one reads the assembly instructions several times (downloadable at tamiyausa.com), especially the drive axle mount section, and note down where the illustration shows the drive axles turned around. Also get little dishes to separate all the screws. There are MANY screws in this kit and the length illustration is not very accurate. Measure the thread length and place the screws in separate dishes before you start, and mark the dishes with the lengths. This will dramatically cut down your build time.

I am an experienced builder and usually it takes about 5hrs to build a RC car kit, but this one took me more like 12-14hours, not that there is any race to build, just stating how much more complex this kit is. Overall I enjoyed building it.

If you are looking for a realistic looking Land Cruiser crawler, I recommend getting the CC01 kit instead. I own both CR01 and CC01 Landcruisers. The CR01 is more of a real crawler while the CC01 offers more of a scale look. Both use identical polycarbonate bodies.

The body has nice detail for a Lexan body
by D. Wilson (5 out of 5 stars)

This was one of the early rock crawler kits available. It's really in category all to itself. I call it 1/3 rock crawler, 1/3 scale truck, 1/3 monster truck.

The body has nice detail for a Lexan body. It sits high on over sized tires making it able to crawl over really challenging terrain.

The kit has 2-3 times more parts than comparable kits and you build everything including the tranny & axles, shocks, etc. Many kits have pre-assembled components like the transmission and axles. Tamiya kits are fun to build because they're well engineered and have excellent instructions. If a typical RC4WD or Axial kit that takes 3-4 hours, plan 7-8 hours for this one.

With a simple modification, this kit is extremely durable. I've had 3 kids learn on it and it's taken a lot of abuse.

My only complaints are 1. the drive shaft is a weak link. It's splined plastic and any crawler motor will twist it up in no time. It's a simple upgrade to put hardened steel drive shafts in, Tamiya makes them as well as several other RC hop up companies. 2. the wheelbase doesn't match the body correctly. The rear wheels sit back a little to far. You can shorten the metal suspension links and correct it but it's not as simple as just taking a 1/4" off the links. RCC forum has a CR-01 section with instructions. Unlike the driveshaft, it's a cosmetic thing but it does bug me.3. Turn radius is weak. You can set it up for 4 wheel steer which solves the problem from a technical standpoint but if you like it to look somewhat realistic, rear wheel steer is not normal outside of monster trucks. Aluminum upgraded C hubs helped as does a super high torque servo but it still doesn't turn as sharp as other trucks I have.

I generally build kits stock and as I break things, put upgraded parts in. other than the drive shafts, the only thing that has broken is a C-hub on the front which I replaced with aluminum one. The aluminum C hubs also helped with increasing the turn radius.
