Some "Happy Little" Episodes.
by Jim and Kimberly Campbell (5 out of 5 stars)

I first discovered Bob Ross on Cable TV waaaaay back in 1993. My mom told me about this guy who painted the most amazing landscape paintings using the types of big brushes that are usually used to paint walls or the outside of a garage. Once I saw one of his episodes I was instantly hooked. I was completely blown away by how incredible his paintings were, and even more amazed that he does these in 30 minutes. I started recording his shows and for years I loved watching them over and over again. Listening to his soft spoken, pleasant voice is so relaxing, and his paintings are so majestically beautiful that you just can't look away. I was never that great in Art class in high school, but after a few years of watching "The Joy Of Painting" I got myself some oil paints, a few canvases, two inch brushes, oval brushes, fan brushes, painting knifes, and I followed his very detailed instructions and I will tell you from first hand experience...Bob Ross's teaching technique REALLY works! I created several of my own paintings and my friends and family were astonished at what I was able to paint. For the past 22 years I have never been able to find any TV channel that broadcasts "The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross" and for years I kept hoping that his shows would be put onto DVD, and I was very excited to see that Amazon has several new DVD's of Bob's painting show and I immediately added all of them to my wish list. This Seascape Series DVD has 13 episodes that I have never seen before and I now want to get back into painting again. So if you've never experienced "The Joy of Painting" with Bob Ross, and wether you are interested in learning how to paint, or you are just looking for something that is relaxing and enjoyable to watch, I really recommend getting these DVD's. You will love them! "And from all of us here, I'd like to wish you Happy Painting....And God Bless My Friend."

The Best

I bought all of these Bob Ross DVD's for my niece who has recently developed an interest in learning to paint. Bob Ross "taught" me to paint, and I think I did pretty good! I painted 43 paintings from just watching and listening to him. He had such a soft voice and obviously had so much fun painting. He would say things like, "I think a little flower lives here!" and he would paint a little flower and laugh. My most popular painting was of a lighthouse and ocean at night...I did that one several times for members of my family and friends. Anyone who wants to paint can certainly learn a lot from Bob Ross!

9 and a half hours of Bob Ross...
by Michael Valdivielso (4 out of 5 stars)

Nine one hour episodes, created as instructional painting guides, with a half-hour episode from the Joy of Painting series. Wonderfully detailed and complete, its price tag may seem a tad high. But please note educational material is always going to cost twice or more than material for entertainment. For the price I could have gotten three brand new 25 episode anime sets. Or four used ones. Or six short, semi-new, 13 episode, anime sets. Or 10 happy meals. And the price will likely only go up.

But it is a must for those of you who wish to learn how to paint or are fans of the great, late Bob Ross. Each episode is a self-contained class, in which he explains what materials are needed, how to set up your work space, tools, use of the brushes and how to set up the canvas. THEN he gets into color, light, shape, background, and so-on. He is a wonderful teacher as long as his calm voice does not put you to sleep.

A star was removed only for the price which, as I said, is pretty high. Maybe a tad too high.

Wonderful Gift from a Bob!

This is the third Bob Ross series I have purchased and it is definately my favorite! The paintings range from simple to challenging and each one teaches something new (to me, anyway). The Bob's encouraging and kind teaching manner is very helpful as is the rewind function on the DVD player. Learning with Bob is fun and very calming. Painting with Bob has become a family affair. My mom, who had never tried any artistic project, completed her first (very nice) painting. My niece and I are utterly smitten and have now completed several paintings. Other family members have also tried their hand and produced several very nice paintings.

One of the nicest things about learning Bob Ross's technique through his videos is his attitude that all of us are able to paint. My family proves it, none of us had ever painted and now we all have paintings we are proud of hanging on our walls and several relatives have been gifted with art!

A beginner might start with Bob's "Getting Started" or the three hour instructional DVD which demonstrates common mistakes and their solutions in the last hour. Very helpful to those like me who have no clue!

If you are a beginner, like me, this is an excellent place to begin your affair with art!! Once you have learned some techniques you can go on to create whatever you want and if you just want to paint with Bob he'll keep you busy for a long time. Either way, I'm very grateful he decided to share his wet on wet painting technique with the world!! Thanks, Bob!

Magic before your eyes
by Scott Hedegard,Top Contributor: Rock Music (5 out of 5 stars)
July 30, 2015

I'm a musician currently exploring the world of computer program synthesizers from a wonderful app called "GarageBand". While I am (was) primarily a guitar player, after downloading this app I quickly discovered a new world of colors and sound that guitar just couldn't quite grasp. Because I did take some beginner's piano at a young age, I am not totally keyboard illiterate although I don't read music, rather play by ear and compose original stuff. Some who listen to my stuff seem to really dig it, as practice will enhance, with psychedelia, scifi music, moody aural works that are free form and would be good as background music in some films.
That said, at least in the improvisation department, I can somewhat identify with Bob Ross, even though I couldn't draw flies. Some creative types can do music and visual art but not all of us. So why then, would I even watch, much less recommend a painting DVD set when I have no intention of taking up the hobby? Good question. Here's the answer.
Bob Ross was legendary because not only was he able to create astounding natural paintings, he did it with the exception sometimes of applying backdrop blacks or white before beginning the actual painting in 30 minutes. Like all real magic, he made it look simple, and explained what he was doing in simple terms, too.
What appeals to me is his calm voice, obvious love of nature and a personality of kindness not seen much any more. We lost a good friend when he succumbed to cancer. It is inspiring and jaw dropping to watch a blob of yellow or some shade of red or green, make a few broad strokes, and suddenly watch what looks like a pell mell paint ball scramble gel into a work of beauty. It's very relaxing to watch these seascapes come to life, and, see Ross blend colors and light/dark dynamics that convince me that real magic, not slight of hand, does indeed exist on some metaphysical plane.
You don't have to be an artist of any type to enjoy this DVD. It's soothing, beautiful and a wonderful catharsis from the normal TV bombarding we have to endure. Fortunately, there is a protege, Kevin Hill, who also has a show on PBS in some markets. Hill too has that remarkable capability, and it's nice to see the talent be passed on. In an ugly world, Ross was quick to demonstrate the good and the beautiful, something we as a society have stupidly chosen to overlook.

He's The Man!
by PianoMan (4 out of 5 stars)

I would have given this 5 stars (any and everything Bob Ross deserves 5 stars) however, I'm not crazy about sellers listing the product as "Brand New" when there are finger prints on the discs and the "Factory sealed" clearly looks like a child melted a plastic bag over it.
Other than the nonsense listed above, what's not to love? One on one with Ross... doesn't get much better.

The Magic of Bob Ross
by Eric Johnson (5 out of 5 stars)

Bob Ross is a wizard who makes colors, lines, and brush strokes into a world on canvas. I greatly enjoy watching him mix a blob of Cobalt Blue with a small amount of Burnt Umber, and a bit of Cadmium Yellow to create a lake that pushes out in front of the woods and reflects the trees and sky. With each movement of Ross's brush, objects manifest themselves like ectoplasmic visions at a séance. I sit stunned as Ross's magic creates a unique world on a blank canvas.
These DVDs are highly recommended both for those who want to learn to paint and for those, like me, who hope to better appreciate how paintings achieve their effects.

So relaxing to watch, and it really brings back memories
by Adam Wood (4 out of 5 stars)

I grew up with this show, and I love watching it. I'm not a painter at all, but I love to watch him do it. A lot of times, I'll just listen to Bob talking in the background while I do something else. He's just so soothing to listen to.

The mountain scenes were always my favorite, so this collection is great for me. I'd love to get the entire series, but it costs over $1000. So, ~$30 was well worth some nostalgia for me.

The video quality is good. It's not high-def like blu-ray, but it's still pleasing to watch. Audio is also good - not great, but good. The baseline volume fluctuates from episode to episode sometimes, so I find myself turning the volume up and then back down. That's a minor nit, though. I run audio through my receiver, and I turn on surround sound processing so that his voice plays through my center channel instead of the front two speakers - that just sounds more natural to me (probably because I grew up with his voice playing through a single speaker on a TV).

Some notes:
(*) The audio is stereo and not 5.1 as the cover photo states.
(*) The cover photo says "Full Screen," but that stands for the "old" full screen ratio of 4:3. If you have a widescreen TV, your TV and/or disc player can almost surely stretch the image to fill the whole screen if you prefer that, but I like to keep it at 4:3 to show the original aspect.

A bit pricey in general, IMO, but still worth it. Highly recommended, especially if you're already a fan. You can also check if your local PBS station still shows The Joy of Painting (mine still does from time to time).
