Had about a year now and the aluminum cover has melted off. I have contacted Looflighter via website to ask for replacement cover and no reply. This is a safety issue as the element is exposed without protection.

I thought I reviewed this already. This thing is great. I find myself having trouble with the starter cubes, so opted for the Looftlighter. you have to have a cord to power it, but my BGE is on the patio anyway so its a win win. Take a little getting used to, if you have any damp lump (yep), it may take longer, but with a fresh dry bag it starts a good glow on the lump within about 30 seconds. Sometimes it takes longer if the lump as been used again (Im in S Tx where humidity is 100% all the time). I hold the unit right on the charcoal until it starts to glow, then back off just a bit and continue to let it blow for a bit to get a flame going.

Great little fire starter.

If you have a charcoal grill this is extremely worth it. I hate to use any charcoal that had lighter fluid already impregnated in it. I like to use lump charcoal, wood charcoal or organic charcoal. The lighter gets the charcoal going very quickly. Usually I had to put lots of lighter fluid on the charcoal to get it going and then saturate it again. This way I hold it to the charcoal for a few minutes in one spot and that charcoal is ready to go. I then get another section of charcoal going the same way. After about 5 minutes the grill is ready and hot.

Got a new Primo Oval XL kamado grill this week. Its been years since I cooked on charcoal as I have a built in gas DCS gas grill, a Yoder pellet grill, and an electric smoker, I never have used natural lump charcoal before. So decided to give this electric lighter a try as an enviro-friendly and easy way of starting my charcoal. I saw a number of these units online, all very similar, decided to get the Looflighter mainly as it seems to be the "original". It arrived today and I could not wait to try it, even though I didn't have anything to BBQ. Wow, results were outstanding for me. I spent maybe 3-4 minutes in total lightning several points around my pile of coals, usually took 10-15 seconds till the area sparked and then backed off and continued to blow area for another 30-45 seconds until steady flame appeared, then moved to next spot. I got best results by aiming the nozzle deep in towards center of the charcoal pile which got the flames going internal to the pile rather than just on the edges. In less than 15 minutes I had a powerfully hot bed of coals going. One thing I did do was close the grill lid and have the bottom and top vents fully open which created a good chimney effect and helped get things going well in the coal bed But at 15 minutes my grill was registering over 400 degrees F. Bottom line -- I am very happy to report that this gizmo WORKS. Glad I bought it!!!

This thing is badass! It lights my Green egg faster than anything else. You have to be smart about using this beast. Place some paper or other flammable material under your charcoal. With the egg, I placed my lump charcoal towards the back. With paper under it, I started the lighter, placing the end on the paperand when sparks occured(about 2 minutes later) I pulled the lighter back and used the fan to ignite the charcoal and create heat...I kept a bit of distance from the lighter and the heat of the lit charcoal..this thing is serious about starting a fire! My new favorite toy.. I have had this now for over a year and still works flawlessly! For our fireplace, I place paper and coardboard with kindling on top in the box. I either use a match, or the loft lighter to catch the paper on fire. The hot air from the lighter blows the fire and actually catches the kindling on fire. As the fire is going, I back the looftlighter away and keep the hot air on it until it have good ignition and fire. If the fire is skunking, then I use the looftlighter to get it back going...works every single time. If this thing broke tomorrow, I would buy another in a flash!

I decided to give this product a try after 2 electric BGE charcoal starters broke. I use my BGE 3-5x a week for dinners and pool party BBQs. Lighting lump charcoal can be a pain because you DO NOT EVER USE lighter fluid in a BGE. After 2 months of usage, meticulously following the instructions and watching a few YouTube videos, I am less than thrilled. First you have to wheel your BGE close to a preferred power outlet because the cord is not that long, and then the frustration begins as you realize that this device requires you to hold down the on button for what will take somewhere between 7-10 mins to get a proper fire going inside your EGG. The real issue that comes into play while using this device is the sparks that will begin flying off your lump charcoal when it begins to reach burning temp. You will not want to be wearing anything you won't mind getting holes burnt in, and eyewear is recommended. This makes for a very annoying experience when "firing up" your grill. I've tried using all kinds of quick charcoal igniters to accelerate the ignition... they help, but you will be standing there dodging sparks like you're in The Matrix whilst trying to get a flame in your firebox as all your friends laugh at you. Honestly an actual flame torch is the best way to go. Yes that requires propane and common sense, but it is much faster and reliable. I've had several meals delayed for significant time because of the time it takes with this "hairdryer." I would not recommend this product to anybody, I only kept the one I purchased because the heat shield is now burnt at the tip and I have it handy as a backup in case I run out of propane. If you're looking for a quick way to light your charcoal, this isn't it.

I regret this purchase. It did not even make it two years. I followed the directions to the letter, but as you can see in the attached photos, the tip has melted. I was using mine in a Big Green Egg and would very carefully touch it to the unlit coals, as instructed, and then pull it away when sparks begin to fly. Apart from not lasting two years, it throws out way too much smoke, soot, and sparks as it lights your wood and coals.
