Took it to the beach and the sand either sat ...

Took it to the beach and the sand either sat on the top of the mat or between both sides of the mesh. It wasn't itchy and didn't get hot so that was a plus but I definitely wouldn't have spent $50+ on a beach mat that doesn't work.

Great Sand Mat
by Brian Shurtliff (5 out of 5 stars)
July 17, 2013

Hi, This sand mat is great. I live in the desert and go out sand dunning a lot. I wasn't so sure it was going to work but I figured anything is better then a regular tarp, especially when my kids keep tossing sand everywhere.

The sand immediately gets sifted down and makes a sand free environment. I can't comment on how it works when the sand is wet from direct experience but I could see it being an issue. Honestly, if you are in a hot environment like where I am, its the least of your worries. Water is scarce and hard to come by.

I think this is worth getting.

Incredible Product

Heavy duty mat with metal D rings to stake down if needed. We use it up at Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan, and there is nothing but acres of sand. It is an amazing product! Sand filters through as stated, without coming back up through it. The kids can run on and off of it, and the sand sinks right through. Great for little ones when eating at the beach. Since the sand sinks as soon as it's on top of the mat, the food may fall, but won't get sandy. Clumped up wet sand will land on the mat and stay until brushed through. Material consistency is similar to that of the mesh on the back of a ball cap, but double layered. We bought the Large, which is 10 x 10 in size. I would recommend this product to anyone wanting a way to enjoy the beach without the hassle of sand on your blanket. By far exceeded my expectations... I can't say enough good things about it.

Big, beach mat, keeps sand off.

This beach blanket or mat is huge, 3 adults can lay on in comfortably. 4 adults can fit also, just a little closer. Works great, the sand filters through and does not stay on top. We have used it for 2 years now. It is very durable and packs easily.

worth the price

Used this rug outside our tent for a 3 night trip. Between me, my husband and our 3 large dusty dogs going in and out of the tent, the dirt inside our tent was reduced from our previous trips. I would recommend this rug for an outdoor event that takes place on dirt.

Trim deterioirated from the sun within months
by Blake (2 out of 5 stars)
April 11, 2017

The mat itself does a good job of keeping the area dirt and sand free. However the trim on mine started to disintegrate from the sun within a month - the rings would fall and the entire lining just withered away. The material used is not made for the outdoors. Now I have a tattered mat with no stake down points. Very disappointed.

My go to mat now for all my picnics and beach adventures
by Wafin (5 out of 5 stars)

This mat is fantastic. It allows small dirt particles and sand to fall through the mat. This way all you have to do is brush off any larger debris and you have a clean mat. Twigs, grass clippings, etc. just brush off of it. It is made of stiff material. I'd say plastic but it seems to be really tough. It's been jumped on, run on, tossed around and it still looks like new.

If you do put another blanket on top of it, the blanket will slide pretty easily.

I just like how clean it is and how easy to keep it clean. I never liked having footprints of sand on my beach towel after the kids come up from the ocean but now, it's a simple brush of the hand the sand is gone.

I got the 6x6 foot orange tarp which looks like an orange creamsicle since the top part is the bright orange and the bottom is a light orange.

Oh the carrying bag is great as well. Made of the same mesh like material it can easily hold the mat plus another blanket for warmth and a few other items.

Very, very happy with this product and highly recommend it to any parents who like to have a clean area to relax on while at the beach.

We use this as an awning mat with our travel trailer. Small stuff like sand just goes through and leaves the mat pristine. The mat itself is beautifully made, very sturdy, and the colors are gorgeous. However, they are not suitable for long-term use as an RV mat - the tie-down loops and edging started to deteriorate in the sun within a month, and the tie-down rings pulled out with a weak finger pull. Probably needs grommets in the mat material instead, since the material itself seems to hold together. Have not yet tried to make that modification.

Using it every week in Hawaii, great replacement for towel
by Rob (5 out of 5 stars)
February 23, 2014

I live in Hawaii and it now permanently lives in my car and we use it 1-2 times per week to go to the beach (Ala Moana usually). Being made of plastic, it's very convenient. If I left a towel in the car and used it a few times a week for months, the towel would retain dirt and get mildewy quickly.

You have to be realistic about performance. The largest sand grains aren't going to go through, but it ends up being maybe 1-2% of the sand that is that large (yes squinted and tried to count), and that doesn't bug me. What does bug me without the mat is getting stuck with tons of the small sand, as well as the sandy powder. Until I got this mat I never differentiated between big sand, small sand, and powder, and now I really notice how much of the annoying sand (small & powder) it removes.

That said there are some things to know. Plastic is of course not soft, and although I'm not uncomfortable sitting on it, it's not comfortable either. I got used to it quickly, but the first time I noticed it was different. Since we bring towels to dry off anyways, we often stretch it out over the mat. It's great because you're in no danger of getting sandy at the edges of your towel. I've gotten used to it, and just sit on the mat most times though. Kids won't mind.

The carrying bag that it comes with is super useful, and has some room to spare for a few small beach things and is very light over my shoulder, even with other bags of beach gear. I'm very glad it comes with the bag. I got the 6x6 size for two (or two and a kid), and it's perfect. We sometimes use it on moist ground too, like grassy hiking areas, or grass at a park, how we use it for a picnic is we spread another blanket or towel on top. If I lost the mat, I'd definitely buy a replacement immediately.

UPDATE FEB 2016: years later and we still use it weekly or more often, and it still lives in my car. In the several years I've owned it, one time I really abused it with a muddy picnic and storing it wet-- smelled a bit after that (first time it ever smelled), so I took it out of my car, hosed it off, and after drying in the sun it was good as brand-new. Size is still perfect with 2 parents + toddler/K. If you use it on a rainy day at the beach of course sand will stick when you pack up.

Not user friendly
by S. Weaver (2 out of 5 stars)
May 11, 2012

Ordered the 10x10 blue mat. It is not exactly what I expected. It does not come with a carrying handle or bag as in the picture (guess I should have read the description closer). It is large, made of stiff material so does not fold up nicely and is fairly heavy so I am not sure how I am going to transport it back and forth from the beach. Also, you would definitely need to put a towel over it- it is NOT soft or comfortable at all- "very scratchy" according to my kids. This one might be going back. Haven't taken it out so I can't give a review on the technology.
