All this is, is a Harbor freight arbor press.. they are $60.00 in the store.. I guess i could put a fancy sticker on it and call it a sledgehammer, but I dont know if I could in good faith charge over a grand for it.. maybe $500.00 if i took the time to put the sticker on straight...

Any arbor press will do the same thing. They all apply many tons of force on whatever is under the quill. This is an insanely obvious scam aimed at the same market that bought Y2K "protection" at obscenely prices.

I have no problem with selling products at whatever the market will accept but this is so over the top that it is sickening. Counting on the ignorance of people and playing on their fears is disgusting. It is right up there with telling someone with income less than 40 grand a year that they can afford a home priced at a million while knowing that its real value is 400 grand.

This is literally the press found here: http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G4018-Arbor-Press-Ton/dp/B00FSD5NCE/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1393104120&sr=1-1&keywords=Grizzly+G4018+Arbor+Press%2C+1+Ton&tag=613240924-20
...except for ten times the price. An unscrupulous ripoff targeted at people who don't know any better and think that hard drive destruction equipment should cost in the thousands.

This product is a rip-off

I own one of these. I bought it from Harbor Freight for $90 (including shipping to Alaska). It's an excellent arbor press, but by no means is it worth more than $1000. This price is a rip-off, you're paying $900 for a sticker and a steel point that sips into the end of the press arm (approximate value $50).

tl;dr

Good tool, go buy it from Harbor Freight to save $850.

As already pointed out by other reviews, this item is the same as a Grizzly G4018 Arbor Press; except with a faceplate and an attachment.

Link to the exact same press, direct from Grizzly for only $110.00: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FSD5NCE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00FSD5NCE&linkCode=as2&tag=natdee-20

It's an Arbor press, for this price your could buy one at Harbor freight, plus a plasma cutter, welding torches, and several sledgehammers, and still have a couple hundred bucks left over.

Clarification on differences between SEM Model 0100 and Grizzly Arbor Press 4018
by Ben (5 out of 5 stars)
March 29, 2014

Good Day,

I do not own a SEM Model 0100 "Sledgehammer" Manual Hard Drive Crusher so I have given it a 5 of 5 so as to not besmirch the product.

I did do a lot of research on this product and there is a Q/A above that states this SEM Model 0100 is really just a rebranded arbor press from a different company.

I purchased a 3 ton Grizzly arbor press based on the above information. This unit is much cheaper then the SEM Model 0100 which I believe to be a 1 ton. I got the 3 ton because I thought I would want more force which would make it easier to crush a hard drive. This is probably overkill.

The important things here is that the

Grizzly G4018 Arbor Press, 1 Ton

Grizzly G4019 Arbor Press, 2 Ton

Grizzly G4020 Arbor Press, 3 Ton

all do not come with a SEM HDC850ANVIL Anvil bit. In fact not only do they not come with an Anvil bit used to pierce the hard drives the "RACK" part# P4020010 is flat at both ends. There is no predrilled hole for the Anvil bit to screw into.

If you search for this SEM HDC850ANVIL Anvil bit online there are some pictures that show it missing its back screw. Not sure why so do not be fooled.

I had to go get the "rack" countersink-ed with a thread so that the SEM HDC850ANVIL Anvil bit could screw in. I did this at a local machine shop and it cost me ~$40.

I have not tried to crush a hard drive yet but when I do I will return with my experiences and update. There are youtube videos showing the SEM Model 0100 "Sledgehammer" in action and it does look like hard drives get crushed.

There is a new version of the Arbor press that does come with three bits. They can be seen on the parts list. This is the T series and not the old G series. An example would be T26414 2 Ton Arbor Press. I wonder if some headache could have been spared purchasing this unit that comes with three bits.

The three bits are

DIE-ROUND NOSE

DIE-SQUARE HEAD

DIE-CONE POINT (This being the closest to the SEM Anvil bit but not as menacing)

I hope this is helpful for others looking for a solution and attempting to save some money.

Update as of 2014.04.17:
Crushing hard drives with my device as outlined above:

We have gone through attempting to crush hard drives. It is not easy. Crushing hard drives takes all the strength I have combined with attempting to use my weight. This causes the 138 lb Grizzly Arbor press to shift and move. This means that the unit needs a stand or has to be bolted down. We have tried to place the press on the ground. Where this is safer it still moves. The anvil bit goes in the center where the drive spindle is. The leaver is wound to apply tension on the on the hard drive. With enough force the spindle will pop out the back. Again this is not easy. There are at lest two youtube videos that show the crushing in action. It looks easy but it is not. Or maybe I am just a weakling.

Don't be the jack ass that spends a grand on some crap you can get for 1/10th the price at Harbor Freight. If you do, I'll be happy to laugh in your face.
