Oh, no, that silhouetted figure won't survive that!

The Fred & Friends THE END Dramatic Bookend won't do at all if you're looking to, say, hold up your entire volume set of Encyclopædia Britannica or maybe your hardcover collection of Robert Jordan's endless Wheel of Time saga. It's a stand-alone bookend, so you only ever get one per order. And, no, you mustn't be too liberal in propping up heavy books against it. It's a bookend that works best as an ornamental piece. Its practical functionality isn't as satisfying. But it's a can't-miss conversational ice breaker because there'll always be someone in the crowd what's gone agog over the nifty illusion of the tilted books threatening to collapse and crush the poor silhouetted figure. The secret, of course, is the hidden metal edge that braces the first book. The end result is pleasingly dramatic.

A pointless, defunct ripoff; good idea, poorly executed
by OneRaisedEyebrow (1 out of 5 stars)

This thing is too light, only holds up 3 or so books. Anything more than that and it starts to slide. Also, the books need to have spines at least six inches long, otherwise the won't lean properly, and actually act like a counterweight, pushing the bookend out. Also-also: be warned; it says it in the description, but there is only one per package. So it's basically a stamped-steel cutout that costs about $20, and doesn't hold books up. Worthless.

This is a fun bookend.

It's a nice bookend that gets a second look from coworkers. One thing to note is that it's designed so have the cover of the first book wrap around the stand. This is the only way you'll get books to not slide off the bookend. Even then, depending on the book and table surface you might have trouble stacking books on top of the first one. It's best to start with a large book and stack progressively smaller books on top of it.

Good product, glad I read the cautions from other reviewers
by Patrick Miner (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a fun product that I use in my classroom to draw student attention to my Top Picks of the Week. My students are constantly amazed by it and can't get over the design. It's dramatic and eye-catching; other teachers have expressed surprise and delight when they see it and commend it for making something as mundane as a classroom library "catchy" without being flashy and gaudy.

I'm glad I read the cautions: this functions perfectly well as a book end, just as long as there is not too much weight on the actual "vertical(?)" edge. Standard books work great; large books such as a Shakespeare conpendium or a thick anthology will bend this, ruining the effect, and possibly break it entirely.

Overall, I enjoy this product for its dramatic flair and the reaction it creates; as for function it is just that: functionable.

Cute and Useful
by Dave (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a really cute book holder, but it cannot hold more than a couple books before it may start getting pushed off most desk surfaces. I'd suggest some additional texture or even tape on the bottom to hold it in place with larger or more books. Overall it doesn't take up much space, it's enjoyed by most who have seen it, and would make a great gift for the readers in your life.

Clever, but mostly decorative
by TSO (4 out of 5 stars)

It will actually hold up a row of books, but make sure the ones it's actually propping up are light. Buy for visual interest -- not heavy duty bookending.

Fairly good, some minor issues
by JH (4 out of 5 stars)

This thing does slide a bit and is best used with a few small books. I purchased very standard bookends to keep the larger books nearby in place, then used this at the end of the line for a more decorative look.

Great for decoration, it is SMALL
by HP (4 out of 5 stars)
November 30, 2013

It looks exactly as pictured, I mean EXACTLY. Which means it quite small and can only hold a few books. Mine is holding four books without a problem. Note that this is meant to be more of a "novelty/decoration" than a functional bookend that will hold lots of books. So if you are looking for something to showcase a few books in a cool way, then this is perfect. Otherwise you will be disappointed. I love Fred & Friend products and knew exactly what to expect, so it is great for me. Still, I cannot give it 5 stars since I wished it would be larger or designed to support a few more books (maybe have to sides so that books could be leaning on both ends?)...

Surprisingly robust

I'm really pleased with the quality of this bookend. It holds a surprising amount of mass as well. I think it's hilarious and I'll probably buy more.

Great look, but not so kind to hardcover spines
by K. Trujillo (4 out of 5 stars)
February 27, 2018

I love the look of this bookend, but it does distort the shape of the first book it's holding up. Maybe I should have used a paperback book as the first book, but I used a rather light hardcover and the spine is twisted a tiny bit. Other than that, this is definitely a noticeable conversation starter!
