Excellent purchase!by Christine Murphy (5 out of 5 stars)

I've had my eye on this for a while now. I have a Camerons stovetop smoker, but that is kind of limited; you want to smoke something that is not flat, such as a whole chicken, you have to mess with tenting it with foil, and you have to get the foil on tight enough so that too much smoke does not escape. Also, Camerons does not recommend using their stovetop smoker on a glass top stove. So when we bought a house that came with one, I had to buy an electric coil burner hotplate in order to use that smoker. But this one not only has the domed lid, but it can indeed be used on any cooktop. I also like that it comes with a thermometer so you can monitor the internal temperature of the smoker. When I saw that Amazon was offering it at a much lower price than I had seen elsewhere, I went for it.
The smoker comes with two sample packs of wood chips, apple and oak, so you can use this right out of the box. The wood chips are made by Camerons and are good for any stovetop smoker. Since I already have a Camerons smoker, I also have a collection of different flavors of wood chips for it. You can buy a variety pack right here on Amazon: Wood Smoking Chips Variety Gift Set - Set of 8 Pints (Oak, Apple, Cherry, Pecan, Maple, Bourbon, Hickory, Mesquite)
. A little goes a long way. The smoker also comes with an instruction/recipe booklet and a short instructional DVD.
The guy on the DVD made a "beer can" chicken, but without the beer can. You just pour the beer into the drip pan. You can season it with any spice rub you like, even just salt & pepper as the guy in the video did. I used Bicentennial Rub By Penzeys Spices 8.2 oz 1.5 cup bag
. The chicken was about 4.5 pounds and it took about two hours to cook, just as the guy said it would. I used apple wood chips, but you can certainly use whatever kind you like. The chicken turned out very well, nice and tender, and not at all dried out.
I also smoked some homemade andouille sausage in this. The recipe is from Bruce Aidells's Complete Sausage Book : Recipes from America's Premium Sausage Maker
. The book only gives smoking instructions for outdoor smokers, and he says not to smoke indoors, but I think this book was written before stovetops smokers were a thing. But you can easily do this on this smoker - I used pecan wood chips, put some water into the drop pan, and smoked at around 200 degrees F for a total of 90 minutes, turning the sausages every 30 minutes. Most of the recipes in books for the home sausage maker make about five pounds, and that much will not fit in this smoker at once, unless you get a rack like this one: Update International (STR1050) 10-1/2" Chrome-Plated Steamer Rack
. Or you can smoke it in two batches. I did not have the rack when I made these sausages, but I just ordered one so I will have it for the next time.
My only mistake was not heeding the suggestion that you line the drip pan with aluminum foil. I didn't have any trouble when I did the "beer can" chicken, probably because I poured enough beer into the drip pan so that any fat dripping off the chicken did not burn. But for the sausage, the water I did put in the drip pan evaporated out, and the fat from the sausage dripped and got stuck in the drip pan. When I went to scrub it out, it took some of the nonstick coating off with it. The pan is still usable, but scrubbing was a pain, so you can bet that I will lining it with foil for all future uses. Fortunately, the nonstick coating on the main grill pan stays on.
But I did heed the instructions to use the exhaust fan over the stove. This does release some smoke, but not a lot. With the fan on, it did not fill my kitchen with smoke, and opening a window was not necessary. It also did not set off any smoke alarms. But if you have sensitive smoke alarms, you may want to open a window.
All in all, I am glad I bought this, and if you buy it, I hope you enjoy it, too!
Smoked foods with very few wood chips needed.

I like smoked things but I don't want to use a ton of wood chips and a large outdoor smoker. I decided to try this. So far, all I have used it for is a whole chicken. I spatchcocked it, marinated it in apple juice, water and brown sugar then put on a rub. I didn't want to take the chance on my dad's ceramic cooktop (I think it would have been fine, but it would be expensive to guess wrong on someone else's stove) so I used my induction burner. I followed the instructions, 2ish tablespoons of wood chips, drip pan lined with foil placed on top of them, chicken on the drip tray, cover placed with thermometer not touching the meat. I didn't know what temperature to put it on so I started it on the button that said 464 degrees F. The chips started smoking right away, at which point the vent is closed. There was still a bunch of smoke coming from under the edge of the lid though, so I pinched some foil around the leaky spot. The smoker never got over 110 degrees. So I tried turning the burner to 1000 watts. After a minute or so I got an overheating error. I put it back to the 464 button. It took a long time to figure it out, but eventually I discovered if I put it on the soup button at 800 watts it would raise the temperature, then let the burner go back to 400 watts for awhile and repeat until it got to the correct temperature in the smoker. Then leave it at 400 watts. I think if I start with that method the next time it will get to temperature much faster. Once it reached around 200 in the smoker I left the chicken in for another hour and 15 minutes then checked the meat temperature. It was well over 165 but still juicy. The chicken was very tasty, just like I expected a smoked chicken to be. I am quite happy with this smoker. It did make the house smell like smoke chips, but I'm okay with that. I kept the exhaust fan on high the whole time, and as soon as the smoker was removed from the heat the smell diminished greatly. I think it will be completely gone in a day or two. I think one complaint would be there should be a tab or something on the drip tray so you can pull it out with the meat still on it if you need to. I had to stick something through one of the holes and try to pry it up when I needed to check something during the process. When the whole smoker is hot and there is a 5 pound chicken on the plate that isn't easy.
Edit: I smoked a salmon on the ceramic cooktop. No problems. Good salmon.

1 - gives the food a BBQ SMOKED flavor but doesn't truly bbq or smoke it cooked.. (it just flavors the food like it was BBQ SMOKED)
2 - cooks very fast well for me it does and i never go over 210 degrees.
3 - surprisingly it doesn't smoke up your house .. you smell smokey BBQ but its not visually smoking up the kitchen. (i leave a window open anyway..)
4 - there is plenty of height to add a steamer rack for more cooking space with low profile foods like chicken legs, thighs, wings, beef. ribs, vegetables and such ..
thanks for reading my review
Love This Little Smoker !

So far I have only used this once to smoke baby back ribs, they did come out very good , I used a little liquid smoke to moisten them, used a BBQ rub on them and marinated them overnight.
It did take longer than I thought it would to get the temp to 190° so next time I will start earlier. I guess because I had the burner turned up high trying to get the temp raised it did discolor my electric stove top around the burner , I did get it cleaned by using a SOS pad but it have me worried that it wouldn't come off.
I used probably the 2 tablespoons of the wood chips but I might use a little more next time because I like a real smoky flavor.
All in all I really like this indoor smoker, just need more practice. I did use the exhaust fan , but I really didn't notice andy smoke , the house sure smelled good the rest of the day.
I had been looking at an out door smoker but really didn't want a big one because I didn't know how often I would use it, so this fit the bill.
How to clean without damaging

I really love this little smoker. It made the food very tasty. My boyfriend also bought a couple bottles of 2 liters Coca Cola after we smoked our food. You have to immediately have to pour one of the liters of Coca Cola after and leave it in the smoker overnight so it can do it's magic cleaning. You may just have to use the second bottle of Coca Cola to get the desired results that you are looking for.
What may also work for cleaning the smoker, is a few packets of unsweetened Kool-Aid and water. You can clean this smoker without worrying about damaging the bottom.
Marvellous Idea! Useful Gadget! Poor Finish!

I bought the Nordic Ware 36550 Indoor/Outdoor Kettle Smoker when it was still too cold to use my outdoor smoker. I've used it on and off for 4 months now. And, here's my experience with it:
ON THE POSITIVE SIDE:
-This is a marvelous idea! It is a useful gadget, well designed, and easy to set up and use.
-Lid sits on base nice and tight with very little smoke loss.
-Paint finish is holding up quite well after several months.
-The unit works better on some meats/recipes than others. The smoker works particularly well with salmon steaks and other fish, like whole tilapia.
-Clean up is relatively easy...if you line the drip pan with aluminum foil.
NOW THE NEGATIVES:
-Quality control issues: Even though the smoker looks great, the finishing touches on it were a major concern. Straight out of the box, before I could use it, I had to get a file and some emery cloth, put on some work gloves for protection and file smooth all the razor sharp edges in the whole smoker! I mean everything! From the base where the lid seats to the lid edges to the smoking tray edges to the drip pan edges! I don't know if all of them are like that but, if they are...BEWARE! If you don't file those edges down, they'll slice your fingers to the bone!
-If you expect this smoker to brown your meats like it shows in the video or the pictures...IT WON'T! Especially not at the recommended temperatures of 190-210 degrees! I've even tried much higher temps than those recommended. It still didn't brown the meats! Not even the dry recipes! The only browning you'll see on your meats is from the sauce you put on it or...if you brown it in a frying pan or broiler! On that count, the video and pics are a bit misleading.
CONCLUSION:
-The Nordic Ware smoker looks pretty and, it will get you by until the weather warms up enough so you can fire up your real smoker outside.
-The smoker will infuse your meats with pleasant smoke flavors (especially fish). But, if you expect any browning or bark on the meats...look elsewhere! it won't happen with this gadget!
-Do I recommend it? Yes. It'll get you by. The unit is easy to set up and use, and very convenient indoors on those cold or rainy days when you can't do this outside. The recipes do taste great, infused with nice, smokey flavor...if you don't mind that they don't brown.
Had low expectations, but was impressed with the results.

I just received this today. I have to admit I had some buyers remorse before the item even arrived and considered cancelling the order. I'm glad I didn't. I just made some hickory smoked chicken breasts (on bone, skin on) and they came out with a great smokey flavor. I live in a small 600 sq/ft apartment and was worried about smoke alarms going off, but honestly things didn't get too smokey in the kitchen (keeping a window open helps). Getting the temperature to hold just right is a bit tricky, but the same can be said with a real smoker. Now, you're not going to get a smoke ring or super crisp skin with this, so I took others recommendation and threw the chicken in the broiler for a few minutes after cooking to get that crisp skin. Overall I'm impressed and can see myself smoking a lot of foods in the near future, even in my small apartment.
Reall cool small compact smoker! Great for beginners and small experiments

This thing is so cool! We tested it out with plain chicken breast, no salt, no seasoning, nothing. Appx 35 minutes at close to or below 200 deg F. And the exterior of the meat took on a beautiful brown color. It tasted great as well, on its own like that without added flavor. (But of course salt would have made it better lol).
This is a great small compact smoker, and a good beginners experiment before going all in to buying the larger black cabinet looking ones.
Perfect for smoking year-round

Performed as promised. The foods we have prepared with the Nordic Ware Kettle Smoker were every bit as good as if they had been made in a more traditional outdoor smoker.
The only downside is the available space. When smoking enough meat for a family meal, things like wings meal resorting to a larger traditional covered grille/smoker. But we knew that when we bought the Nordic Ware smoker.
The Nordic Ware Kettle Smoker makes it possible to enjoy freshly made smoked meats year-round, regardless of the weather. It's a great product.
Simple Little Stovetop Smoker

Nothing beats a home-cured and home-smoked cottage ham in the dead of winter, and one of these (2-4 lbs) will fit nicely in this kettle for the smoking process. I love simplicity, and you can't get much simpler than this Kettle Smoker. It does a very good job of lightly smoking your food as well as slow cooking it in the 180-220 deg range. About 1-1/4 hour at 220 does one of my cottage hams perfectly. I suspect it would work well on chicken also. Forget it if you want a heavily smoked meat, like brisket or pastrami - you'll need a real outdoor smoker and some cord wood to do justice to that. This kettle imparts a nice faint smoky smell to the kitchen for awhile, but not enough to even be visible and it is gone within a few hours. I use it on a gas range with a residential hood venting to the outside, with fan on low, and never open the lid vents.
It is a heavy kettle, and is large compared to normal cookware, so I keep mine on a shelf in the basement. The bottom pan gets dirty with the blackened wood shavings, but this does not affect the operation. I just soak it in water after use, and scrub out any spills or drippings. The black caused by the wood chips does not matter.
