If you can pour a beer, you can create a perfect black and tan layered drink. It's as easy as it looks!

Choosing the Type of Beers: It is very important to know that not all beer combinations will layer well. Obviously, many beers will have almost the same density. Often they will mix even when pouring very gently. Experimentation with many different beers is necessary. Here are some rules of thumb to help.

- Nitro stouts generally work well for a top dark layer ie. Guinness or Murphy's
- Regular stouts and porters generally work well for a bottom dark layer
- Black lagers may work well for either a top or bottom dark layer
- When in doubt as to whether to try the dark beer on the top or bottom, try the dark beer on the top first. You will be able to tell right away if it works or not. If it doesn't layer and the dark beer drops down quickly into the lighter bottom layer, reversing the layers will often result in a good combination.

These rules say 'generally' because there are beers that will layer over a Guinness Draught (ie Miller Lite) and beers that will layer under a porter (ie Franconia Wheat). Black lagers may work well as a dark bottom layer or a dark top (ie Bottom: New Belgium 1554, Top: Shiner Black Lager).

Love me some good Half & Half action

Save ya money and get a spoon. Love me some good Half & Half action. With all do respect to the people of Ireland I would never order a black and tan. Check your history people. Heading to an American/Irish fest this weekend and thought this would be good to hand to the tap pourers bc they always screw it up. But this thing sux doesnt control the easing of the guiness on top like a well placed bent spoon and besides the ya got to pour so slow the the beer spill back out of the bottle and ends up on your counter. moving on

Cool little gadget!

This is a pretty cool little gadget. I plan on buying several for stocking stuffers. One thing I discovered...it doesn't work very well with the canned nitro Guinness. Not very well at all. That was disappointing, visually, but it still tasted good! And it seems like I can only find the nitro Guinness nowadays. Anyway, I'll have to try another brand. As an aside, I had good results (visible layering) with other colors and types of beers.

This should work like a dream, much better than a spoon

I haven't used this yet but just knowing I have it is wonderful. I love Yuengling Black and Tan but can't get it in Missouri, it costs a lot to ship it, so this will be my answer when I want a black and tan. Few bartenders know what it is let alone how to make it, I've been a bit shy to try it so now I have the ability to have a black and tan whenever I want. I bought one for a friend too so she can make them at home, although I know she has one place that can and will make them for you. Glad to find it.

This tool really works!!!

It took a couple of tries to get it to work. For me the key was leaving some head on the Bass Ale (the bottom beer). Also, for the Guinness, use the Guinness that comes in a 14.9 oz can with the nitrogen ball on the inside. I first tried it with bottled Guinness and it did not work. That said, the beer was not wasted. So, from my third try and going forward I have enjoyed perfect Black and Tans. An upside-down spoon never worked for me. This is the greatest bar tool that I have bought. It is fun to prepare Black and Tans for family and friends.

As a bartender, one should know how to pour layered drinks without this device. I however, CAN NOT!! This product is AWESOME. It pours the perfect black & tan. Snake bite. And shots too. You just have to place it properly. Thank you!!

So impressed. EASY!

So impressed with this. Too many times did I order a Black and Tan at a restaurant and had it delivered too me in a big dark mess. This perfectly separates the two. I poured the Blue Moon in, with no foam, then the Guinness, making sure that when you pour the Guinness this 'device' is not sitting high above where the Blue Moon sits.

Not a silver bullet for pouring a Black and Tan.
by Snohoman (3 out of 5 stars)

I love a good Black and Tan. The way it looks and the way it tastes. I have already had trouble making the perfect Black and Tan so I thought I would give this a try. I'm still trying to get a good Black and Tan pour using this device. It seems like it should work, but I haven't mastered it yet. I haven't given up on it yet, but this is no Black and Tan silver bullet.

A must have if you like Black and Tans.

Owned this beauty for over 3 years and have used hundreds of times. Makes a perfect Black and Tan and IMO much better than the spoon. Fits even large glasses like my huge glass beer mug. Hasn't shown any wear and still looks like new despite hundreds of washings. I do hand wash it (takes seconds). Highly recommended.

The perfect gift for the beer afficionado

Ok, I fell in love with the snakebite a few years ago and struggled with separating the stout from the cider. That is until I discovered this little gem. Like the name says, its the perfect way to pour your stout/cider or stout/ale. A must have for parties or any home bar toolkit.

Works Great
by scott a smith (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought this for my son (In college and a bartender) and myself (homebrewer). We both love it. It is the easiest black and tan pour on the market and I have used many of them. My son got it in the mail and brought it into the bar where he works and asked for a black and tan to be poured using it. It poured perfectly. He was not working at the time, but the bartenders that were working that night ended up pouring black and tans for the rest of the customers that saw it at work. A true novelty that works well for American style Black and Tans. In the UK, they don't split them. Too bad, they are missing out on a cool thing. A great product. Try it with hard cider. It also works best if you use Nitrogen based stout for the top beer on the pour.
