Multiple Bulbs and Strips Dead Within 4 Years
by M. Adams (1 out of 5 stars)
January 7, 2019

I decked out my home in 2015 with quite a sizeable collection of Philips Hue products: two lightstrips, several White & Color bulbs; and loads of Hue Whites. I spent a hefty chunk of change on all this, and at the time justified the purchase with Philips's claim of a roughly 20+ year lifespan for the bulbs with average usage.

Fast forward less than four years later. Half of my White & Colors (the expensive ones) have died, several LEDs on one of my Lightstrips are permanently stuck on a green color, and several of the White bulbs have bit the dust.

I'm a software engineer, and I take pretty impeccable care of my stuff. The failure rate on this product is simply unacceptable, given its price and the implication that these lights can last a quarter of a century.

Sorry, Philps. I'll be going with a cheaper alternative moving forward. There are several more competitors in the space than there were when I first entered, and I'm sure they won't have much trouble at least matching your QC.

Really fun, cool and lots of options...not essential, however
by Devlin (5 out of 5 stars)

Don't get me wrong, these DO cost a great deal of money but I really like them. I was absolutely 100% unsure if I would have buyers remorse right away and I think that anxiety stems from the fact I don't have a great deal of disposable income so I like to make sure I get the best bang for the buck. At first, this did not fall under that category. That being said, I saw a deal on a refurbished set for around 108 bucks so I pulled the proverbial trigger. If you can get these refurbished, I think they are an absolute great value! Here is what I found:

The setup was particularly easy as it consisted of plugging in the bridge (I got the first generation kit) and then downloading the app to my phone. I also have a Wink hub but when I first looked, I did not see an option to combine them (recently I just did so maybe an update?). After I got the app on my phone, I was then able to make an account (this is required for remote access to the lights) and then search for the lights. The lights were found much quicker than the GE Link bulbs I bought previously but those were good as well.

Here is a quick rundown of setup:

Screw in bulbs (I have mine in a candelabra to A26 adapter as I wanted them in the living room and the fan only had the small sockets)

Plug in bridge with Ethernet cable (it is not wireless) and power

Download App to phone

Make sure bulbs are turned on

Create an account or sign in with Google (I'd recommend making an account as my IFTTT is having issues and I think its related to the Google signin)

Press button on bridge

Search for lights

Name lights and/or group for rooms

Have fun! Or if you have an Echo or FireTV, ask to search for smart devices and you will need to press the Hue bridge button again right after asking and they should all be found. From what I have found, there isn't a very easy way to change colors via Alexa but you can absolutely easily turn on, off and dim each or a group of bulbs. It is truly great if you can get them at this price point.

Is it necessary? No. Are there cheaper options? Yes...not a lot cheaper though as Osram Lightify RGBW bulbs are 39.99 each and I see deals for Hue bulbs about 10 or 15 more. If they lower the price on those or a brand called "Qube" comes out of crowd funding, I would check those out.

One of the last things that I will mention is that I really like how easy it is to schedule lights to turn on and off via the native app. It is a little more intuitive than Wink but Wink is still evolving (still my favorite so far, though).

Overall, I would probably not like these at 200 for 3 bulbs but for 100 and some change, absolutely! Also, if you do not like them, they seem to hold their value pretty well!

Especially awesome with some third-party apps and IFTTT
by Juniorverse (5 out of 5 stars)

Coupled with some good third-party apps and things like IFTTT, these lights are fantastic (see below). Talk about a wow factor when people see how they look and what they can do. It took me a year to get over the price of the starter kit, but I'm glad I finally took the plunge when the price dropped for a day.

Setup of the A19 Starter Kit was easy. Plug in the lights and the hub, install the official Hue app, press a button on the Hub, and you're pretty much done. I downloaded numerous third-party Android apps and my two favorite Android apps are called "Huerray!" and "Ambieye" because they not only allow you to create "rooms" that can each be handled separately, but they also contain a lot of features that the Philips app does not. With "Huerray!" you can create color scenes AND animations in each room. You can also set alarms, create animated moods from your scene palettes, use NFC tags to trigger colors, and even use your device's microphone to listen to music and have the lights dance to the music! It works great. "Ambieye" has some unique features, like offering hundreds of color palettes from a website called Color Lovers, so you can select a favorite palette and apply static color schemes or animated ones based on the palettes submitted by users from around the world. I also installed a Chrome extension called Lightswitch Pro (which is identical to the "Ambieye" Android app above) that allows me to do the same things as in the "Ambieye" app using a button in my Chrome web browser.
"IFTTT" (If This Then That) is a powerful app and website that allows you change your lights based on triggers. The functionality is huge. You can set it up so your lights go off when your phone leaves your house and turn them back on when the phone comes back home. Or you can make it so the lights come on or off at certain times of the day automatically. You can even change the colors when the weather changes! I have mine set to change to a mellow blue theme when rain is detected in my town. I also have it set up so my lights flash when I get a new e-mail from certain people. IFTTT is a must-try when you get your Hue... and it's free!

These lights are expensive but oh so addictive. It will take me a while to do every room in the house because of the cost, but I can now see myself doing it. Thanks a lot, Philips. :)

Great But Not Practical For Primary Lighting
by Jennifer E Stevens (5 out of 5 stars)

These really are cool. However I found that the "Reading" light setting was not as bright as I would have liked. The other colors are pretty fun to play with but not practical when you are using these for your primary lights. If you have excess lights around the house that you want to play with and have excess money to spend then I would get these.

Love the flexibility!!
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)

We have had these bulbs in the family room for about one week. The family's impressions are split. Dad and youngest son (10) love the lights. We like to experiment with different moods and settings. Oldest son likes being able to turn off the light that is directly above him (I am not sure what that says about him) but other appears unimpressed. My wife just wants "regular old" light. However, we are now able to dim the lights near the television while keeping strong light above my wife so that she can continue her knitting projects. This sort of flexibility is "fantastic!!"

Also, last night my wife heard a noise and was startled awake. Of course she wakes me up and says "what was that?" I have no clue. But using my iPhone, I was able to turn on all the lights in the family room from our bedside and listened for any actual "intruder escaping" sounds before venturing out of bed. Now she is asking about hue use on some of the outside lights.

Why not five stars, I have noticed that two of the six hue bulbs hum relatively loudly. The noise is about the same as the x-box and playstation game systems that we have. I had not noticed it until this morning when the boys finally went back to school and the house was quiet (for the first time since Christmas break started). I tracked down the hum (the Hue's make this easy because you can turn each light on and off individually). I will contact customer service and if this is resolved quickly I will likely bump this to a five star rating because the hue lights...are...just...too...cool!

Easy to use and great investment.
by Linda (5 out of 5 stars)

We have had this kit for almost a year now. We love them. The lights were super easy to set up and really easy to use. You simply screw the bulb in, set up the hub, and connect with the app on your phone. The app is really easy to navigate and makes changing the settings really quick. We have set up the lights with our Alexa and that makes it even better. The colors of the lights are really fun. The kids love changing the colors when watching movies to fit the "theme" of the movie they are watching.I like being able to change the tone of the lights. I turn the blue tone lights to orange tones at night so we are not so stimulated before bed. I also love it when I get a migraine and can change the color and intensity of the light so it no longer agitates me. The lights also give off little heat so we do not need to worry about heating up our place in the middle of the summer. We are planning on getting more bulbs to have all of our lights connected. I like that one hub will work with enough bulbs to fill our home. This product is well worth the investment.

The gold standard for smart home lighting, expensive and needy though!
by Tom Steele,Top Contributor: Cycling (5 out of 5 stars)

There are a lot of nitpicking complaints I have about this kit, but overall it is pretty good. And somewhat of the gold standard for smart home lighting. I bought this kit because it is gen one and saved me money and honestly the lights are pretty good. They DO NOT reproduce GREEN very well, so if you are looking for GREEN in particular, then look elsewhere.

Overall though, they work very well and although they are expensive, I haven't found anything significantly cheaper at the time of this writing so the Philips Hue are generally the way to go. They work with Alexa.

Biggest complaint is that EVERYTHING you do requires a visit to the hub to press the button (Wink hub on the other hand does not require this!) and you will want to mount your hub somewhere easily accessible because you will be visiting it quite a bit, even after you have installed and set up your lights!

A good product, possibly a great one if you don't like green
by JASON H. (4 out of 5 stars)

The Good:

Extremely easy setup, I really like the app and the fact it has an iOS widget. IFTTT integration is very useful (and pretty much the reason I got the thing) and works well with my Staples Connect too. I use these with IFTTT and Staples Connect to do all sorts of things from letting me know when someone's at my front door to when it's snowing to what the day's high temperature will be (approximately). The possibilities are nearly endless.

The Bad:

Zigbee range is not that great. I have 2 in my hallway and one in my bedroom - there's less than 15-20 feet between a light and its nearest neightbor and I had to play around with the hub positioning and changing Zigbee channels until I found the sweet spot. Occasionally one will still fail to respond.

Limited color range: Forget greens. Their "green" is a sickly looking yellow. Blues aren't strong either. Whites, red, pink, purple, yellow, and orange are fine. I understand this was an engineering tradeoff for better-looking whites but why even have a setting for green at all?

Nice, but the application needs a lot of work.
by Connie W (3 out of 5 stars)
June 13, 2015

First let me say, I do like this product. It's nice to be able to have lighting automated and the ability to remotely control them is a plus. I'm not sure I will use the color scenes very often. I probably should have saved a lot more money by purchasing the kit that only has white lights. What is such a downer is for the extremely high price you pay for this product, the application is one of the worst I've seen. It is cumbersome and not intuitive at all. There are no instructions for operating the software, other than to get the bridge and lights set up to be recognized by the bridge.

No problem adding to existing set up.
by Jim Man (5 out of 5 stars)

Originally bought the hue lux system and wanted to add color to my layout. Found this on Amazon for around 120. I had no problems adding these bulbs to my existing hue setup as stated in another review. All I did to add these bulbs in my current setup is add their serial numbers to the app during setup and it added them with no problems at all. My hue set up works very well with my Amazon Alexa (better than the apps themselves do) The lux bulbs are a bit brighter but if you want to add color this works well.
