Use the technique but purchase a quality brand when you do!by AllAboutReviews (1 out of 5 stars)

So I am one who is used to baking out of the box and have never had an issue. I had a friend give these mixes to my daughter given their spunk. The other night, 3 adults and 3 children decided to have some fun and take a shot at it. We follwed the directions step by step. Mixing the batter was no issue, coloring the batter was simple and came out vibrant! We were making a 2 layer cake and the instructions and actions were simple. When did we hit our first issue? When we baked them! The cakes failed to rise. When we removed them from their respective pan they were approximately 1in thick and cooked all the way through! They held together, they did not crumble. Okay kids, lets put them together and ice them because they are still pretty! Kids were excited until they put the first bite in their mouths which they spit out! They could only taste a mouthful of icing and flavorless cake mix. We threw the other box out, why waste our time again?!?! I have lots of food coloring and will make this again BUT with a respected cake brand. It was purchased at the cheaper price, but save it for a quality mix.

It was easy to make but did not have enough food coloring that it called for.

I try all different cake mixes with my kids, by all different cake brands. They saw this and wanted to get it. When I read the box instructions I thought it seemed like a lot of work, but it actually was pretty easy, I had my kids help, it was a fun thing to do for them and easy enough. The cake itself is delicious. It has a different flavor and texture than the average Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines. It is very light but smooth, and it is not overly sweet. It reminds me of cakes I have made from scratch with real cake flour. I do see that it is a little crumbly but it holds together just fine. I loved the taste of it and I would want to try more of these. We might do the camo one next.
Re: The bad reviews and problems people are saying they had. I did not have this issue. Before I made the cake I googled some images of it and also looked it up on Instagram. Many of the photos I saw looked like a disaster hot mess so I was a little nervous. But I had no issues and mine came out totally the way I had hoped. I did this in two 8 inch rounds. A couple notes: I used crisco and flour to dust the pan, I did not use cooking spray. Mix it the way it says, don't over mix. Don't mess with the layers and push them around with a spatula, just do it the way it says and drop them in. The food coloring comes in packets so if you cut the corner of the food coloring packet you can enable it to squeeze out in drops. My cake came out great. It rose, the colors looked awesome, it came out of the pan easily, and it did not fall apart at all. I even picked the layers up and flipped them a couple times when I was deciding which way to frost it. I will say it is a slightly crumbly cake. All cakes crumble, but when you cut this cake and drag the knife across the layers, the crumbs from one color travel across the other colors and it can look messy. But this was not a problem. I dusted off the crumbs and took a bunch of photos of the cut cake for Instagram, I was so proud of how it looked. Maybe this product was changed since the original shipment, I really don't know.
Yup, should have read the reviews

I'm testing out ideas for my twin's smash cakes. When I saw this at a local store I grabbed the last two boxes to try out. I don't think I'll be making that second box after all.
The pros- the mix was a fairly standard boxed mix. The colors were easy to mix up and it didn't take as much time or as many dishes as I thought it might. And in the end, I do have three 4" cakes that *look* very nice.
The cons- technically, to make each colored layer listed you would probably need two boxes for 8" cakes. Or just have very thin layers. I made red, yellow, blue, and green layers and still ran out of dye. I substituted standard cheep liquid food coloring and actually liked the color better. My cakes didn't fall apart like others stated, but the texture was off. Some crumbs but wet like it wasn't fully cooked. I baked for 22min in 4" pans so it was more than enough. After trying the tops I leveled (oh and it rips when you level it) the taste was bland and well, like food coloring. Then, when I cut the decorated cakes, the smell was terrible. Not worth the calories so it was tossed out.
I do love the idea though. I would recommend using whatever white cake mix you like and adding gel color for the same effect. Better taste and you can use less coloring. With the end result, I'm really disappointed I paid three times as much as any other mix for three color packets and bad cake.

I made these for an after school snack on my son's first day of school. He and his friends loved it! The colors were so bright, vibrant, and fun! Very easy to make and so easy to achieve the rainbow 🌈 effect in my bundt pan. I didn't have any issue at all with the cake rising. Will definitely be buying again!

I did the pink camouflage cake which was a lot of fun so I tried this one. I don't cook so this wasn't too complex I enjoyed! We made Budda cupcakes!

Got this as a gift, finally pulled it out to make it tonight... Cake is absolutely delicious, unlike any other box cake I've ever had... I searched online to find others, we loved it so much!
Easy to make, and the color packet, although small, is more than sufficient for the colors.
It is a light cake, not a dense texture. And delicious all the way through... Does not need frosting! Good enough on its own.

Got it for $2 on clearance at a grocery store. It wasn't super difficult just needed a lot of dishes. I picked up a plastic set of 6 rainbow dishes at Wmart for like $1.80 that had enough for each color and were the perfect size. The cake came out well despite my error- didn't see that it was egg white only and did three whole eggs. Added some flour to balance out the extra moisture.
If you're worried about it sticking to the pan, try Baker's Joy or a similar flour cooking spray. Worked well with a cream cheese icing. You can add some flavoring to the batter if you need to but colorless ones would be best. Texture was great, better than most box mixes. Overall it was a really fun experience to make with friends.
