The design's a little clunky, but the good outweighs the bad

First things first: When this set was originally released, fans quickly noticed that the Flux Capacitor piece contained an egregious typo. (It asked you to "SHEILD EYES FROM LIGHT" rather than "SHIELD EYES ...") I ordered and received this set in June 2014, and it came with the updated piece with the proper spelling of "SHIELD." So if you order this set now, chances are you won't have to go through the pesky replacement process if you want the correct spelling on your Flux Capacitor.

As for the set ... look, there was no way I was passing it up. The Back to the Future trilogy remains one of my favorite film series, and I relished the chance to own a Lego version of the iconic DeLorean. This set contains both Marty and Doc minifigures (both featuring two different facial expressions), along with a skateboard for Marty. It provides the pieces and instructions to build one of three different configurations of the DeLorean. I went with the Part III version as it includes the steam punk-ish electronics on the hood which (a) look cool and (b) cover up a hood design that's stepped instead of sloped and doesn't look all that great in the Part I and II versions.

There are other things about the design that aren't ideal. The fact that both characters don't seem to fit inside the vehicle at the same time is a bummer. And the doors that open upward (just like in the movie) are cleverly constructed but flimsy as hell. They're connected by a single stud and will fall off if you're opening and closing them too much.

Still, any negatives are made up for by the fact that the wheels are designed to rotate under the car for when you want to put it in flying mode ... and that you can build a Mr. Fusion for the rear ... and that the set comes with both the original "OUTATIME" license plate as well as the bar code plate from the future. It's clear that, despite some design quirks, a lot of love went into this thing. Back to the Future fans should not pass it up.

... When this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour ... you're gonna see some serious brick.

A friend bought this as well, but keeps this collectors item sealed in the box which is like buying vinyl and never listening to it. If you buy this, do open it, and do build it. This is a really cool set. You get the option to make one of three versions of the DeLorean (from each film), and you can easily go back and change it to a different one once a build is complete or just combine elements to make your own. I'd definitely rather look at the built kit than a picture of it on a box.

Only critique is that the Doc Brown figure from the Lego Dimensions kit has better hair. I saw it on sale at a store and added it for pair o' Docs (I'm so sorry).

generationxdad review Back to the future lego

Generation X throw back! Back to the Future!!! Hands down one of the best set of movies ever made. I'll never forget watching Dr. Emmett 'Doc' Brown and Marty McFly traveling through time, riding a hover board, wild wild west, and the iconic DeLorean!!!! When I heard that Lego was going to create a DeLorean Lego I knew that my son and I were going to build this together! I made a big deal out of this, we started by watching all three movies before putting the DeLorean together!

After watching all the movies it was time to sit down have have some enjoyable father and son time!

In my years I've spend a lot of time building Legos but nothing beats sitting down with my son and building Lego creations together!
401 pieces! I was a surprised by how many pieces were needed to create this awesome Lego! Very happy with the instructions! This Lego was really easy to put together however I don't think son (only 8 y/o) could have finished alone. Lego recommends 10+ and I agree.

After a little more then an hour we finished,

Final Review:

I love that with just a few changes you can change the DeLorean to match the individual movies. Well played Lego!!!!

Great toy! Worth every penny. Fun project to work on on with your kids on a rainy afternoon.

Generation X dad gives this toy two huge thumbs up!

Generation X son also gives this toy two thumbs up!

If you're a fan of both Legos and Back to the Future

This an awesome set. I was a little concerned when I got it. I am fairly certain this set ships from Canada or something, because the graphics are slightly different fro most sets I've seen in the states, and everything is printed in English and French. As soon as I opened the box I was hooked. The quality in this set is just a little bit above everything else I've gotten from Lego. The box has flaps and opens like a briefcase so you don't destroy it while opening it. Then when I pulled out the instruction booklet its not a thin set of paper instructions, its more like a commemorative booklet with facts about the movie, as well as the story of how the creators of the set were able to make it happen. Everything about this set makes it feel like a collector's edition set.

Everything so far is just the gravy though, lets get to the set. The details on this set are superb. There are no decals, all of the decal pieces have everything printed on them. It has the flux capacitor, a couple of gauges, and then the piece right on the dash with the actual dates from the first movie leaving 1985 and going back to 1958. It also comes with both of the license plates used in the three movies, I prefer the California OUTATIME plate, but it also has the orange 2015 barcoded plate that even has the state and the date on it. Both of the doors swing open, and the wheels swing down to mimic flying as displayed on the front of the box. It even has some clear pieces that act as a stand underneath it so that you can mimic hovering if you decide to display it like that. It also comes with all of the pieces necessary to make the changes that happened to the car though out the movies.

I only have two tiny complaints regarding this set. The first is that the docs hair is designed in such a way that he doesn't fit in the car, and its just barely that he doesn't fit, so I have mine set up so it looks like he's getting in, but Marty does fit in the car with no problems. The other slight thing is that I would have loved to have seen Doc's dog as part of the set, but like I said these are both trivial things. The detail in the characters is fantastic, the both have two faces you can switch between smiling, and being afraid, then the other face is covered by the hair.

In conclusion, if you know someone who is a fan of both Legos and the Back to the Future movies I highly recommend this set. The detail is fantastic, and you can't beat the price. The best bang for your buck that I've seen in a lego set in quiet a while.

A good set, but not perfect!

This is a fun LEGO set that has a lot of options. I wasn't expecting to be able to pick which version of the DeLorean that I was going to be able to make. I only assumed that the one from Back to the Future 2 (as pictured on the box) was the one that I was going to make. Subsequently, it's the version I DID make, but it's nice to have the option to do any of the 3 versions of the car.

The minifigures are great representations of the characters, and have 2 faces each. One side of each is smiling/smirking, and the other side is a panic/screaming face. These are pretty much the only faces you'll need to recreate your favorite scenes from the movies.

The only problem I have with the set is the car. There are some amazing little details that make this set really unique but I'm not entirely happy with the hood of the car, though. I feel like that could have been done differently to make it look more like the real thing. But, I can't complain too much about that. I would have only taken half a star for that, but seeing as Amazon only deals in whole numbers, it sadly gets an entire star taken off. :(

I would definitely recommend this set for anyone who's thinking about it, but if you're overly critical of designs because you're a huge fan, you're more than welcome to switch the set up with your own bricks to make it the LEGO DeLorean of your dreams. I know I did. :)

Now, we just need a time-traveling train and we'll be good...

Must have!

Bought this for my 7 year old. Box is well made collector quality and it closes shut just like a pizza box. The instruction booklet it thick and also collectors quality. It has information about the movie and the guy whow designed this Lego piece The car was easy to put together. My 7 year old only needed help a few times due to him placing a piece backwards. The car come with two sets of rims, gray and red. It also comes with two license plates, the original white one and the orange futuristic one. I would have liked to have had a windshield though. The two pieces that extend up to the roof do not attach to anything on top and move out of place. Overall the car looks amazing and the attention to detail is awesome. This piece has earned a permanent spot in the livingroom.

Blast to the Past
by Chris M Hardy (5 out of 5 stars)

So I am an avid Lego collector, as well as a child of the eighties, so when I saw this show up on Lego and then on Amazon I had to have it. As a kit, it has a few issues. The cab of the DeLorean has stability issues and I feel like this set really could due with a Ultimate Collector Edition.

The bottom line is that if you want to take a blast to your past and spend about two hours putting together a nice little kit (mine sits in my office), or if you want to introduce the young person in your life to Back To the Future, while communing over lego, I really don't feel like you can go wrong.

It was a great idea, but what happened to LEGO's quality?!
by Karen K. Hart (3 out of 5 stars)

My nine-year-old son was really excited about this DeLorean; he's loved playing with it; it's a great concept. But what he just brought to my attention is the fact that SEVEN of the blocks in the set are cracked! He hasn't been eating them; he hasn't smashed them with a hammer. I think most of us have, at some point, stepped on LEGO bricks without doing any damage to the bricks. So all I can figure is that the pieces in this set are made of extremely junky, cheap plastic. This isn't what I expect from a company we've trusted for decades.
"I don't mind the fact that it falls apart a lot," says my son. Well, I'm glad that he doesn't mind, but I do care if the items I'm buying are of poor quality and won't last.

Great set, but the mini-figs don't fit in the completed car!
by Meg Brunner (4 out of 5 stars)
May 9, 2014

Love the set, but was SHOCKED to find that after assembly, the mini-figs don't actually fit into the car (unless you take off their hair, which seems a bit extreme). First time I've ever encountered such an obvious design flaw in a LEGO product. I asked a few others with the set if they'd had the same experience, just in case I'd assembled it wrong, and they all said, "Yep, they don't fit." I also noticed there are no photos of the figs in the car on the box or in the booklet either, which is suggestive the problem is legit too (and not just from an error in build on my part). I can modify it to make them fit, but still -- kind of disappointing and very surprising from LEGO!

It's going to be hard getting the Flux Capacitor to work if Doc has to operate it while sitting on the ROOF!

Perfect Gift

I bought this for my Fiance for Christmas. He had saw it and wanted it so I decided to surprise him. It arrived on time. I gave it to him and he immediately opened it up. He's always been a lego fan and has been building for years. It took him about 30-45 minutes or so to complete this 400 piece set.

The set includes all the pieces to create the Delorean plus a few extra pieces to add on to make 3 different versions of the car. Mind you, the pieces that are given to make the different versions all use the same Delorean base so you're not getting 3 separate cars.

This product includes Marty, Doc, and a skateboard also.

He was pleased with this gift and enjoyed putting it together. I'd say it would be easy enough for my 10 year old to put together also.

Instructions were easy to read and well put.

Will buy future lego sets from Amazon again!
