Waste of Money

This kit is definitely not worth the money I paid for it. You are better off just buying the pink curing salt from Amazon and a large ziplock baggie or food grade plastic container.

Makes good pork belly, but without smoking capabilities it is not much like bacon

This was a fun idea, but ultimately not that successful. Maybe if I had a smoker it would have been more bacony, but as it was the meat never got that wonderful bacon flavor. For $22 for the kit (one time use) and $50 for 5 pounds of high quality pork belly, my money would have been better spent on the thick cut stuff from Whole Foods.

I loved makin' this bacon...!

My daughter gave me this kit for Christmas. This kit makes it super easy to cure the pork belly to end up with really delicious bacon. I purchased 5 pounds of pork belly at Costco, and followed the instructions, and ended up with a fantastic tasting bacon that everyone loves. Two friends came over who heard how good the bacon was, and I had to cook some for them to let them taste it. They wanted more. It takes a bit of patience curing it, and turning it over every other day in the refrigerator, but it is well worth the wait. I was surprised just how good it was. I'll purchase this myself again.

Fun project!

We bought the pork belly for about $40 at our local butcher. The process of curing it is super easy, takes seven days, flip it over every day.

When that is over, you dry it off and bake it for about two hours. We didn't have time to actually cook any bacon that day, so we let it cool and put it back in the fridge. A couple days later I cut off about 1/2 a pound and fried it for a pasta dish.
* It's super easy to cut, I was worried I would cut even pieces, but I did just with a basic butcher knife.
* It fried up exactly like any other bacon I had made.
* The smell wasn't as "bacony" as store bought bacon so I was slightly worried about the taste.
* It ended up tasting great, more on the sweet side.

You can either cook it in the oven or a smoker, but we don't have one of those. I would try the smoker if you have one, I wonder if it would give it that "bacony" smell that was missing. I'm sure the flavor would be very different as well.

Overall, a great product, fun to make your own bacon. Now that I have made it once, I think I will continue to buy pork belly and make my own recipe for curing it. This would make an excellent and unique gift for any bacon lover.

My husband made his bacon this last week. Very easy directions, take about 1 week to cure and then 2-3 hours on the smoker. Followed exactly and the bacon was excellent!!

I highly recommend this kit, especially if you have a smoker and don't know how to make your own bacon. It includes everything you need (except the actual fresh pork belly). It is very simple and well explained. It requires very little effort. One week curing in the refrigerator, then smoking (opt.). I ended up with a delicious, salty, sugary slab of bacon. I had it sliced professionally. Simply beautiful. This kit was worth every penny because it taught me how easy it is to make my own bacon. I am already looking forward to my next batch. In case you're wondering, I used apple wood for smoking. The smoking process took a little more than two hours.

A great gift for anyone who loves bacon and especially for those with access to a smoker! Seriously good job on this product. Thanks!
