Product Description
RGB LED Shades! They're colorful, bright, hackable, and the ultimate expression of blinky awesomeness. A great way to learn programming and electronics, yet just as entertaining for experienced tinkerers. But if you need a stunning fashion accessory without writing code, they're pre-loaded with dazzling patterns out of the box! RGB Shades are programmable slotted shade sunglasses with an array of 68 bright full-color pixels on the front. The LEDs can show different colors by mixing levels of red, green, and blue...just like the screen on your computer or phone. An integrated Arduino-compatible microcontroller controls the color of each pixel to display a wide range of colorful animations. Though the LEDs are bright from the outside...REALLY bright...they're almost invisible from the inside. You can see through the slots just fine (as well as boring, normal slotted shades anyway).Top Reviews
A great platform for attention-grabbing wearable hacksby Jamie Flournoy (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought these and they were exactly as described: bright and fun, and programmable (there is an Arduino-compatible microcontroller on board that is responsible for setting the patterns that show on the LEDs).
These are Macetech brand RGBShades, bundled with a battery pack and a power-only USB cable. Macetech's web site has extensive documentation on how to program them using the Arduino IDE, and how to attach additional components such as a real-time clock. I was able to get the RTC added and program the shades to act as a countdown clock for New Year's Eve, and they were a big hit. (See my GitHub page for the code, and the attached photo for an idea of what the clock looked like) The battery pack kept them going for over an hour; I didn't feel like wearing them anymore and took them off well before the battery ran out, so I don't know what the actual maximum is.
There are two buttons on the right side near the front of the earpiece. The preinstalled software uses these for brightness and to switch the pattern shown on the LEDs, but you could program them to do whatever you want. You can also add components via the digital and analog I/O that is available on the right earpiece.
The LEDs are extremely, almost painfully bright when set to 100% brightness, so the software keeps the brightness in a dimmer, more useful range. But if you have a reason to want them to be super-bright, you can disable that in a custom program. Clearly, more brightness is going to use power faster and the LEDs will get noticeably hot.
They have a standard USB Mini Type B connector, so you won't have trouble finding a data cable if you want to program them. (I already had one.)
If you are an Arduino tinkerer and are thinking of getting these, I strongly encourage you to do so. They are a fun wearable project and will give you lots of inspiration for hacking ideas once you start fiddling around with the software.
These shades are awesome at night

These shades are awesome at night! You must see these glasses in person to really appreciate how bright they are, but I can say they are well built and very easy to control. They come with a battery that last about two hours, but if you want them to last more you can easily upgrade you pack with another USB enabled pack. I haven't had any issues with my vision when I have them on and the LED lights are reprogramable if you are into that.
If you want to be the center of attention at a party, club, or nighttime parade get these shade.

Super cool glasses, but fragile. a few modifications with the design, and battery and the the product would be 5 stars!

It's very cool, Videos don't achieve the full beauty of the lights because they are strong, and either you use flash to show the face but than you loose the perspective, or you don't use the flash and the lights are so strong that your camera will blur. In person, live, it's even better. really a cool cool item for a party.
Great conversation starter.

These glasses are the cutting edge. Wore these to an EDM festival and got compliments both nights. Only saw one other person with them on. The brightness is adjustable and you can switch between brightness and design modes with a simple push of the button. A lot of people asked me if they refracted light from the light-show, the answer is no. It's like wearing shutter sunglasses and you forget about having them on and they don't interfere with your view besides acting like a colorful flashlight so you can see in the dark.
For me, this really was a fashion statement and the changing colors coordinated with my outfits nicely. The shades are well made and sturdy so I was afraid of damaging them. There is a cord that connects the battery pack to the shades so you need to plan for that. Other than that, LOVE this product and will be using it for future events.

Same exact thing as Macetech RGB shades. Google them. They are only $129 (but they dont come with the super cheap usb battery!). These even have the Macetech logo on them, so I'm assuming they buy the Macetech shades for $129, put a couple custom programs on it (Macetech shades come with almost all the programs you see in the video) and resell them for $60+.
