Not sure why but my larger cat likes to roll himself up in things as if he's a furry burrito. He also likes scratching low pile carpeting. With this he can do both! This is 2 separate, decently sized pieces of carpeting that easily accomodates both cats-only 1 piece has the cut outs and velcro attachments so you can shape it virtually however you, or your cat, prefer. It's made from recycled plastic bottles (as if it couldn't get any better) so the soft (& washable) material also acts as a heat retainer keeping kitties warm. It's easily foldable and comes in a resealable plastic bag for travel or storage. The bottom piece has "no-slip" backing to keep in place. (Note: SOME non-slip backings may possibly "yellow" vinyl floors/ linoleum). Received this today and tried a few configurations. At first both cats seemed curious but a little nervous of the velcro sound when I'd adjust it but then they started to explore, popping in and out of the holes, playfully poking at each other. And yes, this 25 pound marmalade angel fits quite well through the larger holes and likes popping his tiny head out like a periscope. Cats like having their own little space where they can feel secure and warm so this is perfect and can easily be moved from room to room. I'm always on the lookout for things that both cats can enjoy together. As you can see both he-and his much larger Golden sister-are already very comfortable in their little private hideaway. He's come out once but went right back in. I have a feeling he's going to be in there for a while. UPDATE: We've had this a few months now and it's still in full use by both cats & in pristine condition. No signs of wear/ tear. If they don't lay in it they'll lay on it, so must be something they like about the material. FINALLY got pics of smaller kitty playing in it. She's very rarely still enough.

I have to say, when I opened the package, I didn't get it. It is is this lumpy brown rug that I laid down on my kitchen floor and thought, there goes $40. But wait a second, here come my cats. I have three. They immediately started playing with it. I've now had it for a couple of weeks and the cats absolutely love it. They drag their possessions to the rug (and some of mine, too) and hide things, they play, they nap, they just really like it. So, it isn't lovely to MY eyes, but, then I'm not a cat. To my cats, this is nirvana.

My twins Peanut and Skippy absolutely LOVE this rug. Usually they get bored with some of their interactive toys, but not so with the ripple rug. I can form new tunnels and caves, so it is always changing. I throw toys in the holes, they bat at each other from both sides, and even sleep inside. The quaility of the product is excellent. I was going to put it away for awhile, but they are too attached! I love cat toys that encourage creative play and foster intellectual stimulation and the ripple rug is just that!

At first I hesitated to buy this since $39.99 seemed a steep price for what is basically one rug on top of the other and I figured I could make one myself for a much lower price but then I read through the sellers description and realized how much effort they went to to make this a SAFE toy for cats. No chemicals (no VOC's), they tested the strength of the bond on the velcro attached to it, Non-Toxic; Mold, Mildew, and Stain resistant, the list goes on... so I bought it even knowing it can't be returned after my kids used it. When it arrived, they played in the box like always while I set it up but I never even had a chance to vacuum it first (as suggested) before they were all over it, rolling on it, rubbing their own scent on it. And that was just the bottom piece! When I put the top piece over it and made some hills and tunnels our youngest (10 mo. old female who it was mainly bought for because she's at that annoying "I'm bored all the time" phase") came flying out of nowhere and dove in head first then shot out the other end through another hole without missing a beat! We have 5 cats and every single one of them, including the 12 yr old cranky, granny of the bunch took part in the explorations that first day. She mainly sat on the outside and slapped at Phoebe when she poked her head out but she also likes the feel of it on her claws, too. Precious, our obsessive/compulsive middle child LOVES to chew on the bottom layer. I guess the rubber back feels good but it shows no signs of wear after several days of chewing on the same corner.

So, yeah, DON'T try to make one yourself to save money. Don't be a cheapskate. Just buy it. This is one of the few toys I will be recommending not only to friends but also to my vet and the cat rescue group I help out with. With 5 cats, 4 paws each, this one gets 20 paws up!!!

My cats LOVE THIS THING

I initially saw this rug via Kickstarter and was happy to see it here on Amazon. Quality construction, but more importantly my two cats are going bananas over this. It sounds like a silly thing--a rug with holes and velcro--but it works. Throw some toys in the holes to add to the chaos.
*I updated this review and attached a photo of the rug in action. As per usual, it is covered with cardboard pieces from their destroyed cardboard scratcher that needs to be replaced. Speaking of which, the cats love to scratch on this thing and you will find plenty of their nails on this, so it's a great alternative to them scratching up your couch.
*Updating again. I've bought 3 of these so far, since they collapse onto themselves after a couple months of constant use. I followed the directions on the website on how to re-stiffen the carpet, but they work minimally. The directions say to protect the velcro if throwing in the washing machine, but don't say how, so I just refolded the velcroed carpet onto itself and put on the delicate cycle.

As for ironing, you're essentially melting the plastic on the back, so make sure you have an iron protector on your iron so that gook doesn't accumulate on the actual iron, and make sure you're in a ventilated area. This helped a little, but not much.

Still giving this 4 stars, since it makes my cats so happy. Just wish they lasted longer.
**I can't speak for your own cat--who may be too lazy to crawl in a tunnel or play on a rug-- but it's working for my cats. Well worth the price.

I thought about the Ripple Rug for quite a while before I plunked down the money to buy it, after all for a cat toy...I'm sorry...a "Pet Enrichment System"...it's on the pricey side. As soon as it came I took it out of the packaging and before the top piece was even unfolded my curious felines were on top of the base layer. I have reconfigured it every couple of days and they never seem to grow tired of it, particularly when toys are put through the holes and they have to wiggle through the openings to get them. My cats particularly like hanging out inside of it and using it as concealment for pouncing on their buddies when they walk by, and they love to flail their paws at each other through the holes from opposing sides of the rippled portion.

In all honesty I wish I had bought this before as all my cats love playing with, on, and around this. Despite being fairly expensive I definitely think it's worth the expenditure. If I had one minor critique I would like the top piece to be slightly larger so as to be able to get more elevation in the middle of the ripples without making the footprint so narrow. While eco-conscious humans will appreciate that it's made from recycled plastic bottles, the cats just know it's fun. If you have cats that desperately need to be confused, the Ripple Rug may be just the thing they need to get out of their rut.

My 8-year-old cat Fifi has a decently fun time with this mat. She loves to lay reaaaaaally flat on it, hiding behind the parts that stick up, and pounce on a toy. It's quite funny to watch. That said, the top mat sticks to the bottom one just fine (really well, in fact)... so much so that it's hard to keep any humps or tunnels formed when she runs around on it. My cat doesn't really use it for its intended purpose but still has a fun time using it as an artificial grassland from which to jump out and surprise her prey.

The Ripple Rug is fantastic. I recently rescued a cat and have been on a buying frenzy in learning what he likes and doesn't like. Ding loves to play around it and it's our designated play area. When he's in a frenzy, I lure him into the rug and then drop a squeaking mouse toy in there and he goes crazy in there. When he's resting in his bed, I like to plant some his toys that he likes within the rug and then watch him later as he tries to figure out how to get to it. It's a fantastic invention!

And it also saves my carpet from scratching!

Edit: The Ripple is also starting to serve as a resting place for D. usually he hops onto his bed which is on my bed, but this now gives him a ground level of comfort.

I bought this because of the great reviews, and they're right! My cats immediately jumped into it after I opened it. I recently adopted a fat cat, and she loves it, too! She gets a little stuck in the holes (she is VERY big), but that doesn't stop her from rolling around and having a great time (calorie burning!).

Difficult to Return, Wish I'd Tried Something from a Store

I should have paid closer attention to all their advertisements and descriptions and not purchased this product. Unfortunately my cats haven't given this a second glance after opening (even though they love boxes and brown bags). Maybe they will eventually give it a go but I found that the restock fee, according to their email response to my request for a return, is 20% to 50%, thus, as they point out, it hardly seems worth it.

I wish I had looked a bit at different local stores before trying out a somewhat pricey cat toy. It's understandable that they can't reuse a used toy...they cite hair, smells, etc. But I've thankfully returned toys that didn't work to stores and I think I'll stick with those retailers that have that ability. Good reviews, but didn't work for us and I hope to draw attention to the fact that this is difficult to get your money back on, so if you're on the fence, I wouldn't recommend it.
