Got this for my wife for Christmas, the main component did not work after putting batteries in it. Customer service refused to send a replacement one.
Chrono Decoder is not your friend... plus missing key.... terrible combination

The game itself is fun, the first time we played Prison Break it worked great. Then with Virus the problems began, we were putting the correct keys and we had a wrong buzz sound. We tried it three times and then it worked... but when we decided to play Nuclear Meltdown we put the first correct code and Buzzzzzzz wrong answer... then we got lost in the game trying to find what we were doing wrong.... this took the full hour... we started again out of frustation. Guess what happened next.... another hour of wrong answers.... we had smoke coming out of our heads trying to figure thinking this was too hard, so We gave up and looked for the answer for the first one and it showed we were correct the whole time, the chrono decoder was not working well. So After reseting it I tried to input all the correct codes for the Prison Break again just to see if it was working for the other levels we played, and just worked with the first code, the second code never worked. Then tried it with Virus, the first code never worked. Now I am stuck this chrono decoder that is useless and 5 dissapointed friends.
Just to make matters worst, the game came with one missing key, I think it is the circle key.... so really guys this is not fun. I have spent the rest of the evening trying to find answers on how to fix this issue and from what I am reading the customer service is not that helpful.
Don't buy it until you're ready to play!

I ordered this around Christmas but just played it for the first time three months later. The electronic "Chrono Decoder" feels light and cheap and the first mystery was the odd rattle coming from inside. With the batteries installed, it lit up and appeared to be working. We started the clock and opened the first envelope regarding the prison break.
After a slow start, we eventually settled on a code and dropped the four "keys" into the slots only to hear a loud BUZZ indicating an incorrect answer and one minute penalty. We rechecked everything and decided to change one key. Nope--BUZZ! Were we holding the box backwards? Wrong--BUZZ! New idea, maybe we need to insert the keys faster--BUZZ! Right to left--BUZZ! Simultaneously--BUZZ! We consulted the instruction manual to no avail.
Eventually we decided to look at the clues because between figuring it out and all our incorrect guesses, our time was now below 30 minutes and no one was having fun. Low and behold the final clue just gives you the code, which we had been trying all along. We tried it again and again with no luck.
Because the battery case access requires a screwdriver (why?), I decided I had had enough and opened the entire thing up. It was immediately clear one of the sensors inside the box was dangling freely and the plastic side of the slot that holds it in place had snapped off, causing the unusual rattle. An on-the-spot fix was possible, but probably not permanent. With everything put back together, we restarted the game and very delicately inserted the key into the third slot as to prevent any future damage. Success!
We finished the final two stages and all was well. Hopefully this might help someone else before getting frustrated and smashing the decoder against a wall.
I contacted Spin Master Games about the issue and this was their response:
"We are very sorry to hear about your broken Chrono Decoder. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer a replacement for the decoder."
They also mentioned a 30-day "customer support period," with proof of purchase, "incase[sic] a replacement is applicable."
Not sure if they would be willing to replace the decoder if we had contacted them within the 30 days, so my advice would be hold off on buying this until you are ready to play. Unfortunately there's no way to open the game after purchase and test it to make sure it's working without spoiling one of the four puzzles.
I was planning on packing this back up after playing the four scenarios and giving it away, but because the decoder is so flaky, I wouldn't want to put anyone through the frustration we had with this purchase.
Seriously challenging game!

We purchased this game for our daughter's 13th birthday party. We were able to complete the game in a few minutes shy of the 60 minute time limit. However, when our family try to attempt the second game, we were on successful in completing in the 60 minute limit. In fact, we went over by nearly an hour! These games are most definitely challenging! They certainly will cause frustration at times as well as noted in the game instructions! What we liked most about these games was the lack of any extreme violence or gory images in the story lines. We had purchased a comparable game, and that was certainly not the same case! What we did not like about the game was the inability to play the game in a large party setting. The pictures/clues were very small often times. And in order to study a picture or clue, you were unable to fairly pass the pieces along to other players to study. The directions say to not open any of the clue packages prior to solving the mystery. However, in both of our two game attempts, we believe that opening the packages would in no way compromise your ability to solve or not solve the mystery. You wouldn't know how the pieces would be used simply by opening the package. And the benefit, we feel, of opening the package beforehand would be to make copies of the pieces. That way, the pieces would be more easily shared in a group setting.
Great puzzles but defective "decoder"

I really wanted to like this game, as most of the puzzles are good (and several are truly excellent) but unfortunately the electronic part of the game rarely worked at all. Each scenario requires figuring out 3 codes in order. You proceed to the second and third parts of the scenario by putting plastic keys for each code into an electronic "decoder" that will buzz if you're wrong and chime if you're right.
But what happens when the cheap plastic electronic decoder goes on the fritz? You get a ruined game and a ton of frustration. I tried all three of the scenarios in this box and only once did the electronic decoder actually work and chime when I had the right codes. In the other two scenarios it repeatedly buzzed wrong answers over and over, to the point that I even confirmed my answers (via the website's downloadable walkthrough/solution guide). Even putting in the right keys, the box still rejected my answer each time for two of the scenarios.
Thankfully, the one time the box worked was with the best scenario of the three--The Dentist--which has some truly great puzzles and presents a solid but solvable challenge. But the other two games were far more frustrating because of the defective box. For what it's worth, if the box were to work correctly, I would have rated the puzzles in the Secret Agent as a 5 out of 10, Space Station a 7 out of 10 and the Dentist as a 9 out of 10, in terms of originality, logic, and overall fun. With the defective decoder, though, the game is truly unplayable without consulting the online solution manual which ruins the entire experience as you once you check the guide you know the answer even if you didn't get it right the first time.
Overall, I had to return to Amazon for a refund. The game simply did not work most of the time. A real shame.
Tedious escape--would rather be stuck in the room.

I'd played the Unlock games and the Exit games before this. Escape Room the Game relies heavily on this thing they call a Chrono Decoder, which is a plastic box that you slot keys into. The correct 4-key combination will tell the Decoder whether you solved your puzzles correctly. While counting down your allotted hour, the machine makes distracting ambiance noises that you can't turn off--so we ended up throwing the machine under a pillow and pulling it out only when we needed it. We've so far played the Prison Break and Virus rooms, and each time I played it with a different group, but we still felt underwhelmed. The logic in the puzzles is sometimes a stretch, and they're either (a) too challenging because they don't make sense or (b) not challenging enough. Solutions also tend to rely on decryption, ciphers, and math, all of which are tedious and time consuming (no wonder these games take an hour!). I wish there were more visual challenges, like "Find this number hidden in the room" or "If you look at this differently, you might find..."
I love that THRILL I get when I solve a creative puzzle that made me work hard, but not so hard that I got "pangry" (puzzled and angry). I don't get that kind of payoff with this game. Instead, I just feel a vague sense of dissatisfaction... as did all of my friends!
Just quit playing the 2nd game due to broken box.

My family and I were playing the Virus game - after already playing the Prison Break intro game - and the Chrono box is not recognizing the correct set of keys. AGAIN!
Very frustrating that we wasted 10 minutes with the first game (and "didn't win" even though the walkthrough later revealed that we did everything correctly)., and just now (at 8:45PM on July 20th) - on the first set of keys for the Virus game - it is telling us we are wrong and deducting 1 minute of time each time we try the correct answer... even though the note and cipher clearly state the correct code to use. (Yes, I consulted the online walkthrough and confirmed, yet again!, that the box is buzzing a correct answer as wrong.)
We checked the FAQ that said we should change the batteries if it is not reading the correct combination of keys. We previously used a fresh set of batteries, but changed them out anyway for brand new batteries. BUZZ!!!!
Very frustrating, and we'd like a replacement box sent to our address or a full refund.
UPDATE 12/14/2017 - almost 5 months later!
It has now been almost 5 months since I contacted customer service the first time. I followed up by email one month later and by telephone another month after that - each time, I was assured that a new "chrono-decoder" would be sent out to me. The first contact said, "as soon as more come in-stock"; the second time, on the phone, I was told "you should have already received one. We have replacements now. I'll get that sent out to you right away."
Now, I'm done, and the rating is dropping to 1 star, due to INCREDIBLY horrible customer service. (It's one thing to have a defective product - accidents happen. It's another to promise - REPEATEDLY - to make good, and fail!)
Never again - I'll stick to the Exit series of escape room games, and I'm never buying a Spin Master game again. Boardgamegeek.com will be receiving a similar review.
If you enjoy escape rooms you will LOVE it.

I was super nervous about this but decided to buy it and I am so glad I did. Who knew they really could give you an escape room experience in a box. You should be aware that each time you put in the wrong code one minute is deducted from your time! Yikes! The tension is real, the clues are great and you really do have to work for it. We had a group of 6 ages ranging from 11-40+ and we divided and conquered the clues based on our strengths. Each escape game has 3 stages of clues. You open an envelope that gives you the clues (maps, puzzles, etc.) and there are hint cards just like you would get hints at the physical room. Once you solve that set of clues you move to the next one. We failed the first time. If you don't get it in 60 minutes you can either keep going (the clock starts counting up) OR you can wait, and try again another day. We waited. It took two attempts for us and we skated it in in the final seconds of the second try. Everyone had fun, we all worked together. You do have to commit to not cheating (i.e. don't access the clues too soon). But it works. The pieces and clues can be restocked by downloading them online when you are done in case you want to let it cool off and then do it again sometime in the future.
Good Idea marred by faulty electronics and horrible customer service

The puzzles and design are fine and would warrant at least four stars on their own, but the "Chrono Decoder" which came with the game (and which is needed to check your progress through the rooms) failed on the very first room we played. It refused our input of the correct answer multiple times and when I contacted the SpinMaster customer service line, they responded by telling me I should check to make the that the batterie were fresh. (They were.) When I eventually took the time to sit on hold for over half an hour to reach an actual person, I was informed that, because I had purchased the game over 90 days ago, they couldn't do anything for me. (I wasn't calling to try to get a replacement, I wanted to find out what had caused the glitch in the first place and what I could do to prevent it from happening again on the other three games.)
All of which makes me very sad, because the idea behind the game and the design of both the clues and the puzzles in the first game we tried to play through were very good. It would have made for an excellent game (even if it could only be played four times.) But now I just need to dump it and take a loss on the time and money I've spent on trying to play it more than once.

My family enjoys live escape rooms so I thought this would be great for us (and we usually get out of rooms with a 30-40% pass rate). Typically the ages on games run on the high end so I assumed that this one would be good for us to do with our 8yr olds and 11 yr old with parental help. I was completely wrong. I'm not sure my husband and I would've gotten some of the clues figured out in the first game without every hint given. We found some of the materials to be printed very small and difficult to read. You definitely need readers and a very brightly lighted room to not shadow everything you're reading. The kids finally gave up and went to do something else. I'd say for the money, the live rooms are much better especially since these can only be done once. There is something about the 3D experience that allows you to work through problems and everyone can be working on a different problem. We just put it up until they're way older or we'll pass it on to someone else.
