Original Review:
Simple to use right out of the box, and the app is not necessary if you're satisfied with keeping tea warm at the default 130F, as we were. Keeps a charge for about 90 minutes before needing to go back on the charging plate; battery life seems shorter than it should for a product in 2017, but it was working fine for a cup of tea.
BUT - the jury is out right now on whether we will continue to use, as the interior of the mug began to delaminate after 8 days of use. The delamination is occurring in small, flaking-off spots, right in the curve where the interior base meets the interior wall (photo attached - blow it up to see the areas to the left of the original delamination spot, where cracking is just starting). No utensils, metal or otherwise, have been used on the interior, and it's been hand washed / rinsed only.
Have just sent an email to Ember and will update this review and rating as events progress.
UPDATE - 1/7/18: Customer service contacted me via email (and in the Comments section here) immediately after I posted this review, promising an immediate shipment of a replacement mug. After a little over a week, and having received no replacement or shipping info, I checked back and was told the shipment had not occurred due to an internal snafu. Customer service was again apologetic, and shipped one out overnight. We're now in about Day 3 of using the new mug, and everything seems to be working as intended, but waiting to see if we have the same issue as before (a couple commenters to this review also noted the same problem) - leaving the original 2-star rating for now, but props to Customer Service for being responsive, even with a snafu. Will post another update in a month or so.
UPDATE - 2/11/18: It's been a month of constant use, multiple times per day, for hot tea (and not using any metal utensils). Haven't had another delamination issue, although there are two tiny spots in the base curve I'm keeping an eye on. I've raised my original two-star review to four stars, as Mom loves the mug and finds that it's perfect for her use. Will only update from here if we have another issue.
UPDATE & FINAL - 3/15/18: Delamination spots appeared again as of 2/23/18. This replacement made it just over a month. Back to two stars, as it's a great idea when it works, but the quality is not there for regular use.

I bought this mug for my wife as she is always heating up her coffee in the microwave. she loves her new mug but unfortunately it started peeling inside like the photos in other reviews. I bought this mug back in May...Not Good....I hope they replace it for free...I will be calling Customer Service. Ember definitely needs to address this issue.

Update: Between the two mugs I bought, I've now gone through four replacements, with the latest one just dying this morning. I think I'm going to call it here and give up. It's a cool idea, but their priorities have very obviously shifted away from hardware and towards gathering and selling customer data (as indicated by the requirement to create an account).
I've purchased two of these now, one as a gift. In four months I've experienced pretty much every problem people mention in the reviews. Flaking paint, spontaneously dying components, a stuck pin on the charger. To their credit, the company has been pretty good about replacing stuff...but, you know.

I bought this as a gift for mom, fully aware of all the other comments. She never used a metal spoon and only washed and dried using a soft cloth from day one. Yet within a month, the interior coating began to flake where the side met the bottom. Customer service replaced it no problem, but we made the mistake of sending in the original box and did not get one in return - just a plain brown shipping box.
She loves having hot tea from start to finish, but wishes the mug capacity was larger. I would get one for myself but not until it holds more! She doesn't have a smart phone but got the app on her iPad, so she customized the temperature to 142F.
Four months from purchase, the spring on one of the charging pins failed, so it would no longer charge. Customer service replaced the base - we only had to send in a picture.
I/we want to give this 5 stars (and we do give customer service 5 stars), but the continual problems are a concern and bit of bother.

I bought this mug a month ago and it has worked pretty much as expected. Keeps coffee steaming hot for a decent amount of time. However, after only a month the inner coating on the base of the mug has already started bubbling and chipping off (see photos below). I am always careful when washing the mug, never use anything abrasive, have never stirred my drink with a spoon. I am pretty concerned about how long this is going to last, given that this has already started after only a month of very gentle use. I am giving this 3 stars as a compromise between how well the mug functions, but how quickly the materials have worn. I will reach out to the manufacturer and hopefully get a satisfactory response. UPDATE: Customer service contacted me very quickly and offered to send a pre-paid shipping label for me to return the cup. I assume they are sending me a new one (thought their email to me was vague on that point). UPDATE 2: received a new mug quickly and mailed back the old one. So far so good. UPDATE 3: well the interior is chipping again. I was super careful in hand washing and it started chipping again in the exact same place. Also, now the base appears to be broken and one of the metal contacts is stuck down and the mug won't charge. I'm lowering my rating to 2 stars. Love the concept but too many problems for the price.

I would rate this product zero stars. It worked great for a while but then the spring creating tension for the electrical prong broke and now the cup can't be charged, rendering it useless. In additional, the enamel is starting to chip off on the inside bottom. Scary. I cannot return the product for a refund because of Amazon's time constraints, too much time has passed since I bought it, two months ago, although the prong actually broke after about six weeks. A real tragedy, great when it worked, but obviously quality control is nonexistent at the manufacturing facility. Buyer beware.
Ember app doesn't work

I bought an Ember cup two years ago and had no problem pairing the cup to my LG smartphone. I've just purchased 2 more and I am very dissatisfied. These cups will not pair with my phone. I went thru all the steps: reset Blue Tooth, reset the Ember cup, deleted and reinstalled the Ember app and nothing will work. I've read multiple reviews and the complaints are all the same, the customer can't get the cup to pair with their phone. What I read in one of the factory responses was that the initial app was having problems with the Android operating system, so Ember altered the app and now it is incompatible with my phone(LGL56VL). I'm returning the cups and I am also disappointed in Amazon. I spend thousands of dollars a year at Amazon and I depend on their knowledge of the products they sell. Amazon, why don't you have a disclaimer saying the Ember app in incompatible with with some Android devices. And without the app you can't adjust the temperature and the factory setting of 130 degrees just isn't hot enough. Guess I'll have to look elsewhere than Amazon for electronics.

I loved the simplicity and compactness of the packaging. My ember mug arrived in perfect condition. Be sure to charge up your mug before you use it! After charging, downloading the ember app was a breeze and the mug paired easily with my iPhone (be sure to hold the power button down for 5 seconds and have your phone's bluetooth on and discoverable). I was quite surprised by the range of connectivity my phone maintained with the mug- I could be in a separate room with my phone without affecting the mugs ability to maintain temperature! My favorite feature is how the ember app notifies you when your coffee is at your perfect temperature. The app also has some awesome preset temps to choose from (I.e. coffee, tea, latte, etc.). Although the battery doesn't last for hours, the battery has more than enough energy capacity for your morning coffee or tea rituals. From personal experience, heating my coffee or tea for more than 30 minutes changes the flavor for the worst, as it starts to taste burned. Be mindful that this is an open mug and not a travel mug. The rate of heat loss will be much faster without a lid and heat maintenance will require much more energy and battery. If you're looking for longer maintenance of your hot beverage, I would recommend purchasing the travel mug! Overall, I am suuuuper happy with my ember purchase!

Wow, to spend so much for a coffee cup to have it delaminate/chip on the inside bottom after only 4 months. Really disappointing.

Does not hold a charge long enough. Very disappointed. I drink Coffee throughout the morning. With Ember, it loses the charge and has to be recharged too many times to meet my needs. For $10 the Mr Coffee Mug Warmer is a MUCH better product. Also, my non-powered YETI mug lasts WAAAAAY longer! Frankly, I wasted $79 on a "gadget" that sounded "cooler" than it really is.
