Not enough functionality

The sound is great but you can really only listen to Amazon music. I wanted to connect to Bluetooth devices but the audio only comes out of one of the echos.

Also when not listening to music the echos aren't synced up. Sometimes one echo responds, sometimes both but one slightly delayed from the other.

Amazon never responded to my feedback/concerns. I'm pretty disappointed and will be returning.

Easy to connect and sounds great

It sounds great even though it's smaller than I thought it would be.

Some people have noticed it doesn't connect to a network of Echo devices. All you have to do is delete the network, sync to a single device, then re-create the network with that device in it ..... poof, works.

These things suck!
by Pete from CT (1 out of 5 stars)
December 19, 2018

Amazon totally dropped the ball with these. The speakers are impossible to pair, and when they finally do, they can't sync up at the same time, even when in the same room. Furthermore, not being able to add your Echo first generation is annoying beyond belief. They can allow this, but don't. Now, I'm having the issue where one of my new echos won't even play at all. What a disaster these things are! The real issue, here, is the software. That would be such an easy fix, but it's been two months, and Amazon doesn't seem to want to fix it. And why can't you control the bass level coming from the sub? Ridiculous.

You need 2 Echos

We quickly became Amazon gadget junkies so we were really excited for a subwoofer to be released. We were really disappointed though that we needed to have to Echo (2nd gen) devices. The Show will not work. The Spot will not work. Obviously Echo Dot won't work. We were faced with the decision to either return it or buy another Echo (2nd gen) device because it wouldn't connect to the Show. So....we bought another one instead of returning the Sub. It sounds great, but it turned into a bigger investment than we thought it was going to be so that was disappointing. Another disappointing fact is that it only works with streaming music. Don't bother to try to make it work with your smart TV. Now we have really great sounding music, the same ol' TV sound and too many Amazon devices and too little money.

Great sound but don't plan on using Aux Line Input for 2.1 from your TV
by Travis in NC (3 out of 5 stars)
October 14, 2018

I bought this under the assumption that I could tap audio output from TV to the left or right channel, then propagate that across the 2.1 combination of Echo Plus, Echo Plus, and Echo Sub. It does not work that way. You will only get sound to one of the Echo Plus speakers. Suppose you could split it and have audio to both Echo Plus' but unless you have the correct cables you will get dual mono. And the sub does not connect through line-in. This should have been clarified in the marketing / description.

Also, if you still want to buy and use this for input, be sure to go into the Alexa app and select "Input" instead of output to speaker in the Aux Line connection setting.

Connection issues
by M. Merritt (1 out of 5 stars)
October 16, 2018

Our current Echo Plus, the older version, has no connectivity issues. However, this new stereo pair and subwoofer had multiple issues maintaining connection to our wifi system. Tried different channels and wifi selections such as 2.4 or 5 ghz and no luck. Music would stop streaming constantly, and suddenly resume, or remain faint as almost muted. Returned the system for a refund, but I'm glad to see so many others have had success with the system for I had high hopes. I'd say it was our network, but the moment I reinstalled the old echo plus it's worked fine every day without any loss of streaming etc.

Works But Below Expectation
by Kindle Customer (2 out of 5 stars)

I'm an Echo fan with 8 devices in the house including 3 Dots and 5 Echo gen 2; however, the sub comes up short on performance for several reasons:

Bass is too week to fill the room - We have subwoofers in three other rooms and placement is not critical and they're place in the most convenient location. The Echo Sub is so weak it wouldn't fill the room and I had to place near one of the Echo's to get any real sensation of bass.

Sounds disconnected from the music in the Echos - I'm running a stereo set of Echo generation two's and the sub doesn't sound natural with the main music coming through the stereo Echos. More like my three year old granddaughters are play a toy bass drum while I'm trying to listen to music.

Bass response is too limited - Not nearly as good as smaller subs that are slaved to TV soundbars. These sound like the cheap speakers you get when they come with a computer bundle.

Hope Amazon has some firmware fixes that will make these a bit better; otherwise, wait for the next generation.

Sad the sub doesn't perform better as I looked forward to the addition and I'm very pleased with the other Echo products.

Pretty good but could be better

I have had my Echo sub for a little over a week now and I must say, I like it a lot. I have a total of 4 Alexa devices (5 counting the sub) in my house and I've always thought that the music was lacking a little omph. I paired the sub with the Alexa that we use the most and setup only took about 5 minutes and was pretty seamless. The sub and the Echo that it is paired with are about 15 feet apart. Now my music has more of that bottom end that I have been missing and the sound actually fills the room much better. I have noticed that when speaking to Alexa with the music playing will sometimes cause the sub to stop until the next song but not always. As another reviewer noted, the sub only functions with music. Ask Alexa a question or have her do a task and no sub. Also, I added the sub to my music group and it will play with all of the Echos in the group. One reviewer said that their Echo sub would not play with their music group but, they also noted that they got a sub and two Echos to have stereo. I only have my sub paired with one Echo. Maybe that is the difference in having the sub function as part of a group.

Overall I think that the sub is a great addition and, if they change the functionality so that it works all the time, I would give it 5 stars.

5 Stars for excellent stereo sound
by Steve Pugliese (5 out of 5 stars)

Got this with the two 2nd Gen Echos plus the sub for $250, which is a very good deal, I think. Actually, the two Echos arrived a couple of days before the Sub so I got to listen to them for two days by themselves paired in stereo. I was quite surprised how good they sounded. And there was something I haven't heard in awhile, stereo. I've been on single Bluetooth speakers for sometime now in my apartment. There's a very decent stereo image here and a very nice, wide stage effect with the paired Echos on my mantle with about six feet between them. A reviewer on You Tube had said there was virtually no stereo image due to the 360 degree nature of the sound from the Echos, but I feel he's wrong. The image is definitely there. And it's much wider than my Marshall Stanmore speaker. Although the Stanmore has more punch and definitely gets much louder (it's a better speaker but doesn't sound a whole lot better than this system), it does not sound stereo nor is its sound stage very wide. That, ultimately is what is selling me on these things. That and that they sound pretty darn good. Two Echos definitely sound better than one and when stereo paired they are quite exceptional. They even have decent bass and get very loud. I bet if you changed them to the Echo Plus's you could be quite happy with them by themselves.

Which brings me to the Echo Sub (at last). First, let me say that coupled with the two Echos in stereo, it sounds terrific. The Sub also surprised me in that its effect is rather subdued. It adds the base when it needs to and you can certainly tell the difference between playing the stereo Echos by themselves and with the Sub. But it isn't in your face at all. It's quite nice. I especially like it with classical music. But I do find I have to turn up the base for classical and turn it down for rock. But it sounds very good. I had expected to be somehow disappointed with this system but it turns out it sounds excellent and has that peerless stereo stage. And you get Alexa. All for $250. You simply cannot find another Bluetooth system like this for anywhere near that price. I'm sure two Apple Home Pods paired in stereo would sound better than this. But that will cost you $700 to find out. I haven't heard enough of the Home Pod to know, but I'm guessing these will be competition against one Home Pod at $350.

Which brings me to the final issue. I'm guessing the system with two 2nd Gen Echo Plus's sounds even better than this. Might well be worth the extra eighty bucks. That would still be cheaper than the Home Pod or the Google Home Max. I wish I knew if it makes that much of a difference but I can't help believing it does. But I think I'm going to have to keep these. They sound really great and eighty bills are eighty bills and it's likely not a radical difference.

Now, about all those setup problems. I made the mistake of trying to hook up the Sub while the two Echos were in a stereo pair. It took me awhile to figure out that I had to unpair the Echos first. The only way I could figure out how to do that was to deregister both Echos and pull their plugs. That forces a do-over. Then I set up each Echo as a single unit. That's pretty straightforward in the Alexa app, I think. When you plug the deregistered Echos back in, they go into setup mode with the orange ring automatically. So does the Sub (it has a little lighted button). But you need to set up the Echos first (just don't pair them for stereo) and then set up the Sub. After the Sub is set up, it should automatically go into the stereo pairing mode. You select the set that consists of each Echo and the Sub. After that you're good to go. If you're having problems, try deregistering everything and starting over as described above.

So this system sounds quite fine. I'm impressed. They are a keeper. Now, what to do with the Stanmore? The only thing I don't like is that when you say, "Alexa, next," she shuts down or lower for a few moments but then it comes back with a snippet of the last selection before it goes to the next one. That didn't use to happen. It's a bit annoying. But relatively minor. I too hope they eventually allow for Bluetooth coupling, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

Oh, one more thing. These new Echos are surprisingly good at hearing you. With classical music, they hear you virtually every time, even at high volumes. With rock music at higher volumes you have to speak up, maybe even shout. At full volume these get very loud but do not distort. Very nice, but if you have neighbors, you won't be playing these much above 7! Thanks for reading.
