Product Description
With the unique Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker, you can make ice cream while on camping trips, at picnics, barbecues, and many other places. You don't need electricity to make great tasting ice cream, but rather just add ice and rock salt in one end and ice cream mix in the other end. Then, have a ball as you shake it, pass it, or roll it around for 10 to 15 minutes. The ice cream mix can be as simple as cream, sugar, and vanilla or you can try a more adventurous flavor from the included recipe list or make up your own concoction. Made of durable advanced materials, the Ice Cream Ball is lightweight, portable, and easy to clean.
Step 1, fill with ice. | Step 2, mix up ingredients. |
Step 3, shake it up. | Step 4, enjoy. |
- Fill the ice end with as much ice as possible, then add 1/2 cup of rock salt to the pint size or 3/4 cup to the Mega size. The lid should be hand tightened--do not use the wrench.
- Mix up your ice cream ingredients in a container, then pour the mix into the end with the metal cylinder, leaving about one inch for expansion at the top. Hand tighten the lid.
- Have a ball! Shake, roll, and pass it around as you mix and freeze the ingredients. It's not necessary to shake the ball...just motion will do it.
- After about 10 minutes for the pint size and 15 minutes for the Mega ball, open the ice cream end using the included plastic wrench. Scrape the sides of the cylinder to mix up the ice cream using a plastic or wooden spoon (don't use a metal spoon as it will scratch the cylinder). Then check the ice end. Pour out the excess water and add more ice and up to 1/3 cup more rock salt to enhance the freezing ability. Close the lids securely and continue having a ball for approximately 5 to 10 more minutes (15 for the Mega).
- You will then have about a pint (or quart for the Mega ball) of delicious soft-serve ice cream. The consistency will vary based on the ice, your mix, the outside temperature, shaking frequency, etc. Once the ice cream is to the consistency of your liking, gently scoop it out and enjoy!
Important tips for using your Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker:
- Directions and recipes are inside the Ball.
- Use cream instead of half and half for richer tasting ice cream.
- Leave about an inch of space for expansion when you fill up the can with the ice cream mix.
- After 10 minutes (15 for Mega ball) of mixing (shaking, rolling, and passing), it is important to stir the ice cream mix (it freezes more around the can). Also, drain the water and refill with ice and additional rock salt. Have fun for another 10 to 15 minutes and you're done.
- Use the provided plastic wrench to open the ball, but not to close it.

I decide to buy this mega ball ice cream maker, I read all the good and bad reviews. I might add, a lot of the bad review r older post and I am guessing might be about the pint size ball ( I did keep that in mind, and hoped the maker of this product corrected the issues). In the mega ball there is a nice very wide opening at both ends, and I did not have to crush/smash my ice ( which I just took out of my ice maker), I used salt rocks for the water softener system we have, and I mixed 1cup heavy cream with 2-3 cup 1/2 and 1/2 ( it took about 45min to make a very nice soft serve ice cream). me and my 2, 4, 6 year old girls had fun to the very end. My 4 yr old has low muscle tone and it was a nice PT work out for her ( she would sit and rolled it to me, and use the bottom of her feet to do a kick / push like movement with the ball). I did not over tighten the lids ( just as soon as I felt them get a nice grip closure I stopped) and found it easy to open, and there was no leaks. I did notice when I opened the ice cream end to mix, I heard the sound of a pressure release, ( vacuum pressure will happen because of the cold and warm air) so I am putting 2 and 2 together, that if u over tighten the lids a very strong vacuum will form, an not allow the lid to release. The mega ( 1 qt) ball feed 3 kids and 2 adults very nice large servings. Yes it is heavy, and it is a hard plastic, but we still had a very fun time with it. I am off to make more now, I will do up dates if I notice any new things that might make a good tip to know.
in 4 days we made 1 gal of ice cream ( we shared and made some for family). We made mint chocolate chip, chocolate, strawberry, and keylime pie ( all very good). The strawberry and key lime pie, we made back to back and had no issues and used a total of 1/2 of the ice makers tray. The kids had a great time, when they took a break from playing, my husband just rocked it with one hand, and on the 2nd one I just rocked it with my foot after it was rocked by my husband, by now the kids where off and into something new. I find no need to drain the water and add more salt, but I do add ice when I think it needs it ( and that has been once each time I make a batch). average time using the above mix about 40mins, oh, the strawberry had about 1 cup whole milk, 2 cups 1/2 and 1/2, and 1 cup heavy cream ( and it came very close to a hard ice cream) ( do not know why, but maybe we had more salt rocks, for I just let the kids have fun adding the salt without measuring it). I also save what ever salt is left in the ice bath, and reuse it for the next batch. I really like that u can make a batch up and have no leftovers calling your name in the middle of the night ;) , the strawberry was eaten by 5 kids,6,5,4,3,2, and 2 adults ( small servings, but it took care of the sweet tooth). I might add, it melts very fast, so we put ours in cups, works much better then blows for drinking the melted portion of the ice cream.
con: make sure little ones use the palm of their hands and bottom of their feet when rolling the ball ( for the ball has areas that a finger can get catch in and bend them ( it happened to me and my 6 yr old), and have them keep their hands off the floor, for the ball is hard plastic and will hurt, if their fingers get rolled over ( it happened to me and 2 of my girls). But this has not stopped them ( us) from playing and making ice cream, we just have learned what not to do....
Really Fun and Easy

I bought this ball and thought it was absolutely fantastic. Ice and salt around the outside, cream, sugar, and vanilla in the metal canister inside. Very simple and easy. My friends and I had a ton of fun rolling it around on the floor and outside on the grass. After 10 minutes, we opened the canister and mixed up the ice cream use a metal spatula, which was perfect thanks to it being flexible and hard. 10 more minutes of rolling and tossing, and we mixed it up again (it does make a little mess, but if you're careful and have some paper towel around, it's not bad at all), and added some more ice and salt just for kicks (the salt lowers the freezing point of the ice, so even if there's a mix of ice and water in the ball, it's still colder than the frozen ice). Final 10 minute segment of rolling and shaking and we got perfect ice cream. Harder around the edges and more soft-serve style in the middle, we didn't have any soupy cream left over, only delicious ice cream. Plus, the quart-size ball made enough ice cream for 8 people to get decent-sized scoops with their apple pie. I'm really looking forward to using this ball again.
Broke first time

We are always very careful with our things, read the instructions, etc. This, however, was a huge waste of money. It broke beyond repair the first time we used it - we were rolling it back and forth on a very soft rug, my daughter picked it up and since it is quite heavy, she dropped it about 2 inches onto the padded rug. It broke almost in half.
That combined with the fact that scraping the ice cream down in the middle of the process is extremely messy makes me give this only 2 stars. You can do better with a small coffee can for the ingredients inside a larger coffee can for the ice/salt.
Fun and Relatively Easy!

My friends and I had been joking about getting one of these for a while, and I finally bought the bullet.
I wasn't sure if I'd actually use it, if it would make enough ice cream, or what the deal was. The instructions are pretty straightforward, so I got to mixing my ingredients, dumping in the ice and salt and was ready to party. I didn't think it would be a good idea to physically throw the ball around, since it was heavy and I didn't want someone to drop and break it. Instead, I rolled it around on the living room floor while watching tv. Pretty wonderful lazy way to make ice cream! My only complaint was at the end, it was nearly impossible to get the lid ends off. I ended up using a small hammer to get the thing open.
Other than that, it's a pretty cool gadget. Added bonus - it looks like a hamster wheel, but instead of little pellets of hamster poo inside, you have delicious ice cream.
Yes, it works fine

We bought two quart ones for our kids, and have only had to use one. Is just as described. We did have some slight leakage at first, but I think it was from overfilling. After tightening, it was fine. We bought the recommended flavor syrups, and the kids just love it. In 20 minutes we have ice cream. We have only used it inside so far, and it is a hit. The quart one will feed around 4 people....in hindsight, would have bought 1 quart, not 2, but may give the other one as a gift. Highly recommend.

The ice cream ball does exactly what it advertises. Put in the ingredients, roll it around for a half hour adding ice once and out come homemade ice cream. Now the part we didn't get was don't kick this ball with your toes. I thought my 12 year old daughter broke her toe kicking this thing with all her might. It definitely is more of a soccer, side of your foot, push the ball around instead of kicking it. We also bought the inflatable cover which helped but it still was not something you wanted to run at and power kick.
Buying another - wore the 1st one out

We bought one for my brother for Christmas a few years back and my stepmother ended up buying them for the entire family. It does seem to take longer to get a harder ice cream than predicted in the instructions, but you will eventually get it.
The great thing about this is that you can create your ice cream to your specific tastes or even sugar free. And you can shake it up until you receive your desired consistency as well, depending on if you like a soft serve or a hard scoop.
We have a family camping trip every year and we all pack them and make different flavors to share and we have a blast with throwing them around and playing games to pass the time.
I have never had it seal shut, nor drip everywhere or any of the other complaints I have read here for this item. It cleans and stores well and I am buying my 2nd one to replace the 1st that we wore out and then dropped accidentally for the 16th time finally cracking the ball. But it is tougher than you might think and has survived some serious tumbles and even survived a kick into a tree :)
Don't toss, kick or throw!

I was a little surprised at the warning when I first read the instructions, but once you fill the MEGA ball with Ice you really won't want to toss, kick or throw this thing anyway. It's 9lbs when filled. Plus the plastic is hard and I imagine would crack of you drop it on another hard surface, or worse it would crack bones in your foot if it landed on it. Even so it was great fun passing and shaking the ball. We used the Strawberry Rival ice cream mix packet along with a mixture of heavy cream, half and half and milk. YUMMY. Took 30 minutes total to freeze. I would recommend the smaller ball for smaller children to help with, even though that is 7lbs filled - still a bit heavy.
Why are they still selling this item?

For one thing, you may as well buy the amount/size of ice you need to go into this ball. As I was pouring the salt into the bottom half, some got along the edge and proved very difficult to remove the twist cap to correct the problem, so there was a lot of leaking until I managed to pry it off. Also note that when it does freeze from the inside, it's going to be difficult to unscrew the end where you poured the salt and ice mix, not to mention the ice cream end. They make it sound so easy to simply open the ice cream end in the middle of the freezing process and it was impossible. I couldn't even refill it with ice because that part was frozen as well. I thought it would be fun for my niece to play with, and she does in fact love the ball itself, but we never have enough ice to fill that thing up to get the ice cream to freeze properly. I ignored these reviews before, but I wish I hadn't. The ice has to be a certain size to even fit into the other part of the container as well, or be prepared to use an ice pick. It's just too much trouble when all you have to do is either use a better machine that will more than likely cost the same or just go out and buy a good pint of ice cream. You won't be saving much money using this thing, that's for sure.
Nice concept but requires patience

Makes ice cream but it's fairly tedious. Moreover, cream along the edges of the freeze canister freezes much more quickly (ok, that makes sense). Learned through experience that every few minutes you need to take a rubber spatula to it to mix things up. Otherwise the edges are hard and the middle is like milk. Scrape it and mix it up and it's more consistent in texture and frozen-ness.
