Coleman Camp Oven - WORKS! handy cheap & versatileby Archie Md (5 out of 5 stars)

Really a 4.75 rating but...
The folding portable Coleman Camp Oven exceeded my expectations, while confirming the positive reviews here.
Assembly is very easy, just get the tabs and slots aligned correctly. Minor quibble with the wire rack, a bit too loose to my thinking. Secured it by pushing the sides around the slot inboard enough to pass a small paperclip U through the punched sheet metal loop. Two at opposite corners locked the whole unit together securely. Works, but a more elegant solution to follow.
The red plastic door latch knob doesn't have an indicator for locked/unlocked position...can be improved by painting a thick stripe to indicate position. The idents in the door may not project enough on some units to hold the latching bar. I plan to add a small sheet metal angle with pop rivets for more positive stops in either position. Out of the box, it works but is annoying when one is about to remove items.
Others have already mentioned the wire carry handle and offered various work arounds. I used a old broom handle cutoff with groove cut on table saw and expoxied.
Cooking
Tested on range top because of cold wet weather. Considering previous comments I tried a large ceramic floor tile on the floor of the oven...to big to allow airflow and too thin, less than 1/4" to act as thermal bank. Tried my Lodge round cast iron trivet which has a number of round holes, since it was something I already take on outdoor trips. Works reasonably well so far. More happy with it that dragging a heavy pizza stone around. RVers might not be concerned by the stone.
Biscuits, cinnamon rolls, small pizzas all came out well after a few tries with adjusting gas heat source. Just as with built in ovens a thermamator is essential. Largest item so far has been a 3lb meatloaf baked in square heavy ga. steel pan. Came out great, nice and juicy with a bit of crust.
A grill mat cut to size works very well to warm up buns, rolls and such. Seems to give more uniform heating without dropping crumbs to oven base. Excellent for roasting veggies. A quick tortilla snack with melted cheese and pepperoni and onions on the grill mat turned out with a nice crisp crust. Melted cheese runoff came up with the tortilla, leaving no mess.
Can't wait to try it out on first camping trip.
This folding oven is really quite amazing considering the cheap price, a real bargain.
Great little oven for camping

For the price, size and weight of this, it does an amazing job. For our first use we bought a Betty Crocker chocolate chunk cookie mix and a small disposable fudge pan. I put 2 ceramic bread warmers in the bottom of the oven to help distribute the heat evenly. It took about 5 minutes to get up to 300, then I lowered the heat on the stove and it got to about 340 and stayed there pretty well without further adjustment. The cookie bars were done in 20 minutes and came out perfectly.

This is an absolutely fabulous camp oven. I was doubtful that it could do a decent job for only $27. It's great! It heats up very nicely, in fact I had a little difficulty running it in the 250 degree range as it wanted to shoot up to 350 or more, at least with my camp stove. I purchased a heat diffuser and placed it over the burner for better control. Like others said, the thermometer in the door registers lower than the actual temp in the oven, about 50 degrees lower on mine. Once you know that, it's not a problem. We were thinking of getting one of those camp stove/oven combos for considerably more and with a lot more storage space taken up. Very glad we didn't. Because I can't manage to leave well enough alone I also got a 9"x9" ceramic tile to put in the bottom of the oven to create more even heat, as well as being a heat sync to make the up and down temperature fluctuations from cooking outdoors more uniform.

I have seen these ovens on store shelves most of my life. I was certain that a little aluminum box could not function as an oven. But recently, we were embarking on a 10-day camping trip, and I was going to need to bake while we were there. I am pretty adept at baking with coals from a campfire or a charcoal fire, but on the trip in question, there was a burn ban in effect. What to do? I got on Amazon and read reviews about the Coleman Camp Oven, and decided that if my original opinion was correct, Coleman wouldn't still be making this little gem.
I purchased the oven and it arrived when promised. We took it to the campground, and were totally amazed at how beautifully it worked. We baked brownies, biscuits, potatoes, cornbread and even gluten-free hamburger buns and rolls. Everything was wonderful. The oven was easy to set up and use. But it is not like baking at home in your regular oven.
Tips you should know:
> Only use the oven on a camp stove. Try to get your stove as level as possible.
> Start warming it up with a low flame, and increase the stove flame as the oven begins to pre-heat.
> Plan to use small bakeware. Coleman suggests 8x8 pans. Here are some products that we found worked well:
* Nordic Ware Toaster Oven Baking Sheet
* Ekco mini muffin pan for 12 muffins
* Fox Run Set of Four English Muffin Rings (for the burger buns) on the baking sheet
* MSR Blacklite Fry Pan
* 8x8 foil pan
> After your food is in the oven, you really need to watch the temperature gauge from time to time. The longer it bakes, the more likely you will need to adjust the stove flame to regulate the temperature inside the oven. This is NOT set-it-and-forget-it baking.
> We found that timing was pretty close to baking at home, as long as the temperature was constant.
> Try not to peek too often. Peeking lowers the internal temperature. Look when you need to & that's all.
> Clean up spills (outside and inside) as soon as the oven cools. Don't let gunk bake on during the next use.
The oven folds up quickly when it is time to pack up. We keep it in its original box, and it is ready to go!
I still love the thrill of accomplishment of baking using a campfire, but this little oven is a great addition for those times when a fire is not convenient.
May we all have many years of excellent campground baking! Happy Camping! Happy Baking! Happy Eating!

I hadn't heard about this oven until finding it on Expedition Portal with glowing reviews. At $30 I gave it a shot and have used it for 3 camping weekends thus far. Holy moly, I can't figure out how we lived without it now. It is astonishing how much a pan of cinnamon rolls on a cold morning can change morale.
I use the oven on a Coleman Grill Stove Coleman PerfectFlow Insta Start Grill Stove
. The trick here is to remove the grill portion and just set the oven right over the burner, it prevents the grill from melting and doubles as a nice wind break on the burner. I have given up hope on the thermometer, so I typically just set a medium flame and monitor the contents until they're done.
The grate can be set at 3 heights. Higher is better in my opinion, helps prevent burned bottoms, which I've had a couple times. I'd also recommend a dedicated cookware set, I bought the Farberware set Farberware Nonstick Bakeware 4-Piece Toaster Oven Set, Gray
. Make sure you have a good oven mitt too so you can pull out hot pans.
I deducted a star because the details are lacking. As I said, the thermometer is way off, the washer behind the door knob has already fallen apart on me, and the latches to hold it together are really easy to bend. This isn't a new product, so I'd like to see Coleman up the quality a bit, maybe bump the price $5 or so, and call it good.
It packs small enough that it's always with us when car camping. With the latch issue mentioned above, I wouldn't be surprised if I break something over the summer of camping, but I'm sure I can kluge it together to keep it going for a while. Solid 4 stars and highly recommended for making happy campers.
A very nice addition to our campfire cooking experience

A very nice addition to our campfire cooking experience. Watch it closely over a campfire to maintain temp. We baked delicious brownies one night and fresh biscuits for sausage and gravy the next morning. Works well. Only wish is that I could get a larger one. 8" square pans work well, but 13x9 won't fit.

I love , Love , Love my stove! I purchased this because we live on a sailboat and I was really missing baking. I discovered and this and thought would give it try...I mean the price is right. I use it on my alcohol stove. It fits perfectly over one burner and holds heat well. I find using lowest flame setting will hold temp right around 350. I also added a 10 x 7 stone and it helps balance the heat as well. I have only used it a few times now but in a couple days we made muffins, baked zucchini, baked apples, sweet potato fries and I have bread in now. Loving it.
You can still suffer while camping AND have cinnamon rolls

What?? Cinnamon rolls while I'm camping? Tell me it isn't so! You're *supposed* to suffer while camping or you're simply not doing it right. That's the point, really. Camping is supposed to be torturous, cold, wet, and you live off cans of beans and whatever other food the chipmunks don't get to first.
Well, apparently you can have the wet and cold torture and still have delicious cinnamon rolls with your camp coffee. And pizza. And smoked sausage wrapped in little croissants. And coconut shrimp. And those delicious little Thai spring rolls. And brownies, cookies, and those Jiffy corn muffins from when you were a kid, with your canned chili of course.
My first batch of cinnamon rolls burned (now THAT'S real camping), but then I purchased this: Professional Grade Silicone Nonstick Baking Mat | Small Square Sheet Pan Size | Rolls Up For Easy Storage | Easy To Clean and this: HIC Heat Diffuser Reducer Flame Guard Simmer Plate, 8.25-Inches and my next batch were significantly improved.
If you can reconcile yourself to the hard truth that you are DEFINITELY towing the *glamping* line with this little gizmo, it will give you a reason to crawl out of your warm sleeping bag and out into the bitter cold of nature each morning. Plus, it's Coleman, and if that doesn't say "camping", I don't know what does.
Works as good as my home oven.

Had to tweak it. Put a 7.5 inch pizza stone I found on Amazon on the floor, which acts as a heat sink, and more evenly dissipates the heat. Made a cozy out of fire resistant non fiberglass insulation. Snaked my high end BBQ/Smoker temp probe down into slot on top to see what temps really are, and discovered the thermometer on the door was reading about 75 degrees lower than actual temp. But knowing what the temps actually were, I was able to bake up a tray of biscuits in the 18 to 20 min recipe called for and they were done to perfection. I had to preheat the oven for 20 min to get to the recommended 425 degrees. It was 40 degrees outside and a little breezy. Used my Coleman liquid fuel stove. With the cozy insulating the oven, I barely needed a flame to maintain 425 degrees once it preheated.
So Well Made and Practical

I was really impressed on how easy to set this up and well constructed. The oven is heavier than I thought but I am excited to try this new gadget during Thanksgiving.
After reading reviews I decided to get a pizza stone, an additional rack and a thermometer so I can warm multiple dishes at the same time.
The main reason why I wanted this oven is the challenge of warming food with just one burner for Thanksgiving meal. The oven will allow me to warm my feast timely.
Plus, it fits my coleman fold n go perfectly.
Update: This oven is amazing, I baked little cheese rolls and quickly got at the right temperature with my one burner grill. The thermometer on the door is not accurate, when it is cold outside.
I placed a cooking sheet on the top of a baking stone and the bottom did brown quicker than the top, do not over bake or it will burn.
Amazing product!!!
