I will admit that I have a problem, and the problem is that I love freeze dried ice cream to an unhealthy degree. I will also admit that I accidentally purchased these while drunk without realizing that they were sandwiches and not the classic plain ice cream version. Nevertheless, I enjoyed them thoroughly.

I have to dock one star though because the texture of the sandwich is wildly different from that of the ice cream - it's a lot more brittle, and a lot less soluble (in your mouth, duh!) making getting a cohesive bite of both cookie and ice cream very difficult without spraying crumbs literally EVERYWHERE like some kind of desserty frag grenade and which, I imagine, would be kind of a problem if we were in a zero gravity environment. Seriously I had to eat these all standing over the sink. Pretty tasty though.

These Ice Cream are old!

I was very very disappointed with the products. I ordered 10 to give to my grandkids for Christmas and when they opened it, it was so crumbled up but more importantly when they tasted it, they were very old! We ended up opening all 10 only to find out none of them were good. My grandkids started spitting them out and threw them all away . These Astronaut Ice Cream are very expensive too. What a waste of my money!

Strange but delightful

I use these for stocking stuffers, car trip snacks, and emergency bribes. Keep in mind that no matter where you buy astronaut ice cream, it will come not in a nice solid block, but pre-broken into little random bite-sized bits, and there will be powdery crumbs that your kids will spill somehow. This is the nature of the beast. It tastes exactly like Neapolitan ice cream, because that's what it is, only with all the moisture removed (be sure to have water on hand, or your dehydrated children will make you suffer). It is a weird, sweet, dry, creamy treat with an apocalypse-ready shelf life. What's not to love?

We love Astronaut Ice Cream but these were AWFUL. It's as if half of them were freeze dried melted or something because they were hard, gross, and just not worth buying even at half the price. We couldn't even get through eating one. So disappointed and bummed out.

I have purchased the mountain house brand of neapolitan ice cream many many times. Its a fantastic product, but then the price shot up and the astronaut brand was cheaper. (To put this into perspective, I have bought over 100 pouches of freeze dried ice cream products, so price and quality are very important).

So after the examination and taste test here is the verdict. The size/weight/quality of this brand seems to be on par with mountain house. But the flavor and texture is slightly better.

These are very close contenders. So which one will I buy next? That depends on the price. I would pay a little more for this brand, but not a lot more.

For the 45th anniversary, I got space-food sticks and astronaut ice-cream. No one liked the space-food sticks, but the astronaut ice-cream went fast.

So for the 50th, I got a few dozen astronaut ice-cream bars, and they were a hit, again.

Now I have to order another box, because by the time moon-landing day was over, I'd only managed to have the one I put aside for myself. ;-)

This is the classic space ice cream and it's good. It comes in a double-sealed set of pouches. First is a thick foil sealed pouch and inside is a paper-sealed package of a block of the dehydrated ice cream. It's a special treat and my kids liked the novelty of it - and it does taste like ice cream. The package that I had, though, had a defect. The inner paper pouch had been partially sliced open. It looked like it had been sliced open when they were unboxing them to put in the foil pouches? The outer foil pouch itself was still sealed.

the cookie part tasted not good. the ice cream part tasted okay. i like the other icecream that does not include the cookie part of the ice cream sandwich.

I've been a fan of astronaut ice cream for years. As a child, I always looked forward to visiting the museum store, to get my foam flying bird and a bar of astronaut ice cream.

It's full of flavor, and the pieces melt in your mouth. Each flavor, vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate is very distinct and pleasant.

The fact that it comes already broken up makes for easy eating. I can munch a piece at a time rather than eating the bar all at once. It makes it last longer.

Though if anyone is planning to serve these to a group, I would advise pouring the pieces into one larger container for individuals to eat from, rather than giving everyone their own bar.

Because each bar is broken into different sized pieces, no two people will ever receive an identical package.

Love getting a throwback of space ice cream, makes me feel like the kid that found so much joy in the idea that what I was eating was the same thing astronauts were eating for dessert in orbit.
