I love Lodge cast iron. I have several pans, Dutch ovens, pots, everything. Cast iron is one of the best ways to cook food and the prices are exceptional. This grill is another outstanding product by Lodge. The size is perfect-not too big, not to small. Haven't taken it camping yet but I can't wait! It's easy to clean, use and store. I've used it numerous times and haven't been disappointed yet. I have a huge Weber gas grill that I love to use for its ease but nothing tastes as good as charcoal BBQ. I've used it numerous times and I haven't been disappointed yet. As a Korean person this is the ultimate for cooking Korean BBQ. My Galbi never tasted better!

Only thing you have to watch is that food can slide off easy. I've learned to make an extra corn or sausage in case of roll away accidents. That's the only downside but it's not a big deal. Bonus for my dog when sausages fall from the sky...

Best Hibachi Grill for the Money!
by AmazonCustomer (5 out of 5 stars)

The Lodge Sportsman Grill is the best Hibachi style grill, period. It is not a light weight that will fall apart after a few uses as some other Hibachi grills I have used. This grill is 30 pounds of cast-iron goodness. The grate may only have two height adjustments, but that is not a con. The grill heats up nicely, it gets hot enough to put grill marks on your food, and you can hear the sizzle!

I have used the grill almost every day for the past two weeks and produce great tasting, evenly cooked, food every time. I have also used my Lodge cast iron pans on this to saute veggies... this grill is so versatile as a cooking surface it just can't be beat!

The cooking grate is easily cleaned with a stiff nylon brush and then oiled. I use a rag soaked in peanut oil to wipe down the cooking grate after each use. Will this grill get some rust on it? Yes! It is cast iron after all. Once you have fire in this grill the seasoning will begin to burn off, but that is not a problem. After the charcoal burns out, simply empty the used coals and using your oil soaked rag wipe it out clean and make sure to get the charcoal grate, too! If you keep it oiled you will have little problems with rust. The charcoal grate will always be a challenge to keep free of rust, but don't worry. You're not cooking on the charcoal grate I hope! :)

I purchased a Camp Chef Dutch Oven Camp table to put this grill on and the table supports this grill perfectly. Another tip that is worth knowing is that when you do put this together, hand tighten the base screws. If you over tighten, the eye hole the screws go through will crack, and especially when you fire up the grill and the metal expands.

I would definitely purchase this grill again. I love it!

Nice, but a pain and not durable

I bought this item 6 months ago. Used it fairly extensively and was happy with the hibachi style bbq'ing that was possible with it. It is very good at browning things with high heat - it makes fantastic steaks.

It rusts very easily and I found myself oiling it every time I put it away. I could live with this, and it was sort of expected.

Then, the bottom plate erupted in a full length fracture the last time I heated it up. They ask you not to over tighten the bottom bolts, but I never did more than finger tight. The cast iron just doesn't hold up to the heat. So now my $100 bbq that is less functional than the $40 webber comparable is no more and I am out of luck.

I can't recommend this product because of this, despite liking its general functionality. And it did make very good steaks...

Great for Camping Trip
by seagypsy (4 out of 5 stars)

I took this new grill to the bay for our BBQ/camping trip last week and we used it for the first time. The food cooked very well and used a small amount of charcoal. We used wood on one side and that was better for heating hamburger and hot dog buns. The first hot dog rolled off the edge but I really kept an eye out on the other hot dogs and patties and they were okay. Although I read that it can grill enough food for about 4 people, but we cooked for 10 people with no problem. Since we were camping for several days, I could see that the bottom was turning orange (rust) because it was damp at night. So, when I came home, I scrubbed it with a nylon brush and covered it with a lot of oil..

I think that this is a very good camp stove. But I think that the handle is very thin and cuts through your hands when you try to carry such a heavy stove. I also wish that it had maybe a wire type of "fence" you can put around the grill so that things don't roll off, Also, maybe an optional cast iron lid. And a case that you can put it all in. Maybe even on wheels?...I'm just brainstorming here.

Great grill but the grate does not hold up.

This is the third Lodge cast iron sportsmen grill that I have purchased . IT meets my needs and is a great grill. however the grill grate does not last more than two years. the Cast Iron Grate erodes and falls apart. I have tried to purchase a new grate without success from Lodge. which means that I have to replace the whole Hibachi grill

Fantastic!

I agree with all the great 5 star reviews. So maybe I can offer some advice or helpful tips for better enjoyment of the grill.

Keep it oiled and it will get easier to clean with use.

I've used both lump and briquettes in it, both work well.

FOR QUICKER COOL DOWN,FUEL SAVINGS, AND LESS ASH!

Since it has no lid and dampers to smother out the coals.

After food is cooked, remove grill grate with Lodge Glove, oven mitt or tongs. Use a small fireplace shovel to scoop out the remaining hot coals. Place hot coals into an empty #10 can and snuff them out with a metal lid or cover. This way the remaining coals are spared for future use and the grill takes no more time to cool down than a cast iron Dutch oven. You'll have less ash to dump too. The used coals can be mixed in with a few fresh ones on the next cook or you may choose to wait until the can is full, and you'll have just about enough for a chimney worth, which all the fuel this little grill requires.

FOR EASIER CLEANING;

The bolts will fit either way, nuts to the inside or nuts to the outside. But if you will keep the nuts on the outside, sticking out the bottom, it will be easier to take apart later if needed for thorough cleaning. Because it is easier to attach a wrench to the nut if it is on the outside. Also ashes and grease drippings won't gum up the threads with crud. You may even want to consider replacing the nuts with wing nuts to eliminate the need for the 7/16" wrench.

"Exactly what I wanted!!!!" That's why I bought two of them!

These grills are great for short quick cooking and small to medium sized meals. You can even place sauce pans and frying pans on them for camping and home use. I purchased two of them in December 2012 for $69.97 each. However, at $116.00 I would never pay that price for this identical item produced by the identical manufacture.

Make sure you protect your hibachi by spraying it entirely with "Pam" or Canola oil spray before and after use. It helps also to purchase a cover designed for the hibachi.

Love it! I'm a fan of vintage cast iron and this is as good as anything ever made.

My wife is from the Philippines where they still cook with open wood fires. They are real experts there when it comes to cooking like that. She wanted to get some of that experience here in San Francisco and so I looked around as best I could. We went looking in Chinatown and found clay stoves just like they have over there in the Philippines. But as the search continued I liked the Lodge, it's still made in the USA. Their's is an old proven design updated over the years. The casting is really good, very well made. The little grill works great.

I have vintage Griswold, Wagner, and Piqua skillets and other collectible cast iron cookware. Some vintage cookware is still the best for cooking and when there is a history of craftsmanship and years of service, I like that. To be frying eggs in a skillet that's perfect for the job and know that it was doing the same thing in the 1890's before most of America had electricity, years before airplanes.. is kind of cool. Anyways, this Lodge works great and belongs with the best of any cast iron cookware regardless of era. We look forward to it being a part of our family for generations.

Not bad. Wonder what modifications people have made to it.

This is great for one to four (max.) people when you don't want to waste charcoal in a larger grill. Thoughtful design, in that you can flip grill to get food closer to fire if you want. I would really like to see how some people have tweaked this design. Air flow is one area that could be improved. You won't be cooking ribs in any traditional way, but for steaks, chicken, burgers, pork tenderloin and similar, this is a more intimate experience and will use somewhat less charcoal to get to searing temperatures and is real grilling, not a kettle, which has its own plusses, like cooking ribs.
