Great for eye exams in the ER
by TTN (5 out of 5 stars)
April 9, 2016

From all the reviews I'm reading, most people are using this to look for stains and other bodily fluids. I am an ER practitioner and our department has poor history of keeping our woods lamp (blacklight) on hand for our eye exams. I eventually got tired of dragging the large slit lamp into a room every time I just want to quickly check for corneal abrasions. I went on to Amazon in hopes of finding a blacklight penlight but came across this instead. I purchased it on a whim and am loving it so far. The light is super small and lite. I have it clipped to my stethoscope. The single LED bulb is bright enough to illuminate the area I need while not irritating the patient. I can also easily focus the light angle because it's a small portable device.

I bought 2 more to keep in my office just in case I lose this one or it runs out of juice. I haven't checked to see if it's battery replaceable.

Good Glow for the Buck
by Thomas Coffey,Top Contributor: Camping (5 out of 5 stars)
April 25, 2013

The Inova UV microlight isn't meant to be a CSI tool, but to cause certain materials and objects to fluoresce in darkness or impart a quick charge to Glow-In-the-Dark materials. This little microlight does that quite well.
Some may want to use this to look for bio-spills and stains, but the brightness and power of this microlight requires those tasks be done in a totally darkened room at at close range. This is not for tracking blood trails in the night (CSI types often use a spray material that causes blood to fluoresce under UV; hunters find Coleman gas-lanterns or high brightness incandescent lights best.
The UV microlight will reveal markers in newer currency in a normally lit room. From dusk to dawn it will cause fluorescing fishing line to visibly glow out to 15' and other materials to brightly glow at even further distances depending on exposed area. Two seconds exposure of a fluorescent marked watch face will cause it to glow for several minutes. Fifteen seconds exposure of glow-in-the-dark duct tape (Duck brand) will cause a glow lasting a very long while. (Exposing this tape to sunlight for a half hour will cause it to glow all night long.)
So the Inova UV LED microlight does a good job illuminating or charging fluorescent or glow 'markers' on objects for those needing to find things in the night while not disturbing others or compromising night adapted vision. Inova's Blue LED microlight comes in second at these tasks, but is better at lighting a path in the dark, which is why I have a UV microlight in my tackle box and another in my tool chest, but a Blue microlight on my key-ring.

I like this little light; time will tell how much!
by D L (4 out of 5 stars)

I purchased the Inova BB-R red LED pinch-light for covert surveillance purposes. The light as-is, turned out to be too bright for use in a surveillance vehicle at night, but a couple layers of duct tape brought it down to usable levels.

The switch is a press-to-select type. The first press gets you the brightest setting, the second, if pressed within a second or two of the first press, gets you the dimmer setting, and the third if pressed within a second or two of the previous press, turns on the blinking light, which runs at about 3 or 4 blinks per second.

Once the light has run on any of the three settings for several seconds, the next press will turn it off.

That the LED is recessed is a very useful feature (for my purpose) to prevent light spilling off to the sides. The light illuminates approximately an 18" circle from 5 feet away.

The metal hanging attachment appears to be reasonably sturdy, for hanging off of a zipper pull, for example; this brings me to my only complaint about the light.

The attachment point between the light and the clip is a small rectangular slot which does not allow for much side-to-side movement. Beyond restricting aim, it looks like if you were to roll on top of the light, or otherwise put significant lateral pressure on the light and its clip, that the loop could break, or the metal clip would bend out of shape and maybe result in loss of the light or disable the light if it broke in the "right" way.

A better solution would be a ring that could pivot and rotate 360° like a keychain does.

Finally I've had some pinch lights similar to these (from other brands) that developed rust on the contact points after being exposed to rain, and that rust caused intermittent connection problems and eventual light failure.

For indoor use and if placed on a lanyard (such as an I.D. badge retractable clip), this Inova BB-R appears to be well suited for close nighttime work.

Ordered 4, two did not work. Those that work are good lights.
by India One Niner (3 out of 5 stars)

I have ordered these red lights before without a problem, but issues with the four I just ordered causes me to think that I might have future problem with the other units. I have never run one of these lights down to a dead battery, so I have no idea how long they will last. But first the good points. The bright is sufficiently bright to light up a two car garage, the dim light is good for lighting items close up, all without ruining one's night vision. I usually keep a light on my vest and one on my shirt when in the field and the units I previously purchased have seen some abuse and kept working through rain, weather well below freezing, etc.. However, when I tested the four lights the arrived most recently, one did not work at all, another the light faintly came on for a second or so and then the light went out. No amount of effort could get them to work. So on this order, I had a 50% failure rate from the start. Given that I recently ordered around four other units, I have a failure rate of 25%. I reported two bad lights to Amazon and requested a refund, and received a message that replacement units would be shipped. The package arrived within two days of my request, but only one light was in the box. So I paid for four lights, but only have 3 working lights. The only potential upside is that if I put new batteries into the two bad lights, perhaps they will work. I ordered replacement batteries, as faced with two dead lights, I am wondering how much juice is actually in the working lights that I received.

I do not think the issue was the on switch getting depressed during shipping. The lights were shipped in a box large enough for a pair of shoes.

Programming instructions
by Viola DaGamba (4 out of 5 stars)
March 15, 2019

I like it. But the seller should include the PROGRAMMING instructions here on Amazon. It starts as a squeeze light, but if you keep it on for fifteen seconds, you have accidentally programmed it for bright, dim, flashing, off. To go back to being a squeeze light, push until it is flashing. Then hold for five seconds. Now it's a squeeze light again. This is easy to do accidentally, so the seller should put the programming instructions on Amazon where you can find them. Otherwise, great product. Battery lasted four months.

Inova CB Series - Good Microlights
by Thomas Coffey,Top Contributor: Camping (5 out of 5 stars)
October 5, 2015

I'm not a fan of red LED lights... generally their beam isn't bright enough for me to see by unless the distance is a matter of a few feet. I bought this to go with Inova's Wand that takes the CB style Microlight, changing the wand body glow from the green it shipped with to red. As a light to illuminate the translucent Inova wand this works great. Boaters think about using these for emergency marker lights, green and red, just in case.

The CB Series gives good function for the dollar, a great value no matter the color. I've had the rubber covering pull away on one, but in an emergency use role or inside the Inova wand, there is no rough handling.

I prefer the CB series to the newer, non-mechanical 'swipe' switched models (don't think those don't turn on when you accidentally touch them in your pocket), although I do prefer that models use of CR2032 cells instead of the thinner, shorter run time CR2016's of the CB models.

Both series Microlights have multiple modes and auto shut off's to save batteries.

Great for quick fluorescein eye exams!
by j. (5 out of 5 stars)
January 5, 2016

Nifty and cheap little light I keep clipped to my ID badge for when I perform quick fluorescein eye exams. I have actually purchased 2 of these so I can have another attached to my keychain. It is a very intense light so I use the less bright option and hold it to the side rather than in central vision. Great and easy alternative to a wood's lamp or blue LED penlight. It's secondary use is helping me light my path when it's dark outside. Cool third use I have never tried is the strobe light function for a party... or to induce seizure....

Note in instructions booklet that I found useful: if you hold the button down until the light goes off, you can change the operation so that one push is on, the second push is a less intense light, third push is a strobe light, and pushing it after a few seconds turns it off.

A Great Utility Item
by Admiral Schmickover (4 out of 5 stars)
March 16, 2015

The Microlight (red led) has found a permanent home on my key ring. It doesn't reduce your night vision and is great for reading charts in the dark. I removed the metal clip, which was awkward, and put my key ring directly through the same hole. It now fits flush with my other keys and is hardly noticeable. The red light is enough to see close up details like reading charts/maps, finding your keys after you drop them on the side of your car in the dark, but is not a flashlight. It has a maximum effective range of about 30" before it becomes too dim to be usable. This was a great purchase and has withstood several months of abuse banging around in my pocket. I would enthusiastically recommend this to a friend once the metal clip is removed.

Figured out how to change batteries - DUH !!!
by Fair_weather_fan (5 out of 5 stars)
March 6, 2015

I'm almost embarrassed to admit that it took me FOREVER to figure out how to change the batteries in this light!!! And I even went to the Inova site, which had approximately the same info as Amazon - "easy battery change, no screws, etc." Finally it occurred to me to take off the clip, force the two halves of the light apart with the tip of a thin nail file - and voila! - the two button batteries were plainly displayed! I have had the light for about 11 months and only use it for short periods a few times a week, so the original batteries still work. But I do need a night-vision-preserving SMALL flashlight, and this is definitely the best (and smallest) that I've used, or seen. The batteries are not cheap, but not all that expensive either - Amazon sells 4 Panasonic Cr2016 3v Lithium batteries for $5.79 (Prime eligible). I have saved the packaging, warranty info, and operating instructions from all sorts of gadgets, but apparently tossed everything that came with this flashlight into the recycling pile... Now that I have the clip off, I think I will leave it off, and use a lanyard instead.
