They used to make camping equipment you could rely on to be sturdy and well built but this stove is

Coleman quality has deteriorated considerably over the past decade. They used to make camping equipment you could rely on to be sturdy and well built but this stove is an example of how shoddy their products have become. The material is thin and flimsy and the "locks" on the two wind guards are worthless. If you even look at them funny, they unlatch, causing the panels to collapse and the stove lid to fall shut. The electronic ignition on the single burner worked for one day (one meal) and now has to be ignited with a match. The burner controls are another poorly designed feature. They turn easily but do little to control the flame; it's pretty much either full blast or off. I've seen reviews that mentioned dings or weld spots in the base and mine had them as well. They don't affect the performance of the stove but shouldn't be part of a quality product. I shopped a long time before I settled on this stove, but it was mostly because I couldn't find anything better to suit my needs. I can't honestly recommend this stove but I don't know of a better alternative. Coleman should be ashamed for putting such a mediocre product on the market.

Good enough while it lasted

I love the concept of this grill, however nothing about it quite works. Like many portable grills there is no setting enough to easily cook on. The too hot flame is only in the dead center since it's a single bar. The well the grill burner sets in is so shallow that any grease what so ever creates a raging fire. Said fire is hot enough to melt the cook surface almost instantly (see photos)

Coleman Grill Stove
by Robert K. Thompson (4 out of 5 stars)

I just recently used my Coleman Grill Stove for the first time while camping for two weeks. I used it several times to grill fish and hamburgers. It was easy to light and cooked both the fish and hamburgers to my satisfaction. The grill control knob goes from low flame to high with very little rotation(you can turn it much more but you do not get more flame). I did not use the stove side other than to light it to ensure it worked. I cooked for just two people and the grill was large enough for us: however, for a larger family, the size of the grill is probably not large enough to cook everything at once(the Coleman with no stove side and the larger grill would be good for a larger family). I also purchased the separate griddle to use in place of the grill. I used it to cook bacon and eggs. I could fit 8 slices of bacon on the griddle at one time. Eggs were cooked after the bacon. Both the griddle and the grill worked well with the understanding that the hottest areas of both were in the middle with the back slightly less hot and the front the least hot. My main reasons for four stars instead of five are:(1) size of grill is marginal for larger families,(2) I would have liked a bigger range of flame control,(3)I would have liked more even heat over the entire grill area (there is just one burner under the middle of the grill or griddle).

Great camp grill!

We really enjoy camping with this grill. It's a nice compact size that travels well, but at the same time it's large enough to cook for 4. We purchased a soft travel case for it, which was pricey but worth it. We've used this grill now for over 2 years and really don't have any complaints!

I love it!!!

First one I received had an issue, it wouldn't spark on the grill side, got it replaced. Amazon is amazing at that. 2nd one came in, and did an ops check on it. It SPARKS!!! Got excited and used it the next morning. Grilled some chicken, a lot of steak... I love it! 5 stars because it works and it doesn't take up much space. Easy to clean! Only down side is that not the whole entire grill section is heated evenly, but that doesn't bother me. I expected it be like that. It may bother some people.
***Yeah, I did contact Coleman first about replacing it. I would had to go thru this whole entire process of filling out forms and marking the product with numbers and it had to be this color, this size, this location. Pay shipping and handling, once they get it, they will send my replacement. I got annoyed just looking at the direction.... So yeah...

5 years of camping & summer sports later, still going strong
by Sam Ali (4 out of 5 stars)

I picked this grill up in 2010 based primarily on its compactness, strong reviews, versatility, and my past experience with Coleman camp stoves growing up. It's been the primary cooking source for 2-4+ people during 3-4 weekend long music festivals, 6+ all day jamborees on a softball field, and 15+ weekend or longer camping trips.

Just used it this weekend again with no issues. The insta-lite button still works on the first press. I didn't get the carrying case and it is probably a little more beat up looking than it needs to be because of that. I never attached the feet and am always in danger of loosing those pesky but important things so I suggest you dont make the same mistake I did there. The painted surfaces clean up pretty easily with a couple of clorex wipes. The area under the main cooking surface is beyond cleaning at this point. I scrape crud off/out of it before storing and call it good (dont forget the plastic grease trap that slides out!). The cast iron grill/grate cleans easily with a wire brush. As other reviewers mentioned, you do have to hold the whole stove when pressing the ignite button. And in heavy wind the sides can detach, causing the lid to fall (this has happened maybe 4 out of the last 25 times Ive used it..not that often).

The grill portion cooks 4 burgers at a time without issue, you can even fit a dog or two on at that time. It gets hot and the side vents do a good job of blocking the wind. The flame has never gone out on me while I have propane. It'll run for a couple hours on a single propane canister which means about 2 canisters during a 3 day camping trip cooking 2-3 meals a day. The side burner area fits a standard tea kettle just fine and brings water to a boil for coffee in a few minutes. Sometimes we do this with a pan sitting on the cast iron grate with meat/veggies which is nice for breakfast.

All in all this is probably the best camp stove I've had.I expected to get 5 years of heavy summer use out of it ($20/year) before needing to replace parts or the whole thing and I think it's on track to meet and probably exceed that. There is no rust but the paint has chipped off in one or two spots from me banging it around without a case. I might hit those parts with some hi temp paint..we'll see.
**2015 5-year update**

Going into my 5th season with this guy. I did have to replace the the pressure regulator (http://ASIN.cc/UYBnq) last year as I couldn't screw propane onto the old one any longer. I'm also lining the bottom inside drop area with tinfoil before each trip now and that has made cleanup a non issue. I finally picked up the carrying case and permanently affixed the feet (should have done both earlier!). I'm still very happy with this guy. I still want to refresh it with some high temp paint.

We have given this heavy use.

I cook outside regularly (even on most days in the summer) so we aren't exactly using this as a weekend camper might.

I have been using other Coleman propane camp stoves in this manner for years. I scrapped one (from the early eighties) two years ago because it rusted out. I have another (even older one from 1974) that is about to go the same way.

I bought this Grill Stove because I no longer want to carry a propane barbecue around. This one is plenty big enough to grill on for two people. This summer I will be cooking on this Grill Stove plus one of my old green Coleman two burner stoves.

Both the burners burn plenty hot (frequently this is a problem with propane stoves - the burners can be feeble).

The Insta Start (piezeo-electric igniter) works fine for the small burner but the one for the grill burner no longer works.

The area around the burners gets filthy & is very hard (well, it's impossible really) to clean, even though this grill stove is advertised as being "Easy Clean". This is only a cosmetic problem but better design would have fixed it.

I have an earlier Coleman propane stove with stainless steel surrounds under the burners and this cleans up perfectly even though decades old.

I understand my use is atypical and the cooking & grilling qualities of this unit are absolutely superior but I would like it more if it weren't so gungy looking after two years of steady use.

BTW, I always use a 20# propane tank with a Coleman "tree" adapter and hoses. I never use the little one pound propane tanks which I consider basically useless for stoves, and expensive with it.

Great features but some questionable design decisions
by JMKM (3 out of 5 stars)

We bought this stove to replace our 33-year Hillary (Sears) 2 burner propane stove (which still worked, for the record). The idea of having a grill within the stove, and matchless lighting appealed to us. We have yet to cook on it (will update this review then) but we si set it up and determine that it does work before heading out into the wilderness.

Two potential issues have arisen so far:
1. Attaching a gas bottle to the stove is "sub-optimal". After attaching the rigid gas tube to the bottle, one attaches the tube to the stove, using a knurled ring that moves into the frame of the stove as you tighten it. The problem is that the ring isn't long enough, so there's less and less to grip on as it gets closer to tight. It's hard to confirm that it's fully tightened because there's just nothing to grip on by then.
2. The matchless ignition doesn't always work. If it's not dark, it's hard to see if the sparker is actually sparking (it seems to spark only once every 2 or 3 tries). With the conventional burner this is not too much of an issue as it's easy to tell by sound that the burner is lit. With the grill burner, it's harder to tell by sound when the burner is lit. I'm not sure if this is a design defect, or manufacturing, but we'll be packing a box of waterproof matches just in case. And checking each time we're attempting to light a burner that it's actually lit.

Great stove, the lid holding mechanism needs a redesign
by Devaclis (3 out of 5 stars)

Purchased this stove for a week long camping trip in the mountains. My requirements were a small, portable, propane stove with a grill and a burner for pots.

Pros:
1. Used very little propane even when boiling water.
2. The grill and burner worked flawlessly
3. Compact yet large enough to cook meals for 4 people
4. Sleek, pretty, and light
4. Really easy to clean up

Cons:
1. Push button start requires you to hold onto the stove with your other hand otherwise the stove slides backwards from the force needed to push the button.
2. The 2 side flaps are used to hold the back of the stove up (The red part). The 2 small points where the back attaches are very easy to disconnect and I found the back of the stove slamming down almost every time I tried to flip burgers, or if I bumped it with a pot, or even if the wind was blowing in just the right direction.

A simple design modification to better connect the side flaps and the back of the stove would make this a MUCH better deal. I purchased this stove with the Coleman carrying bag and the Coleman 3 piece serving set. Great combo.

Great for camping and tailgating
by TechLeatherCraft (4 out of 5 stars)

For Coleman PerfectFlow Insta Start Grill Stove.

This is thing works well for "easy" camping. It grills hotdogs, and hamburgers great. I haven't tried steaks, but I think it would work okay with thinner-to-average cuts of meat. (also depending on how rare or medium you like your meat) This is a great combined unit. Stick a small pot on the burner with some beans, and grill some meat, and you are good to go!

My only concern is the connector valve. It is a separate brass piece, that first needs to connect to the grill, then the bottle. The connector on the grill it self is recessed, (probably to prevent damage). The valve is kind of difficult to screw onto the side of the grill. As mentioned in other reviews. The grip on the valve is hard to grab, every-time I need to triple check the connection, and listen to make sure the propane is not leaking out of that connection. Once it is connected, the bottle part is far easier. I'm docking a star because of connecting piece is cumbersome.

Also, there are other versions of this grill, it got this from Amazon directly to $90. It is well worth the price. This version has the "Insta Start" meaning it's got a ignition switch, so you don't have to bring a lighter to start the flame. (But you should have one just in case). I've seen the other versions for more, that don't have the ignition. Some people don't care. But something to consider.
