Not As Good As One I Had...

I'm a handyman and do a lot of projects requiring a laser level. My old B&D model BDL100 finally gave up the ghost after about 8 years of service. So after some research I bought this model. Have to say not a big fan after a couple months of use.

This model has some good things but not enough:

The method to attach to wall is not satisfactory. The "spike" is only a few millimeters long and thick. Leaves big, noticeable hole in wall. Old model had hyperdermic size pin, left very small hole. And was long enough to stay attached to wall. I used new one and when tapping in a nail and it fell off wall. I used a command strip like it suggests but it's just not the same. Plus the magnetic holder is just not strong. Needs a redesign.

The laser is bright and strong, but is an either/or direction. My old one I could put in middle of wall and it shot both ways. But my old one did not shoot up, so plus for new one as it does. Also new one can do angles. But I got away without using those on my old one. So a plus for new but not good enough.

Battery life is short. New one is two AAA batteries. Old one 9 Volt.

Plus old one was also a stud finder too. This one is not. So now I carry two tools versus one.

It's just not good for a handyman who uses this type of device often. For around the house guess it's ok. But not a "professional" tool. The mounting method to wall really needs to be better.

I'm probably going to sell this one and find the BDL100 somewhere and use it moving forward. Unless someone can recommend a new version that "sticks" to the wall and has built in stud finder.

Good idea, poor execution.

What a headache. So this is really handy in that you can stick it into the wall via a pin in the back. Hands-free leveling - what's not to love, right? It turns out, a LOT. Theoretically, you can display your laser line through the top or sides (one at a time only). Again, *theoretically* you are able to lock your angle, then switch laser display depending on where you need see the line. The problem is that the hash marks to measure degrees are REALLY small, NOT numbered properly (only every 15 degrees) and is horrifically inaccurate. Even when trying for a straight line just up the wall, trying to eyeball the hashmarks, there is no way to use this tool alone for accurate measure. What looked like zero degrees on the display was WAY off when looking at the laser up the wall. We had to use our flat level on the laser line and adjust from there. Then(!) when we actually get it as level as we could using this and the secondary level, it was impossible to keep it so trying to lock this. Each time we clicked it to try to lock the laser line, it would move and we would have to start over. I would definitely not buy this again.

It's okay, but basic

I was very sad when my previous Black & Decker laser level stopped working due to leaking batteries. It seems that model is no longer being sold, so I had to choose from the currently available models.

Here are the main things to know:
1. The laser shines out of either the right or the left side--not both at the same time (as with my previous laser level).
2. You have the option to use the laser for vertical leveling (the laser shines out of the top).
3. There is no stud finder (which my older model had).
4. The laser is not super-bright, so it doesn't go far.

It's okay, and it does the job for the price. It's just not as good as the model I used to have.

Perfect for the homeowner

I was hoping this little unit would help with installing six closets of component shelving, and it did. This should not be considered "professional" grade, but it easily and accurately provided a level straight line for shelving components running to six feet. It comes with an attachment that uses a small pointed pin to insert into wallboard. The laser unit hangs onto the attachment using a magnet. Now here's the important part - I bumped mine with a tape measure and my laser level dropped to the floor (tile), the battery cover popped off, spilled batteries around the floor - I thought that was the end. I put the batteries back in, closed the cover, and the unit still worked perfectly. You'll need to experiment a bit to see what works best in your application, but for the homeowner, this little gadget is perfect. Just make sure to push the switch all the way to the right to engage "self leveling." It levels left, right and vertical using a selector.

The library looks great!

I bought the Black and decker BullsEye laser level when I decided to build a library out of floating shelves in my basement. before the BullsEye I was using a torpedo level and hanging the shelves was harder than wrestling a bear. I finally broke down and ordered the BullsEye and what a difference it made. The level comes in a very nice plastic package that doubles as a case which I continue to keep it in. The level also comes with a small magnetic mount that has a pin on the back that can be used to hold the level in placer on drywall. That little mount was a life saver! the hole it leaves behind is very small and unnoticeable unless you are looking for it, if it does bother you it could be covered simply with paint, no need for putty.

The level can be used in many different ways, the laser can be set to shoot from either side or the top simply by pressing a button. You can also use the auto-level setting which is absolutely great and works perfect every time for straight level lines. If you need to hang pictures in a stairwell on a perfect 45 degree line, no problem you can set the level, stick the mount to the wall and simply turn the level until the scale reads 45, too easy.

If you just bought a house, if your working on a new project, or if you just find that you have a bunch of crooked photos all over the house then I highly recommend the BullsEye. I use this thing all the time!

Best auto level for the money

This is my go to auto level for projects at work. For the money the value is very high. I would not say this a perfect level, but for a graphics person that needs the auto level function with one hand and the other one to mark with, this is perfect to get me "in the area of level". Is it perfect- no, but neither are floors and walls and ceilings. Unless your going to spend 150$ plus, this is as good as it gets. I have tried various other options with ranging price points. Nothing come close with all that this has to offer. I now require these in my guys work bags. I would say that the further you get from base the +/- gets worse. They say (I think) that range is 16' +/- 1/8 inch. I would say that is not correct. It is closer to 1/4 inch + at 16'. I would not use this more than about 8' max from base with leveling marks on that 8' path, then level from the marks to "tighten" up level. Using this method you can go long distances. If this needs to be exactly level then a rotary laser is a better option.

Great but wall hanger needs improvement

I am a Black & Decker fan since their products are usually very decent without the expensive price tag. This product almost lived up to my expectations.

It seems very strong. In other words I believe if I dropped it (I'm not going to try it) that it could hand it.

The rubber sides make it easy to grip onto.

The lazer beam is powerful enough to get the job done but wish it had a little more power. Just reassure you it is just fine for any average job.

The only problem I had with the was the wall mount. While there are MANY ways to the wall mount (i.e. scew, built-in dry wall pin, 3M Command Strips) the built-in dry wall pin is very fragile. I was able to use it once. The second time I tried to hang it up the pin bent and broke off. So as a little helpful note: Be gentle and dont force it. The good news is you can buy replacment parts but you can't just buy the pin. The whole assembly for the wall mount costs about $8 through Black & Decker. Although this pin broke I still have the other two options of hanging it up so I will not be buying the replacement part just yet.

All in all I would recommend this product to anyone wanting to save a few bucks and just needs a lazer leveler for any easy DIY project such as hanging pictures or shelves.

Why are your frames and shelving still crooked?

I hate myself for not getting this sooner. If you have ever thought to yourself "I wonder if those pictures/poster are leveled out", just grab this thing and be sure.

You can do different angles if you want to stagger things in a diagonal but my favorite by far is the self leveling mode it has. You literally put it on the wall, either by hand or with the included wall mount, and the laser levels out to 0 for you. Made hanging 8 pictures and 2 shelves a 30 minute job.

Laser also is able to go over screws, so if you hang a shelf with multiple wall screws, you can measure down the laser to make it a snap to install.

Fits the bill for simple indoor projects like hanging shelves. The built-in drywall spike to hang the level on the wall broke off during the 3rd time I used it. There is another way to mount the level by placing a screw in the wall. This leaves a larger hole in the wall than the nail-sized drywall spike. Using a screw works, but it's an extra step and an extra drywall patch required at the end of the project.

I think the mounting method could be revised. Even before it broke, it was difficult to get the drywall spike to go into the wall. It kept rotating back into the mounting bracket: was difficult to keep it pointed at the wall while applying pressure.

All said, at this price point the level is still a huge help. No more pencil lines, no more juggling a level and a pencil while holding a board on the wall. Absolutely worth the money - but could use some design tweaking by B&D to make the mounting method more sure-fire and durable.
