A wonderful toy that sparks the imagination

This is a great toy. I bought this for my son at Toys R Us last year, and he plays with it all the time. There are so many possible variations that the set ends up being a collection of toys, rather than just a sub. Is it a professional, collector-quality sub that acts like a real submarine? No. It's a simple toy that is perfect for the average 4 to 7 year old (perhaps even older, actually). The included motor and propeller can do no harm. The rest of the toy is also very safe (but not intended for smaller children who may stick pieces in their mouths). Are there pieces that can get lost? Yes of course. But the detachable squid legs are fun for pretend "battles under water", and they are easily re-attached. In general, this toy really holds up under intense play, and introduced us to the better side of the Matchbox brand. We were so impressed by the value that we tried to purchase more for the kids of friends. Unfortunately, it appears it has been discontinued. I had to resort to Amazon. If you can still find it, grab it. We ended up paying a premium online to get one for a dear friend's son. It was a BIG hit, and worth every penny.

I bought this for my 3 year old son for Christmas. He LOVES it! I have to say it wasnt quite what I was expecting but he is in love with this thing so I guess thats all that matters! The submarine doesnt actually dive and move underwater...the propeller is TINY (not the huge one pictured, that is just for looks)so the sub just kind of sinks and rolls over. A unique feature is that you can actually turn the sub into a raft or boat as well. It just kind of snaps together, very easy for kids to do. When built as a raft, the propeller does move it in the water and it is pretty neat. The ocotpus has suction cups and the tentacles come off and on. He has played with this toy every single day since he has opened it. Im super happy with it and recommend it to any one looking for a fun bath or water toy

So Much Toy for Such A Great Price

I think this submarine toy deserves an award! Comes with a squid which is a squirty toy who's legs can be taken apart and the legs also have suction cup on each so it will stick on the sides of the tub. Then you've got the submarine with a little figurine that you can put into different compartments. The sub can be assembled in many different ways and the motor is great. Does the job but isn't powerful enough to do any damage if a little finger stops the propeller. It can also be assembled to be a hoover craft with the big propeller attaching to the motor and making the big one spin. The design of the toy is amazing. My 3 year old son received it as a gift and we had to buy one for my 7 year old son because the two were fighting over it all the time. We also bought the expensive big shark adventure toy too but this little one really packs a lot into a pretty inexpensive toy. My only wish is that there were more small water matchbox rigs toys like this one - maybe a small pirate ship and more figurines that came with the toy. Anyway, I buy this toy for my kids' friends birthdays because it's so fantastic.

the squid is the best part of this toy!

My son is almost five and he loves the squid that is part of this set. It has suction cups on each of it's tentacles and you can make it stick to windows, the bathtub or parts of the boat. I'm not sure why it is made so that the tentacles can come off though and we have already lost one tentacle. The batteries wear out quickly and It never really powered the boat. It sort of sluggishly circled. Despite what I think of the toy, Conor loves it and that is the important thing. I think it looks too plasticky and fake but to him it is just an awesome toy that makes taking a bath fun. So it serves it's purpose and I have to give the makers credit for making a toy that kids love. You will need to get something to put it in because it has a lot of pieces and you don't want to lose them. I would reccomend this to a friend because it is a lot of fun for the price

Fun, but Mega Rig makes better

We own the whole Matchbox Mega Rig collection and this is probably the least fun toy of the collection. That being said, this is still a very cool and very fun toy. My kid loves it, but he does still favor the other toys out of the collection. Try buying the Mega Rig Shark or Mega Rig Jurassic set first. These are a bit more fun and a bit more durable. They also build a easier. Like I said before, there is nothing really wrong with this toy, it is a lot of fun, but not the best. I rated this 4 stars only because there is better from Mega Rig.

One of the Best Toys of Christmas

I gave this to my sons (ages 4 and 6) for Christmas along with the Matchbox Mega Rig Shark Adventure and they have been the hit of Christmas. And bathtime too! They both are high quality and durable. The pieces of both ships come apart and can be built again and again into different configurations. My boys LOVE it! They love that they can be used in the water and on dry ground although being able to get something into the water is tops for them. They enjoy them so much, I'm so glad that I got them for my boys!

Too many pieces

It falls apart. Constantly. The legs on the octopus come off, the sub itself is 5 or 6 pieces, and none of them really "click" together to hold. While it was quite the excitement booster upon receipt, with it my son became quite frustrated and quit playing with it pretty quickly. I guess the coolest part of the set is the octopus though, as he squirts water however it is difficult to get his suction cups on the tentacles to stick to anything. I really view this toy as a complete waste of my money :(.

Great Bath Toy/Overall Play Toy

I purchased the Squid Sub for my seven year old son. It was the only toy he kept asking for from Santa. You can't beat the price or the two day shipping. I would've paid shipping plus another $15.00 if I would've purchased it from another website. My son absolutely loves it. He plays with it all the time in the bath tub and in his room. It has a lot of little add ons and the squid is pretty neat. It has suction cups and it squirts water.

Squid fun in the tub

My 6-year-old just loves ocean-themed toys, especially when a squid is involved. He plays with the squid (which looks more like an octopus to me) daily in the tub. He combines it with the sharks and divers that were packaged with other sets in this series. The arms of the squid come on and off easily. My son plays rough with his toys and this one seems able to take a beating without breaking down.

Fun toy!

My son loves this sub and squid. It is one of the few kid's toys that can actually be used in water! My son plays with this in the tub. The squid has suction cups that you can stick on to tile walls. Also, fun to configure in different combos. He's getting a lot of use out of it.
