This is a nice looking piece of junk. At least the one I got. The compass wheel does not sit true and thus the orientation is off as much as 20 degrees. You would surely get lost if you depended on this compass to give you accurate readings.

I held off commenting on this compass until I could solidly test it. I am currently in Officer Candidate School (Army) and we had land navigation for drill (June/2015). I had this compass and our team had 2 Cammenga compasses (one tritium and one phosphorescent). I used this compass during our first few points but stopped the testing since I had made a reasonable determination in its deficiencies and just could not tolerate it.

Here's what I found:
1) It sticks alot. It has a little water "bubble" to level the compass which is annoying to get and the actual compass sticks.
2) you can't do the cheek-to-compass method, it isn't built for that.
3) When you do get it to level, as long as you have an accurate compass nearby, you can verify that it is correct, but sometimes it takes a long time to find the point and you have to sit there and wait.
4) It's $10

Summary: Out of all the groups, ours was the only one that finished and got all our points early. I mention this not so much to brag but to mention that a) we finished quickly because the compass lined up quickly and b) some of the candidates which had competent skills in land nav and had actually practiced on their own BEFORE hand had sub-par compasses. In our discussion, the accuracy of the compass played a large role since we compared our points to where they ended up. I need to pass a land navigation day and night test and this compass will at most be an "oh crap, i need something" option. When I used the Cammenga I LOVED IT. It gave an accurate and quick azimuth which I need. So no, I could not trust this compass.

NOTE: I need to note that this compass did not appear broken in any way/shape/form and did look solidly built but the actual design/build of the interior of the compass was crap compared to better made compasses.

First one!, box falling apart, compass seems very slow and inaccurate, protective case has a hole in it from being rough handled. But, those things should not matter!

I changed my review. From 2 stars to 1. I am not trying another one after compared to one I bought locally at a military surplus store.

The SE CC4580 MILITARY has good, and bads!
It seems durable, it's weight 6.4 oz. It's a bit bulky and has no latch to keep the cover shut or flapping as your walking. Not good for hunting, I can not get an accurate North reading that I trust this is a big one, that's what you buy a compass for!

It has a level ring bubble that you use to center to get a reading but it completely off in relation to actual level.

The degree ring seems loose and chowdery, a bit grinddy if fine sand got under it it'd be awful, the degree ring does glow bright, but sadly the North arrow does not, but remember getting an accurate North read is just deplorable.

It has a little sight viewing magnifying viewer that is sorta neat but as stated pertaining to "North" it's useless.

This product is much like those button type compasses that you can purchase off of Flea-bay where you buy 20 for $5 bucks and only 5 are good, and the rest end up in the landfill.

This product looks good feels heavy but don't work! Good for a display case or landfill degradation experiment.

Ordered this with the intent of chucking into my camping gear in the off chance I might ever use it. However I was led to believe it would be much lighter than it actually is, which rendered it an extremely questionable addition to a survival bag that I'm trying to keep as lightweight as possible.

Not that the weight really matters... my compass never pointed north, nor anywhere near one a magnetic axis. (Amazon quickly offered a refund for that fact.)

This compass will kill you

First impression is its junk. Second impression is its still junk. Third impression is I've wasted my money. Please, go elsewhere and buy a different compass. This one will kill you if you rely on it to guide you. It will not swing to north. Your better off learning to use your wristwatch!

Buyer beware: this failed device is non-returnable!

The features seemed promising but this compass fails at its most basic use: the stuck compass card does not point to the North. The compass I received has a compass card that is severely out of balance which causes it to tilt and stick in one direction. The card will not spin at all when the unit is held level. This compass is also very heavy for its size and could be useful (if it worked) for holding a map flat on a surface in windy conditions. Due to its weight, it has no place in a lightweight field pack. An attempt was made to return this defective device and a statement appeared that said it is not eligible for returns. Very disappointed.

First Review : Crooked sighting dial. This one is going back. Guess u get what u pay for.

FOLLOW UP - Amazon sent me a new compass within a week at no charge and this one is working fine and the sighting dial is perfect. Overall, the compass seems solid to me. Its got a heavy metal feel, no air bubble in the dial - so far. When I set it on a plastic table next to my other compass' (12 inches apart) and my iPhone compass they all point in the same direction.

Some peeps seem to indicate that this is a bad compass, maybe its not the best you can buy. But I dont' regularly do orienteering at 11:00pm at night or do something were my life depends on me knowing where north is to within 1 degree of error. For the money its worth it to me as a compass for the go-bag or as a spare in my jeep in case I get stuck and need to walk back.

When you get it check it out, compare it to another compass and use it for a few minutes. If its not right Amazon will send you another at no charge. So you can't loose. Get one and hope its a good one, if not tell Amazon and they will make it right.

It works, but it's not worth the price

The needle sticks in place so you have to tap it regularly to free it to get better and more accurate bearings. The needle itself is the heart, point and purpose of the compass so you would think that they could get that part right. I understand that they manufacture items to a price point so they have to use lower quality materials but they could at least give you a needle that works.

NOT A COMPASS - Could not reliably point to north

I think I had reasonable expectations for this product, after reading the reviews here. I was looking for something good enough for a cub scout to use to find north, and get "good enough" readings to do basic entry level (let's learn to read a map) orienteering. I was not expecting a precision tool.

The physical construction seemed fine, pretty great in fact for the price point. My unit had one major and critical flaw. The compass itself...the part that spins to point to north, trapped air bubbles under it most of the time. The air bubbles would cause it to tilt at such an angle where it could not spin to point to north. If a compass can't reliably point to north, it's not a functional compass. My unit was not a functional compass.

I am disappointed because this could be a really great product, with really great materials and features for the price. If it could find north, it would easily be worth two or three times the price.

If the manufacturer is reading, I know this is a knock-off of a much more expensive compass, and wants to look like that compass, but if slots or holes were cut into the wheel to let trapped air bubbles through, it would be very functional. If you can't build an air bubble free compass at this price point, which is fine, you need to modify the design to not trap the air bubbles under the wheel, causing it not to be able to spin to point to north. Our unit is being returned.

Terrible product, chinese toy manufacturing quality.

After just evaluating this product for an hour, here is a non-comprehensive list of fundamental flaws it has:
1- Manufacturing quality is atrocious. The compass dial doesn't stand flat, the housing is loose, some of the lines that should align to each other or center with the dial, do not. These are only some of the manufacturing problems.
1- The instruction manual is full of typos and errors, is incomprehensible in some parts and is in complete. It is basically lifted off of a different compass manual. At one point, it refers to page 19, where the manual has only 16.

In conclusion, this product is not worth your money.
