I wish this were a quality product & I wish Phillips would stand by it.

I purchased my first of these lights in October of 2009. It is now October 2010 and I just received my 5th replacement light in the mail. Yes, I said 5th. I've seen from other reviews that many had problems with the bulbs going out. That was never a problem for me. Instead something internally went haywire with each appliance such that the light would turn on & off by itself or the radio would come on & off by itself at random. Other times the buttons would simply not work or they would cause a function to happen that they weren't designed to (e.g. the light button would turn the radio on). I will say that customer service has been wonderful. They have gladly replaced my light with each malfunction. It wasn't until this last instance that I got a bit of a run around. They mysteriously couldn't find any of the documentation from the past year of all my service problems. Thankfully I kept good notes and was able to give them the reference number from every phone call. My ultimate disappointment was being told with this last replacement that the only thing the company is willing to do for me is to continue to send me the same poorly made model or I can opt for a newer model that is lesser of a product (i.e. it doesn't have a personal music option and it doesn't do dusk simulation). Kind of a crappy deal I would say. If they are unwilling to give me a refund they should at the very least offer me the latest fully loaded model that is comparable to the one I originally purchased. The company is well aware that this is a shoddy product. It is really unfortunate because I love what it is supposed to do. When the light is working properly it's fantastic and it has completely transformed my dark mornings. I have to advise you cautiously about purchasing any of these lights. I know with the newer models the company has at least made it possible for people to replace the lightbulbs if they burn out. An improvement, yes, but I don't know if they've improved the manufacturing of the rest of the machine. And, very disappointing that the best this company will do is to continue to replace a chronically malfunctioning machine with the same model.

Buyer Beware

I rarely write reviews--let alone bad ones--but I feel very strongly about this one, so here we go: I initially loved this product -- waking up to the gradual light was absolutely delightful, especially as the dark winter morning hours make waking up a bit of a struggle.

After 4 months, the light stopped working. I only use the light as part of the "wake-up" call in the morning, not for reading, or anything else. There's no way to open the encasement and look at the bulb or replace it yourself, so I checked the user guide and was able to confirm that replacing the bulb would require calling Customer Service. I was surprised that it would burn out so quickly since the instructions stated that it should last much, much longer, so I figured it might just be a glitch. I called Customer Service and the representative very helpful -- she sent me shipping label and instructions. It took approximately four weeks to get it back (during that time I had to go back to rude awakenings courtesy of my beep-beep-beeping alarm clock). The bulb only worked for two months before the light went out, again. I don't plan to send it back for yet for a second time -- based on the reviews here, it seems like it would an exercise in futility, so I'm going to look for a different (more inexpensive) product under a different brand.

Easy Wake up remedy.
by Broseph Stalin (5 out of 5 stars)

Background :
* I'm in the military which means EARLY wakeups (3:30AM and on daily).
* Must be ready for physical activities (mile+ swims, 4miles+ runs) upon wakeup with 12+ hour days

History:

Used traditional nuclear attack alarm clock for the past 5 years, waking up in anger, terror, etc. I wouldn't use the snooze because I can only handle that amount of irritation maybe once an hour and I also refused to put my wife through that as she wouldn't have to wakeup for at least another 5 hours. This resulted in several missed wake up times. When I did manage to wake up using this alarm, I would be fairly angry throughout the morning even while at work. I am convinced that waking up in this manner WILL shave years off your life.

Problem:

With the prospect of waking up earlier than normal to endure a vigorous training program while maintaining alertness and a clean appearance, I had to find a better way. I thought of how easy it was to wake up, even at early times, on the weekends if the sun was shining. So I asked myself how to trick my body's circadian cycle, did a little Google search and compared a few products. My result was a no brainer.

Solution:

This product allows me to wake up without using any sound. The light is bright enough, especially if its only a foot or two away from you. I usually wake up half way through the light up process anyway, before the sound kicks in. If I need to use sound, it is always available (just turn up the volume) with more than just a robot death screech as an option. I have to admit I don't use the sounds the clock comes with, but I have tested them and they are soothing and effective. I enjoy waking up to something more motivating (End Title song from the movie Crimson Tide). Just set the Ipod/ Iphone to the song of choice, dock it, flip the alarm switch to on and goodnight. Yes, it CHARGES IPHONES.

Other Reviews:

I read the reviews before I bought this item and I was quite upset after receiving it in the mail. The reviews did it no justice.. everyone complains about stupid stuff. Get over it.
*Sound Quality : Its no BOSE but it sounds GOOD and is definitely loud enough at 1/4 max level.
*Alarm/Snooze Switch: yeah, its a lever, its plastic.. These aren't problems. I don't have to go on a witch hunt to find my snooze button, hitting every other button on the alarm in the process, even though I never need the snooze anyway. Don't worry about the material its made out of as you wont be waking up in a hostile environment with your karate knife edge ready for combat. The volume transitions from lowest to user set level and gently wakes you no matter what music/sound you have set.
*Light Longevity: This is a reasonable future concern, but are you really going to let a light bulb get in your way? If it burns out, call Philips. If they don't help, then don't worry about the warranty, carefully disassemble the product, find the bulb model and order one... Quit whining and find a solution to keep this awesome product working.
** dont forget to set the dimmer on the display ** READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL ffs**

Nice light, but overpriced for what you get
by orangeena (3 out of 5 stars)

I have a horrible time waking up in the morning so I thought this would be the perfect alarm clock for me. I perviously owned the iHome alarm clock with ipod dock, but really wanted the light feature. The modern design is great. The gental ramp up in light 30 minutes before the alarm is set is the perfect amount of time for me.

The ipod dock is great and is what sold me. If you set to use the ipod as the wake up alarm, it will start with whatever song and playlist you last stopped at. This is much better than the iHome, which no matter where you stopped the music on your ipod at night, it would always start with the very first song alphabetically on your ipod and play from there. The philips alarm clock allows you to listen to anything you want upon waking.

There are a few drawbacks though:
- I found that the light woke me up beautifully....for about 3 days. After that, I got used to it and while it still helps me wake up a little bit, mornings are still rough. I think the light would be much more effective if it was an actual full-spectrum bulb, or at least a bulb with a blueish cast. I may replace the bulb myself, but at the price I paid, I would have expected a better bulb to begin with. Its widely noted in light therapy research that full spectrum is best and blue spectrum is better. I would have expected Philips to know this.
- The speaker in the back is a bit unfortunate. The sound quality is not great and the quality issue is only in part due to the rear speaker. Its just not a very good speaker. Putting it in the back only makes it work.
- The nature sounds are nice. Some of them have loops that are far to short, though, and only end up being annoying.
- The buttons on the side, although sleek, are very hard to work with. Setting the alarm and clock, turning the alarm on or off, tuning the radio, etc. take patience and focus...even after owning the clock for a few months.

Overall, it's nice, but a bit overpriced.

Nice when it works, but expensive and doesn't last
by Langosta39 (1 out of 5 stars)

Worked great for a while. The controls are annoying and hard to use when your tired and laying in bed. After about 9 months the thing began to wake me up randomly with the radio. It got to the point where it would just sit there and turn itself on and off. I was not amused. My wife much less so. I tore it apart and found that the switches are anything but normal, but I rigged in my own to fix it. Then I realized the warranty wasn't up yet, whoops. 3 months later it starts totally trippin out and waking me up again. There is nothing worse than a product that plays practical jokes on you while you are in a 3am groggy stupor. I proceeded to ensure that it will never interrupt my sleep again. My wife was a bit disturbed by the commotion, but we are both much happier now. When will iHome make something like this but not crappy??? Oh yeah, and sometimes it wouldn't turn the lamp on past like 10%, it would sit there and struggle until you unplugged and replugged it. Again, don't buy this thing unless you like wasting money and ruining sleep.

Unplug If Problems Arise

Never really used the iPod option as spouse really liked the (installed) bird sound.

Wife loves this 100%. Great gift (if I do say so myself).

One note ... after about 8 months, item stopped functioning properly.

Called Philips (great service) was told that item needed to be RESET (unplugged).

Keep this in mind (also reset clock & lamp) if you start to get problems.

Great Idea - unreliable product - don't buy it
by Rob S (1 out of 5 stars)
April 4, 2010

My second one of these has just failed after 3 months - the first one failed within a week and Amazon replaced it. Reading other reviews I am not alone in having these problems. The product is designed in such a way that the bulb cannot be replaced by the consumer.

On the good side it is a great way to wake up and it really does work - just not for long enough. Given the price don't waste your money on something that is clearly this unreliable - buy a different product with a replaceable bulb or stick with what you've got.

Would be a five, but light doesn't last long
by Troyus (3 out of 5 stars)

This is a great way to wake up. Slowly and softly. I loved this so much I bought my twin sister one for our birthday.

Her light blew within a week, mine blew within 3 months. It would be a great light, but it's a lot of money for a light that doesn't last long.

Failed in about 1 year

Liked it other than being unable to adjust the time it took to go from OFF to full brightness. It is fixed at 30 minutes which is good according to sleep experts but not good according to my spouse.

Wonderful wake-up

I have a new puppy and, so, in addition to needing to get up for work daily, I need to be up for our early morning walk. This light is a revelation. It gently illuminates, so that by the time the alarm starts to sound (it also ramps up gently), the room is light and bright -- even at times of the year when sunrise is very late! It makes getting up so much easier for people like me, who are not natural morning people. This is a great product that does what it says, and more as there are some extras to use if one wishes, and it is worth every penny.
