Poor design. Copper coils fail!!
by Poly Brane (1 out of 5 stars)

Don't waste good money on this! I bought one of these as a gift for my son. He played with it for about 3 days, then complained that the magnet no longer levitated. I took the cover off the base to see why, and discovered one of the four coils was damaged from too many magnet impacts. Thicker resin, or a protective covering for the coils might have prevented this (see attached Image). There is no point in getting a replacement unless the design of the product is changed. I am convinced from what I saw, and the the other reviews, that this thing will fail in less time than it takes to have it shipped.

coolest geek toy I have ever bought
by dpg (5 out of 5 stars)

I had an original Levitron back in the day and thought it was the ultimate geek toy. But in the era of floppy disks, it did not mix well with my hobby of computers. Also it was rather finicky to get spinning. I ended up selling it to avoid accidentally degaussing all my backup tapes and still regret getting rid of it.

With the mix of reviews on this device, I wasn't expecting much, but with the Levitron name, I had to give it a shot.

I have to say this is about the coolest geek toy I have ever bought. I love it. It works great. It works every time. I have had it running 24 hours a day for weeks now and the only time it stops working is power outages and if I bump the table too hard.

I currently have a DaYan Zhanchi speed cube rotating on it, and it brightens my day every time I glance at it or enter the room.

The corner LEDs do a great job of illuminating whatever is rotating above it.

I have run it for a few weeks on a Kill A Watt and it barely registers at 0.01 Watts. I would buy it again if it ever failed, which I don't really expect it to do.

Update. Given that the forces are entirely electromagnetic, I wondered if this thing would work while sitting on a metal table top. The experiment was short lived. The disk would not center itself at all and after a few seconds of trying, the entire device shut down and refused to power up again. I assumed I had killed it, similar to other reviews I had read.

So I pulled out my digital volt meter and checked the power supply. It was completely dead. I replaced the power supply with a comparable one (and moved it back to a wood top desk) and it has worked great ever since.

I guess the take away is: Don't try to use this on a metal surface and if it is dead, suspect the power wart.

don't buy it!

The first one worked for a few minutes, then shut off and wouldn't turn on. It was quickly replaced by Amazon. The second one lasted even less time and won't turn on. How disappointing as this was a gift.

Works Great!
by NYC reviewer (4 out of 5 stars)

On the first day, after thoroughly following the instructions, I was able to get the magnet to float within 5 seconds of my second try. After that, I've been able to get to to float flawlessly on the first. If it's taking you more than than a few seconds to get this working, you either haven't read the instructions carefully enough or perhaps you got a bad apple.

Each time the magnet slams down on the platform, I can see how it can eventually be damaged so be careful! The trick is to hold it firmly on the sides with both hands, bring it down from above and let the lights guide you. Do not let the magnet go if they're not all fully on and solid. The device will make a noise and certain lights will blink or turn off indicating it's not yet centered.

I've had everything floating on it from a bottle to a tangerine. It's really cool and a great conversation piece. Pretty simple to make anything spin or opt to keep it still if you want. I had an object spinning on it for 2 full nights in a row without issue. When turning it off, firmly remove the magnet first, otherwise it will slam down onto the platform.

I didn't receive a globe with the Levitron. My only other qualms are that it would have been nice if the platform cover was made out of brushed aluminum and if the lights could be turned off once you have the object floating. Also would be neat if they made a cordless/battery operated version for a cleaner look.

The best of the available levitation devices - sideways!
by S. Ludtke (5 out of 5 stars)

This was the levitation device I've always wanted. Not only is it smaller, and levitates higher than the previous generations, but, if you are careful, you can actually rotate it so the platform is vertical and the magnet is levitating horizontally from the surface! By concealing the platform, (I put it in a filled candy jar) you can have a magnet mysteriously floating unsupported about 1cm from the jar. Really freaks people out. The only trick is, to accomplish this you have to start with the platform horizontal, then VERY slowly and smoothly rotate it so it's vertical. If it falls, you have to start from scratch. Still, well worth the effort! :^) Note that I did have one of these die on me, but it was with a power outage, and was close to 2 years old at the time, so I don't feel bad about it.

PERFECT!! 3 MONTHS NOW!!
by Black B!rd (5 out of 5 stars)

4 days and counting, non-stop. No heat whatsoever off the machine. Make sure you if you don't get it balanced in about 5 seconds you back off and wait about 30 seconds and try again, never exceeding the 5 second rule. Also try and never let the magnet hit the base hard. It is hard to do the first time but be patient. It is worth it. I have a spinning ufo as a topper for my attack from mars pinball machine and it is bad! It floats perfectly and spins endlessly. I just stand there and look at it hanging in the air, spinning. And I believe it will truly hold the 13oz. stated. The item is priceless, and now only $44.00. Best deal of the year. I am so sorry so many people did not know the method that has to be followed. If you didn't, give it another try. It is worth it. Next up a miniature pinball as a topper for my theatre of magic pinball machine and a third just to play with. Levitate!

Update now 8 days and counting! Have 3 units going now. See my comment below for details.

OK NOW GOING ON 3 MONTHS WITH 3 RUNNING CONTINUOUSLY! Never any problem. Only when power goes off does it lose it levitation powers. I have a sr-71 metal model sitting on the one beside me that spins effortlessly all day all night. I frankly don't know how so many people got so many bad examples of this machine. I am 3 for 3 with them working flawlessly. I hate to say it but I believe it is probably user-related. I am lucky generally, but not that lucky. Never thought I would have anything like this, especially at this price. The only other thing I can't believe has been so well updated is the new hand held lasers. Cheap and powerful! See you in another 3 months, hopefully.

Sporadic quality?

Got this unit to display products at my retail store. It worked awesomely for 3 days and then died. Good news, got it through Amazon Prime and they shipped a replacement right away. Set it up and tested it out at home, worked fine. The next day when I took it to the store, it would not work at all. The magnet was impossible to center. And I tried for hours to get it to work, to no avail. Good news again, the awesome folks at Amazon sent me ANOTHER replacement right away.

The THIRD unit has been working great for a few weeks now - fingers crossed... The only issue is that every once in a while it overheats and the magnet slams down onto the base. It needs to be turned off to "rest" for a while, and then it's back in action. I've also noticed that whenever a cell phone is near it, the magnet fails and slams to the base. So of course I keep my cell phone at a good distance whenever it's on.

So when it works, it is super cool and awesome. Great fun to watch, and my customers are always mesmerized by it. But the technology seems to be inconsistent. If I could go back and reconsider my original purchase, I would probably have given it a pass. It's been a lot of headaches! But like I said, when it IS working, it's a cool little gadget.

Works Great !!!! A very much improved design.

I bought the first one with the globe, after a LEARNING PROCESS got it to work. This new Levitron with EZ Float technology works like a champ. My Invader's flying sauces is floating steady as a rock for over a month. The led centering lights make it really easy to levitate the magnet. I recommend placing something like thin cardboard or a piece of bubble wrap on the base unit until you get the hang of levitating the magnet. The best way to levitate an object I have found is to get the magnet levitating then carefully place your object on the magnet. The instructions say it will support up to 13 ounces, I know the Invader's ship does not weight that much. I tried my larger 12 inch diameter S2 flying saucer, it would not float that one brought the magnet down too low. I hope they will make one someday that will do two pounds I would buy that in a heartbeat.

Hard to setup, loud noise when it falls off center
by orangetangerine (2 out of 5 stars)
November 8, 2012

Setup is hard but not impossible. It can be definitely frustrating sometimes to find the sweet spot. The base gets hot if you can't get it placed within a minute or two. The manual booklet talks about how it will automatically shut off if it gets too hot.

If the floating base is disturbed from the sweet spot, it will make a loud noise as it crashes and clangs with the metal base. The floating base is always fighting the strong electric magnet underneath, so once you go off the sweet spot, it will clang to the rest of the base with a loud noise.

Items also need to be balanced exactly on their center of gravity to have any chance of them rotating. There is nothing inside the base that makes the platform rotate, you basically have to find the perfect spot and then just slightly push it to start a rotation.

The loud clang when it falls off center and hot base is what made me return this item.

Pros:
-Really cool idea and design
-Floats pretty high
-Nice lights

Cons:
-DO NOT TURN MAGNET UPSIDE DOWN. This will mess up the entire magnetic field needed to levitate the magnet and you cannot fix this yourself unless you know how to build your own and repair a defect in the magnetic field...

Overall:

I am a huge fan of ideas like this and I still really want to own this but not this exact product.
