Stop the worry

If you have ever owned a hound dog, mine's a basset, you know they wander as soon as you take your eyes off of them. After two previous hounds we got this for our puppy. As soon as he is out of site we can check the gps and see whether he nearby and is just hidden by a snow berm or heading up a deer trail.

GPS shows if he is moving quickly [dog running], Standing around [dog treeing], or sitting around for a long delay [dog sitting]; along with distance and direction, plus a map is you want to switch to that mode.

Yup it's expensive. Same price as years ago but with better graphics. And within a month it has been worth the cost in lieu of worrying and running in the wrong direction. We are kicking ourselves for not getting this for our other dogs.

Collar is lightweight and despite worries that the antennae and weight would be problematic, it doesn't seem to bother a 6-month old puppy. He just keeps on trackin'.

Exceptional tech! I highly recommend it!

I bought this not for hunting but for simply tracking my two dogs. I live on a 40 acre farm but my dogs love to roam around the entire 640 acre section. The Astro 320 works perfectly for tracking them over the whole section. My two dogs always stay together so one collar works for both, as they take turns wearing it. I can just press the button on the collar device and put it on one of them, then let them run. When I want to know where they are I turn on the handheld and it shows me. I've walked to them several times using the devices. The cost may seem high but there is no subscription. Once you purchase this set, you own it and can use it unlimited without additional costs. Exceptional tech! I highly recommend it.

Expensive, but worth it.

I actually use this in my High Power Rockets. I made a custom sled to screw into the holes where the transmitter clamps onto the dog collar. Even at high-velocity, the transmitter and handheld can keep up.

No more hours looking through corn fields or trying to figure out where exactly my rocket landed. I can just walk right to it.

The tracking can be downloaded to a computer and using Google Earth, you can see a 3D flight path of the rocket. Also you can see it from multiple angles. SWEET!

Awesome Peace of Mind For nonhunting hiker dog

I absolutely LOVE the Garmin Astro for the peace of mind it gives me when we go hiking with our dog off leash in the woods. The few times that my dog has run off after a deer or whatever have created a gutwrenching panic I don't want to endure. With the Garmin, I know where she is so I can enjoy my walk while she is enjoying her adventure!

How did I ever Coonhunt without it????

Have used a beep beep tracking system for the past 20 years or so. After using the Astro 320, I wouldn't even want to go out hunting if it was broken!

This thing is AWESOME!! If you get one, take the time to learn to download and use the Birdseye View. You can use the Satellite Picture to pick the easiest walk through the woods to your dogs, and heck, if they are treed in a big enough tree that's separate from other trees, you could actually see the tree they are treed in. Birdseye View is an extra $30 for a year, but it's so worth it. Get a 16gb memory card to put in the Astro, then download all your hunting areas onto the card within the year subscription. Once you download it, it's yours to keep....you don't need a subscription after the year unless you need to download another area.

This thing has made coon hunting with dogs so much easier, and a whole lot more fun than before. Would like to see an upgrade to the collars so that they could work longer on a charge. They'll only last a night or two of hunting when fully charged, so you still have to put the old beep beep tracking collar on also, in case you lose a dog for a few days. Once they ever get the use time on these collars up to a couple of weeks on a charge, it's bye bye to the old beep beep tracking collars.

Get it, you'll wonder how you ever hunted without it!

This is a great system. Would give it a five star if you could have a lot more internal memory and have a US map or even a county map with out having to buy cards or the subscription.

Love this tracking device. Saves time and money. Not running everywhere for dogs. Would buy again if something happened to this box ..a must for serious dog hunters. The support is very good. Too.

Easy to use, easy to track, great reception up to 2 miles away through bluffs, trees, and 400-500ft ravines. Only occasionally will lose signal for a few seconds, but gets right back on. Like being able to view either/or or both my track and dog's track. The sitting/on point/moving feature is not always accurate, but has been useful a few times for me as an outdoor adventurer that just wants to keep track of my dog.

Not for Pointing dog
by Patrick B Hadden (1 out of 5 stars)

I had used the Astro 220/DC30 and it worked OK. Would have liked it to be faster updating and sometimes it had a hard time pointing to the dog but it worked to walk in on a pointing dog that you could not see due to thick cover.

The Astro 320/DC40 does not work that way. I has the same problem finding and pointing to the dog. Maybe 70% of the time it is close to pointing the correct direction but it will not point the way to a pointing dog past 35yd. At that distance, as you walk closer to the dog it jumps to 99yds. Since you can't see the dog you think he has relocated to 99yards but he hasn't. He has stayed put at 35yds and you cannot move in closer and find the dog on point. It is useless for this purpose.

Talked to Garmin 3 times and they have not been able to solve the problem. I cannot recommend to a friend. It does not work for a pointing dog.

My son bought this gadget for his dogs to use while hunting. He absolutely loves this tracking device. His friend was also impressed with these collars so went and purchased his own set!
