DESIGNED TO BREAK. USER CANNOT CHANGE LIGHTBULB. UNACCEPTABLE
by Andrea M. Baker (1 out of 5 stars)
August 29, 2018

The manufacturer conveniently forgot to mention that you cannot replace the lightbulb. I am not interested in purchasing a product that is deigned to make you a repeat customer when the lightbulb breaks. The LED lightbulb will expire at some point. That is a fact. For environmental, moral and financial reasons designing a product that you the user cannot replace when it goes out is unacceptable. A new LED bulb is going to be a few dollars. If they seal the unit shut and make it to where you will just have to purchase a entire other unit is perfect for them to ensure the product will break and you will need to buy another one. Sorry I am not going to be part of purchasing something that contributes to a wasteful consumer market. I do not wish to throw this out into the landfill when the bulb goes out just to purchase another one. They say that for safety reasons the user cannot change the bulb. Sorry that excuse dosent fly with me.

This thing is perfect. I'm reading more
by Mimi 5000 (5 out of 5 stars)
February 2, 2018

This thing is a game changer! I got it because I got tired of being owned by my phone. It used to be the last thing I checked before going to bed, and the first thing I would check in the morning.

No more. Now I can leave the phone charging across the room (or in a handbag even. Who cares?) I can set this for the "sun to set" at 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes later. So I set it, and I get in bed and read a book for an hour. Then the "sun goes down" gradually, and I go to bed. Eight hours later, the "sun" starts coming up gradually. So gradually, that at the beginning, you don't even notice. And you can set sounds in addition to the "sunrise" effect: birds chirping, ocean waves, classical music, or FM radio (although why on Earth would you choose FM radio?)

You can set two different wake up "alarms". It doesn't even feel right to call them alarms, because it's not obnoxious or loud. It doesn't jolt you awake. You wake up gradually. This thing is perfect. I'm reading more, sleeping a lot better, and I don't even remember anymore to grab my phone to check social media in the mornings. In fact, sometimes I'll be at the office, and it'll be noon before I realize I left my phone in the car.

Drop the dependency on cell phones. It's ridiculous. We're like that movie, Wall E. Get this and improve your life and your quality of sleep.

Worked Amazing, Great Hardware - Awful Controls
by W. Gayther (4 out of 5 stars)
November 7, 2017

Waking Up: Amazing. 10am wakeup to 07:20am. And I don't wake up cranky as **** either. To be blunt, I got fired from a job because I wouldn't wake up and I was having no success waking up earlier no matter how much I wanted to - this thing is a career saver for me.

Hardware: Everything is done well.
- The night light puts out a soft sleepy light that's bright enough to read by but makes me sleepier rather than more awake like a lot of lights do.
- The radio speaker puts out soft sound that's relaxing to listen to (in contrast a lot of speakers put out tighter sharpened sound that's exciting and clear but not sleep inducing).
- The clock is amazingly non-disturbing. I didn't think anyone could make an led clock that didn't keep me awake when next to my bed, but this one does the trick. And I didn't even turn the contrast down.
- Sticky rubber keeps it from sliding around.
- It looks fine. Philips has a new model that...uh, it doesn't look good. This one looks fine next to the bed.

What's Bad:
- Controls are just awful, like other reviewers said. The buttons are located around the edges and it's difficult to find the one you're looking for. It took me a while to just figure out how to turn the alarm off. This is despite that it comes with a touch screen and menu. Everything is work to figure out how to do it, you really need the instructions that come with it. Despite this I'm not sending it back - you can figure out the controls - but as someone who does tech work all day it still took me 30 minutes to figure out how to do stuff on this.
- The sound part of the alarm turns itself off after 60 seconds. Wth.
- It's easy to hit the alarm control by accident which disables the alarm until you turn it on again.
- No line in or sd card slot for your own music.
- No automatic day/weekend switch, as the device doesn't even know the date.
- You can really really dim the clock but cannot turn it off completely. Not a problem for me, but I can see why it could be for other people.
- An electrical outage won't lose your alarms or settings, they're saved. And if the power comes back on it will resume the alarm still waking you up at the correct time. And the clock stays accurate through a power outage as well. However, if the power is out when your alarm it will skip it. Seems odd for such an expensive device.

My advice to Phillips is to stay with the physical design, but move all the physical controls to the menu/touchscreen. And fix the other annoyances I mentioned.

I'm so relieved to find a decent light that I'm keeping this and not returning it, but because of the horrid physical controls I cannot recommend it to other people. If it had good controls I would have bought it as a christmas present for other family members who also suffer from sleep issues, but I just can't see myself giving out something with such horrid controls.

The clock light doesn't dim. At first I thought that there was something wrong with the device but then I noticed that the brightness of the clock in all 4 brightness settings is very similar. I will have to put a sticker there.

I LOVE IT - the buttons are not a problem at all!
by Shell A. (5 out of 5 stars)
June 23, 2018

The stickers, markings all over, and overall complaints about the buttons are ridiculous! This alarm clock is freaking awesome! The book guides you through the setup, which is very easy. To snooze, you simply gently tap the front of the light. The light stays on but the sound turns off for 9 minutes. One is most likely awake when it's time to actually turn the unit off by pushing the button. The complaints about knocking it over or pushing the wrong button are absurd.

I just purchased this alarm clock and have used it all week. I set my own schedule at work and prefer to go in early so I can come home early. However, I also like three hours of awake time before I start work, so I get up between 3:30 and 4:00am. I used to set my alarm for 2:45 and snooze for 45 minutes. With this clock, I set it for 3:30 with a 30 minute sunrise simulation at a less intense brightness. Now, I am usually awake between 3:10 and 3:20 before the birds (in the clock) start chirping. So I already gained 30 minutes of sleep there. Next week, I will try to set it for 4:00 and gain another 30 minutes!

And about that sunrise simulation, I love that you can adjust the time from 20 to 40 minutes and the intensity as well. Full brightness is too bright for me. So I cut the brightness in half which is perfect. I wake when it's in the orange phase. I love that I don't need a startling sound to wake me up in the morning anymore. I love that I don't have to wake up in the pitch black of night anymore. This clock will be great for waking during Maine winters when the sun is out for less than 8 hours a day.

Also, for all of you before-sleep readers that fall asleep with your light on. Not anymore! I always fell asleep with my light on and would wake up 3 hours later to turn it off. I LOVE that when using this light at night it turns off after 30 minutes. I slept so well this last week.

If you're a snooze button abuser (like I was), get this clock! It truly allows you to wake when you're body is ready to - not because of some obnoxious noise.

A Few Differences From What I Read About This Product...... See Photos~
by MariamG (5 out of 5 stars)
January 21, 2016

Since this product has already been reviewed over sixteen hundred times and some quite thoroughly (thank you!), I'll keep this review short (for me). This has been one of our favorite purchases we own here from Amazon!

I'll mention a few things that I think vary from what I remember reading (and I read a TON or reviews, lol) and am uploading some photos so you can get a closer look and see what I mean...

First, I read some frustrations about not being able to set the time or alarms without accessing the buttons from above. I'm able to set the time and alarm times via the touch buttons on the front, below the time (see photo where buttons are lit). You can also use the upper buttons but don't have to for everything. The only thing you have to use the upper buttons for (in relation to setting alarms) is to turn an alarm off or on. For us, this isn't a daily event since we usually get up at the same times so no big deal.

Second, I was under the impression from the reviews that this thing would be kind of huge but I guess that depends on what you consider large, lol. I posted a photo with it next to some small alarm clocks and a bill to give you an idea of it's size. For us, it replaces both an alarm clock and a lamp on a nightstand so it's not too large.

Other than that, my wishes are few. I wish it included AM radio and didn't remember reading that it didn't (but I wasn't likely thinking I'd miss it). Sometimes I miss a little talk radio but other technology obviously suffices.

Like others mention, the buttons above are out of sight from the front. Call me crazy, lol, I used a Sharpie to mark lines where the buttons are. (There's no reason for my using different colors except that I added the red lines later and that's what I had handy.) Feeling around for the buttons when you want to turn the light or radio on, off, up or down, is just annoying. When I finally buy a yellow or orange Sharpie it'll look more like sun rays, haha... And rubbing alcohol rubs it right off anyway. The last two photos show all of the upper buttons, all the way around.

Lastly, the snooze sensitivity is too high for my preference. If I set down a cup of coffee near it, during the alarm time, it snoozes the radio off. I could change the settings for no snooze but I like waking up to radio and having the option of touching it for more quiet time. If I softly close a drawer below it, same thing, it snoozes.

I'm generally not this generous with 5 star ratings but overall I think the good heavily outweighs the bad and I definitely love this product. We've had ours for 5 months without problems but I'll update this review if anything changes. We live in the grey Seattle area and the sunshine this thing brings us makes it the best alarm we've owned. Smile. Buy with confidence. Hope this is helpful!

I agree with the positives and negatives, but the negatives won
by Paula (1 out of 5 stars)
August 30, 2017

I agree with all of the positive and all of the negative pointed out in reviews. The negatives won, though, and I just returned this. It is very nice to wake up to what feels like a natural sunrise. But this has a whole lot of weird, inexcusable (for something this expensive) problems. It is very difficult to navigate all of the buttons, given their placement, the fact that they're small and unobtrusive, and the fact that it's way too easy to send this almost-round light rolling across the nightstand when I press a button. The upshot is that the pleasantness of the light is completely overwhelmed by the frustration of dealing with the buttons. I also don't understand why the clock doesn't sync itself to the right time and timezone or have a battery backup - those features are no-brainers even in much cheaper products these days. I'd also add that making this light round was a cute gimmick - it feels a little like a sun sitting on my nightstand - but the size and shape make it hard to reach anything else on my nightstand.

by Ashley (5 out of 5 stars)

I have owned this alarm for two and a half years and still very much enjoy it. I find it is most helpful in the winter, when it is still dark when I wake up, but it is a nice alarm clock year round.

There was a time when I stopped using the sound feature and just used the light feature combined with my phone alarm because I got tired of the available alarm sounds. However, I soon recalled the radio setting and have come to enjoy that.

The fact that the snooze works by just tapping the front of the lamp is also really nice. I really like that it turns the sound off but not the light.

I also really enjoy it as a lamp at night since the brightness is completely adjustable. I don't tend to use the sunset setting, however. But I like to have a dim bedside lamp while reading before going to sleep.

When I first got the alarm it was completely magical. I would wake up before the light was even completely on. I raved about it for weeks. Over time that effect has faded and I tend to not wake up until it is all the way on. But it has still improved my wake up routine dramatically.

Combined with my breville tea maker that automatically brews me a pot of tea every morning....I am a bit closer to being a morning person. :)

Basically works but could be so much better.
by EWG76 (3 out of 5 stars)
June 29, 2018

I wish I could give 2.5 stars. It's not the worst but it could be SO much better with some easy tweaks

Pros:

The light is nice and yellow. I was afraid it would be blue but it's not at all.

The shift in light on dawn or dusk simulation is subtle not 'jerky'.

There are a lot of light levels - 20 different ones

It looks reasonably expensive (I've had some light alarms that looked cheaply made)

It gets surprisingly good radio reception

Despite being very light sensitive, I can actually fall asleep despite the soft amber numbers on the face of this thing - although I'd rather if I could turn the numbers off when I slept. I think the soft amber color is soothing - I actually travel with blackout sticks to block out LEDs in hotels.

Cons:

WTF is with the TINY and oddly placed buttons? This alarm is good for the person who hits snooze repeatedly and needs to be forced into alertness with a puzzle. The problem is I wake up pretty alert due to the dawn simulation but I find it easy to accidentally hit snooze and hard to turn off the alarm (the instructions aren't as clear as I'd like on this area). THE WHOLE POINT OF A LIGHT ALARM IS YOU WAKE UP AND DON'T NEED TO HIT SNOOZE BUT THE ENTIRE FAVE IS A SNOOZE BUTTON. So frequently I'll be in the shower or eating breakfast and hear the alarm go off again because it's not clear if I correctly turned it off. The buttons are small and rounded so I have to really lean in and look closely.

One of the bird sounds has the world's most annoying cuckoo. I'd love to be able to do no alarm sound but I don't think I can.

The instructions leave a lot to be desired.

I gave this 3 stars since it DOES help me wake up with light and wind down at night but if I could meet the product designers I'd really like to ask them what the hell they were thinking to make a beautiful but not user friendly product

Love this light! Edited: broke right outside of warranty
by Animal chick (1 out of 5 stars)
February 6, 2018

Edit: I DID really love this light, but it broke right after the end of the manufacturer's warranty, and now its a pile of junk. It started making odd clicking noises at hours, not turning on when it was set to, and not turning on to full brightness during alarm. The search continues for a good sunrise light.

I really love this light. I was concerned about the shape of it and the fact that the clock face didn't turn off. I decided to still give it a try.

I think it's worth the price. The light is very pleasant and I enjoy that it has orange and yellow tones as well. Some people said the controls were confusing and difficult to use in the dark, but I haven't had any problems with it.

The bird sounds it has are pleasant, and nice to wake up to. I really like the sunset feature as well. Lastly, it seems like times and settings are more adjustable on this than other cheaper lights.
