Brings me back to the 60's! Awesome!
by JimE (5 out of 5 stars)

This maker is the best non-electronic toy on the market! Although it kinda is as you need to plug it in and it talks to you, guiding you thru the steps. Reminds me of the old Mattel Strange Change Machine, Incredible Edibles or Creepy Crawlers. They tried to remake these great toys of the past with lamo politically correct versions that had whimpy light bulbs and non-toxic material and just ruined them.

But this one hits the mark! There is a real heating element in these insulated by the case so you feel no real heat. (AKA- no chance to get burnt) The wax sticks are not really wax as I was dreading but some kind of low heat soluble polymer. Yet no real smell when cooking them up. When the do come out you really have to stick your nose up to the cars to smell them - and they smell good ! I mean these things look like something you would buy in a store, not make at home! Really professional!

The first car came out a solid color but addition cars have a tie dye look at the very end, so if you do it right you can pick a complimentary color for next in line. As far as breaking and sticking I had none of those problems, but I did supervise as my daughter jammed a stick in the wrong way and trying to force the molds in the wrong way. As long as you take your time and do it correctly it works perfectly!

We spent some time figuring out why the door wouldn't close. It says "close door" and "push strait button". But it doesn't tell u you need to hold the door closed while you push the start button to lock it. After that we just went to town. Really cool and fun! I had to kind of bring it out and say let's try this to get my daughter interested as she hasn't opened it from Christmas. But once she saw it working she couldn't get enough. Now I guess I'm on the hook for refills and additional molds. Lol. But I love I it as much as my 10 year old.

My boys LOVED it, but zero durability...it broke the first day.

My boys LOVED this car maker. They learned all about injection molding and had a fabulous time Christmas morning making cars. They don't actually get to do too much of the process because the maker does most of it, but they didn't mind at all. This was all they wanted to do on Christmas morning...until it BROKE not once, but twice. My son learned that if you don't load the wax sticks point first, two wax points will end up touching inside the first chamber and slip off of each other when you're trying to press the sticks in. This creates a jam of two sticks stuck in the first chamber and no way to push them into the melting chamber. The jam occurred where you can't easily access the sticks, so it took a long time for my engineer husband to fix the problem. Sure, my son should have loaded the wax with the point first, but this is a toy for kids--Mattel should have anticipated things like wax jams would happen and at least create parental access to the chamber or at least make it harder for a wax jam to occur. The wax sticks have tiny tips--it really isn't apparent the tip should go in first. Lesson learned.

So, the first jam was repaired by my handy husband who designs things for a living. My kids proceeded to make a half dozen more cars when the car maker broke...again. Who knows what's wrong with it this time. My husband says he'll look at it later because the last repair sucked up an afternoon. This toy should be more durable. I don't spend $40 anticipating a toy will last an afternoon. I was also lucky enough to find wax refills, so I dumped $25 on those, plus $10 on another mold set. In total, I spent $75 on a toy that lasted a day. Not good, Mattel.

Also, Amazon won't let me return the car maker because I purchased it at the end of October from their Holiday Toy List for my kids for Christmas. What that Holiday Toy List didn't mention was that Amazon's Christmas return policy of a January 31 return deadline didn't start until November 1st. So even though I purchased the item from their Holiday Toy List that was out at the end of October and didn't give the toy to my kids until Christmas, I am unable to return it because 30 days has passed from my purchase date. Thanks, Amazon.

Fun, but slow and noisy.
by J. Barron (4 out of 5 stars)

I bought this as a Christmas present after he viewed a kid on YouTube using this product. It was a fantastic reaction when he opened the gift - but I have to say the actual use is... OK. I mean it's neat that he can make his own cars, but there are a couple of things that made it lose it's wonder pretty quickly for my son. For one is the length of time it takes to melt the wax. No kid s going to sit around for the 10 minutes to melt and 6 minutes to cool - but the product is constantly, noisily making sounds and beeping and repeating phrases over and over in some weird attempt to keep the kid engaged. Let it go - and let the child play while it does it's non-action filled thing.

Also, the tool to "trim" the wax is very dull- for safety sure. But it's rather ineffective in its purpose. The poker part, to push the wax out of the mold, is also fairly ineffective.

I do still give it a four star review though- there are ways around those minor issues, and accepting that it's going to be annoyingly noisy (even to my son) while spending large swathes of time doing nothing visually interesting - it's still cool to have these mixed color cars he made himself.

It works great but have another activity ready.

Its pretty much a no mess toy. It works well but have another game ready to go when you start using this. Plug it in, load the refills and put the molds in place. Now you have about 7 minutes to listen to the music/faux car making sounds the machine makes while you play with another game with your kids. After the 7 minutes the machine tells you to pull down the handle which takes about 2 seconds. After that wait for the 8-10 minute cool down where you once again listen to the sounds of the machine. When it tells you to remove the mold it is pretty simple to remove. Once removed you have to scrape tiny bits of excess off but there is really no mess. Each stick makes almost 2 cars. Mine came preloaded with a purple stick so the first car was completely purple and the second was mostly purple with a tiny bit of blue from the stick my son put in. The 3rd car had a tiny bit of purple (somehow left over from the first stick), was mostly blue, and had a tiny bit of the red that was loaded next. Basically when you put a stick in your stuck with that color for 2 cars. Hopefully the refill sticks/molds/chassis' come down in price (currently the cheapest I've seen is $10-11 to make 2 more cars)

Nice Product

This item was requested by my son for Christmas. He was very excited to get it and began immediately making cars. Of course by the end of the first day he had used up all of his wax sticks and was asking for more. The refill packages at the time I was looking were very hard to find and very overpriced for what is essentially a naked crayon stick. I did buy some refills and he does still play with the toy.

It takes a long time to make a car. The toy must heat the wax for several minutes then the child must inject the wax into the mold at which time it must sit again for several minutes while the wax cools enough to be removed from the mold.

The entire time it is heating and cooling the product plays a phrase repeatedly and loudly. You cannot stop it. It gets quite annoying. I can see many kids not liking the long waits and many parents not liking the loud noise.

I don't see this as being a product that has a long life in our house due to interest fading pretty quickly. It is well made and should last for a long time without breaking. I secretly hope it breaks so I don't have to listen to it anymore!!

High Quality Product Producing High Quality Parts Enjoyed by 4 & 8 YO Both
by Ebeck (5 out of 5 stars)
January 22, 2015

Didn't know whether this would be a cheap promotional toy that didn't do so well in application - but this is not only quality and sturdy, but the kids are addicted to using it. They've set up "shop" and take "orders" to make new body types. The colors kind of blend together (from one stick to the next) so if you are adamant about having purely one color, you'll need to put two sticks back to back that are the same color. The results are incredible - they are quality pieces of plastic that the kids actually got to make themselves. The plastic is strong and durable - absolutely NOT what I would expect from something that lets a child make it. My 4yo & 8yo both love & use this - though it does require parental supervision. My 8yo is able to do it on his own now after having watched me do it with him a few times, and I'm absolutely confident in his use of it. My 4yo probably could do it by himself (as far as the directions go, he gets it & could replicate it) but I just don't allow him to given the electricity and heat it produces (internally - you don't touch anything hot....IF you follow the directions!)

Hot Whells Car Maker Playset
by Minnie Mouse (5 out of 5 stars)
October 6, 2014

This is a really fun toy for children and allows to them be creative. The only disadvantage of the purchase is the money needed to continually use the Hot Wheel Car Maker. You will need to continually purchase the mold materials to keep making cars. I am giving this a 5 star because I feel it allows children to do something and be creative, rather just go out and grab a hot wheel off the store shelves. They will get the joy of making them by choosing the car style, the color and decorations. My child loves this! Amazon has good prices and options for extra material and molds to use with the Car Maker, so that really helps.I have no regrets buying this even though it's more than I would normally pay for a child's hot wheel and would recommend to anyone with children of age to play with hot wheels. This is something all children would love to play with, even girls. It's just that fun! My entire family played with it!

Kid loves it... Parents, not so much...

Would it have been so hard to install either a volume control or the option to TURN OFF THE ANNOYING MUSIC????

Our 6 year old LOVES this thing and it is a neat toy. However, after about 5 minutes, you're ready to throw it across the room because of the repetitive (and I might add obnoxious) 'music'. If the sound wasn't necessary to walk the kiddo through when to pull the handle, etc., I would be tempted to figure out how to cut the wires to the speaker.

Also, there really needs to be a way to reclaim the excess and unused 'wax'. There is a LOT of waste generated with each car and with the cost of replacements, there really should be a way to recycle the material rather than throw it away. It would even be nice to melt down 'finished' cars so that the material can be used again. Especially when a car breaks as your trying to remove it from the mold. Additionally, the tool provided to help remove the wax should either be metal or at the very least a LOT stronger than the cheap plastic it's made of. Ours bent out of shape after the first couple of times using it.

The ONLY reason this gets 3 stars is because the kiddo really does love it.

Fun toy, takes a little patience, but kids like it!

My son received this for Christmas and we finally got it out and used it today. First car broke when trying to get it out the mold...because I didn't fully read the instructions! TOTALLY my fault. When I used the removal tool as I was supposed to, the car dislodged easily and in tact. It does take awhile...several minutes to melt the plastic, then another several minutes to cool the plastic, before removing the mold. But that is expected when you're melting plastic, right? :) No fumes came from the process which I was pleasantly surprised with. My son (5) and daughter (8) have been intrigued with this thing all afternoon. You'll definitely need refill packs if you want more than three cars (only three car bases come with the car maker) but with that said, the different molds can be interchanged on the three car bases. I would recommend this item and think we will get a lot of use out of it!

READ THE DIRECTIONS, You'll be Fine!
by SnoozeBob (5 out of 5 stars)
December 28, 2014

Christmas morning, two adult males and one 8-year-old male attacked the Hot Wheels Car Maker. "Directions? What directions?" After several wrong insertions of the mold, upside down wax stick penetrations and partially filled molds -- the car maker finally hit its stride and cranked out several pretty nice little cars. Now the 8-year-old whizzes through the process by himself. The sounds can get irritating and cannot be turned off. And due to user error in our case... our cars come out marbleized or tie-died -- not one solid color (still cool looking though). I would definitely buy this again -- but read the directions and/or watch some of the videos available online (hotwheels.com or YouTube) so you know what to expect before actual operation.
