I've bought an extensive list of "smart home" products. Echos, Dots and Wands, SmartThings, Switches, Lights, Sensors, Nest Thermostat, Cameras, etc. Out of all of the devices I've purchased this one has been a complete disappointment. This company has gone out of its way to be as non-connected to other services and systems as possible. They are charging fees for connectivity that is industry standard to provide for free. They've disabled API connectivity so that systems like SmartThings are not able to automate and integrate the garage door opener. The made empty promises about integration and connectivity on public forums for two years. They've forced themselves into an island of single purpose operation in my home and I'll be replacing this shortly. I fought for 18 months to keep this working in my automated home but the time has come to either sell this pile of junk on eBay, donate it to a friend that doesn't care that the product is only good for opening and closing the garage door on its own or just toss it in the trash. I will never intentionally buy another Chamberlain product and I recommend you avoid this product unless your needs are very limited. It is NOT a true smart home solution.

Solid and can only get better

First I've read many reviews before buying. I was hesitant (read the negative reviews), but decided to try anyhow because this seems to be the best product for non-chamberlain/liftmaster products (by the way if you have chamberlain/liftmaster consider yourself lucky as that is the best product i've ever experienced; plus they have a separate more functional MyQ product).

DISPELLING RUMORS:
- this does support WPA2 Personal (all forms AES, TKIP, AES+TKIP); also WEP and WPA (but I strongly recommend WPA2-AES)
- this does work with my Genie Pro Model 1024 garage door opener
- this product does update frequently (so issues seem to be taken seriously)
- this product does connect to my router without difficulty (I have buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH with DD-WRT)
- ipad works with the iphone app
- android app also works (I have android v4.3)
- Registration with full address is completely optional now (even to set timezone as one reviewer complained about in past)

FEW KEY WEB LINKS:

INSTALLATION TIPS:
- install door detector on garage door (make sure top facing up; I strongly recommend screwing it in)
- plug wifi hub into any electrical socket, you can install it in the ceiling next to the garage door opener but I chose not to (note there is an obvious safety reason to install in your garage but my garage door has enough safety features)
- interestingly this wifi hub can serve as a "router" for setup purposes or a "wifi hub" for usage purposes. to setup you essentially are connecting to it as if it were an open wifi network
- wifi hub has 3 buttons (settings, #1, #2) I have no clue what #1 and #2 do... (see comment below)
- initially blue light should be blinking, this means it is ready to setup connection to your router (if you don't see this hold the settings button down until blue starts blinking)
- do android device setup even if iphone/ipad (iphone bluetooth/wifi thing didn't work for me). make sure blue light blinking. use your wifi to connect to the open wifi network called MyQ-XXX device (XXX is last 3 of your serial #). goto on your web browser (setup.myqdevice.com). The rest should be self explanatory.
- as another reviewer pointed out, there is a rediculously long list of supported openers, pick wisely
- solid green means it worked and is now serving as a wifi hub and connected to your real router.
- next is to link the door detector and garage door opener to the wifi hub and setup alerts
- for this you will need to the website (mychamberlain.com) or the iphone/android free app (search MyQ Chamberlain)
- The app is easier to use to setup door detector and garage door opener
- The website is easier to setup alerts (android app can't setup alerts after open X min for some reason)
- Test as much as you want

USAGE TIPS:
- note the wifi hub will flash light and beep loudly if you close the door using the app/web
- this does not auto-close after set time period (PLEASE add this feature!)
- alerts available? (door open/close, door open for X minutes, light turns on/off)
- alerts can be set to trigger all times/days; certain days of week; certain times of day
- it can email and/or notification alert your smartphone/tablet
- all alert triggers are stored for later review
- I've set mine to alert every minute from 5-10 to ensure I don't miss the alert by accident
- the smartphone app has option of using security 4 digit pin instead of email/pw for login/function access.
- yes you can set it up to alert multiple smartphone/tablets simultaneously

DOOR DETECTOR BATTERY:
- 1x lithium coin CR2450 (these are fairly cheap on amazon)
- very easy to access
- I have no clue about battery life.... (will update when the time comes... also see comment below)

RELIABILITY (UPDATE):

I set it from the beginning to email me with every open/close to test its reliability. I've had it for a bit now and initially I had the wifi hub in my kitchen actually. I think either the distance was too far from the door detector or the door detector was not screwed on tightly enough. I was getting initially random alerts that the door was open when it wasn't and vice versa. Small chance it was actually opened but i doubt it. I fixed both issues by tightening the screws on the door detector and moving the wifi hub into my mudroom. Since then I have had 100% reliability. I haven't experienced the router disconnects or other problems I've seen other users have. My wifi bar in my garage is barely 1-2 on my cell phone (part of the reason i'm using mudroom for the wifi hub).

will update as needed.

COST (UPDATE):

currently 130$, kind of pricey for just a monitor but i guess it has a monopoly on the market for now until other manufacturers catch up.

Alternatives you can consider...
- schlage electronic keypad deadbolt (approx 100$) -- this is awesome for any door but makes locking/unlocking the door from garage into your house easier. i strongly recommend this one which has a manual deadbolt motion after you enter the right electronic key instead of the motorized deadbolt motion as sometimes the deadbolt isn't positioned perfectly to close and you have to wiggle the door a bit. the motorized one will just fail. great by the way for a front/side door. this won't protect your garage from theft but it will prevent people from getting into your house thru an open garage.
- a new chamberlain garage door opener (example WD962KEV (approx 243$, now 203$ with father's day discount) -- this has myQ built in with the added feature that it can auto-close the door after a certain time without your intervention. also i've had one before with my prior house and the buttons are much more responsive than Genie. also the outdoor keypad works way better and can be closed without entering a key combination (makes sense as it allows you to close quickly from outside or let neighbors close for you without knowing combo). Honestly if i had the father's day discount i would have just upgraded my entire garage door opener.

OVERALL:

I'm very impressed with this device thus far. Strongly recommend for now. I've left my garage door open a few times every year by mistake. With thefts and home breeches in our area, this gives much peace of mind. Thank you Chamberlain.

Will update if things change.

charges a monthly fee for IFTTT integration
by JBender (2 out of 5 stars)
September 5, 2017

just received, easy to set up, this was second brand I tried, will stick with this one

the reason only 3 stars, you can not set up multiple users, everyone has to use your email and password

they say working on adding this feature back in Jan 2017, when\if they do I will up it to 5 stars

also they charge a monthly fee for IFTTT integration

using for a couple days now, has worked fine, no issues so far, but the app needs a few thing, no way to see how much battery charge left in sensor, no way to see in app how strong your wifi signal is, they really need to add those, hopefully the device will send me an alert when battery low, time will tell

edit : lost network, app still says connected and door open, but it's closed, would of expected it to say can't connect or something, but nope, the app acts like all is good even though it can't connect

edit : 9-3-2018 - they still charge a monthly fee for IFTTT, everyone in the household still needs to share the same email\password to access the system

edit 12-17-2018 - they still charge a monthly fee for IFTTT, everyone in the household still needs to share the same email\password to access the system

It's great... when it works
by JHL (1 out of 5 stars)
March 27, 2017

It's so glitchy. It's great when it works, but sometimes it will notify me that the garage has been opened for a few minutes and then will go back to closed on its own. This creates a lot of headache when I'm away from the house and is very distracting. On a few occasions, I received the 'garage has been opened' notification and went back home to find it closed. Extremely frustrating.

If it appears open, I'll press the button in the app to close it, then it will actually open and I will have to either close it again or the garage door will stop responding because of 'too many failed attempts' leaving the garage door wide open with no one home. Really, really frustrating.

Also, the Chamberlain people are impossible to get a hold of.

DON'T! Huge Security Risk - MyQ opens the door randomly with NO notification
by T. Olson (1 out of 5 stars)
February 15, 2018

This product is straight up dangerous to own - exposes your garage and home to intruders.

I've had for about 1 year and now I'm experiencing random "phantom" openings during the day and the night.

Even worse, the phantom openings do not always register on the app, so I receive no notification the door even opened. I've come home to find it opened while I was at work and I've left for the office to find it opened while I was sleeping!

Imagine if this were to happen while on vacation??!!

Dozens of people are reporting the exact same problem on Chamberlain's customer support website.
The phantom openings ONLY happen when their MyQ is plugged in.
The problem stops when they unplug their MyQ.

Chamberlain support tells everyone the same BS reasons - claiming

a) the neighbor's remote just happens to have the identical security settings and exact same sequence of random codes as your opened is expecting (1 in multi-million chance)

b) your existing wall controller mysteriously "shorted' after you bought the MyQ

c) some other equally dubious and improbable reason.

Great if you live alone and want to open/close garage door from your phone. App is TERRIBLE
by Pickygrrrl (1 out of 5 stars)
January 31, 2018

I had high hopes for this opener, based on what it claims to do, but in practice, it's not much better than the old fashioned remote that came with the garage door opener 20 years ago. I give it 1 star because I can open and close the garage door from my phone and check its status remotely, which I cannot do with the old remote. Also, installation was easy. I have a few HUGE complaints about the app that are dealbreakers, however.
1. The app/account setup is a disaster. It's like they had high school summer interns design it. There is one master account with username/pwd and up to two more people can install the app on their phone, but they have to use the master account holder's username/pwd to do this. I would venture to guess that the majority of people with garages are households with more than one person/garage door user. So why wouldn't the app be designed for independent use by multiple users? Set it up so there is one master/admin account with Chamberlain and that administrator designates other users. This way, 2 parents and maybe even their children could all have access to the garage door...perhaps even with different levels of access/control. And why the limit of 3 users? If it can allow 3 users, it should be able to allow any number beyond that. This is supremely frustrating because if one user adds and alert, the alerts go to all of the users. Totally unnecessary - my 16 year old at school doesn't need to be alerted when I accidentally leave the garage door open in the morning, and potentially confusing with multiple people trying to rectify the situation that caused the alert to trigger. We should all be able to choose what alerts we want to get, independently. This is a complete and utter FAIL for the developers.
2. I purchased this because my kids often leave the garage door open at night and I often forget to check it before going to bed. So I wanted an alert that told me if the door status was equal to "open" for more than a certain length of time after 7 pm, to minimize the chances of my family being hacked to death by an axe murderer who has gained entry to the house via our open garage while we sleep. This product advertised that this was a functionality. And the way the alert setup in the app reads, it will do what you think. "Send me an alert when the garage door is open for longer than 15 minutes from 7 pm to 11:59 pm." What it does is notify you if the door is *opened* after 7 pm and then remains open for that length of time. It does not check the status of the door after 7 pm (eg, if someone had opened it at 3:30 and left it open). It is looking for an activity. Granted, I can always check the app at 7 pm and see if it's open. But if I could remember to do that, I could remember to walk over to the garage and check. I bought this to make my life easier and it doesn't function as advertised. If you research, you'll find that they've been promising to work on this for years now. As I explained above, the way the rules are written in the app implies that this is how they intended for it to work. Another complete and utter design fail.
3. You have to pay for IFTTT integration. So you've already shelled out $99 to get a product whose controlling app is poorly designed/implemented and if you want to make it work how you want, you have to pay them even more. It's infuriating.

This makes me so mad because this product has so much potential, which the manufacturer clearly seemed to envision, but it seems like they just completely failed at implementing it. What we have is a product that basically lets your phone stand in for a really long distance clicker.

This could be a great product if Chamberlain would only focus on the user experience in their app
by Lloyd (1 out of 5 stars)
September 25, 2017

Seriously Chamberlain you have one job: open and close my garage door, yet you do this correctly maybe 50% of the time.

Instead you:
* Fail to log me in asking that my user name and password be entered to gain access to the program.
* Ask for my Touch ID on my iPhone even though I just used it to log into my phone 10 second prior (thanks for finally fixing this one).
* Fail to connect to the server with the spinning circle of annoyance (I have both WiFi & 4 bars of cell service).
* Bring up the screen asking me to rate the app before allowing me to open my garage door (here's your rating, hope you enjoy it).
* Bring up an advertising screen with your latest thing available requiring me to hit a very tiny "x" to clear it off so I can open my garage door.
* Refuse to operate the door because the battery in the sensor is dead - really? The button in my car opens and closes the garage door EVERY TIME without a sensor. (buy replacement CR2450 batteries with your MyQ or you will have to wait a week for your opener to work while the batteries are shipped).

The MyQ concept is great, the execution is beyond poor, but this can be fixed by hiring software engineers & management that focus on the user experience & fix the app.

Great idea, poor execution

Well, I spent about a couple of hours trying to get this to work. First thing is, there was supposed to be a battery protection strip which you are to remove before continuing. There was no strip. The instruction in the included booklet are not correct. I downloaded the app and it gave different instructions. followed them and when complete, the garage door opened. however it was stuck in monitor mode and could not close the door. The sensor was not syncing to the wifi module. I bought another battery thinking that was the problem, nope. The app is poorly designed. Not any troubleshooting help. So I sent it back and got a refund. I really wish it was less complicated, I just wanted to use my phone as a garage door remote. Like I said, its a great idea, but it just doesn't work very well. or at least the on I got didn't. I am also wondering if the unit I received was a returned item, since the battery protection strip was missing.

Glitch in the system caused us to fear our device had been hacked.
by Emily,Top Contributor: Pets (3 out of 5 stars)
December 26, 2017

I bought this device a while ago and have had it installed for maybe 2 months or so. Installation was pretty painless.

When I first installed this I was super excited because I am forgetful and have to turn around more than I'd like to admit to check if I have closed my garage door. This device made it so easy to check and easy to open the garage for people when I am 30+ miles away (at work) so someone can get into my house when needed...

Unfortunately, a few weeks ago both my husband and I had left for work and I get a notification 40 minutes after leaving my house that my garage door had been opened.... I checked the log and it showed it had been opened 3 times that morning, 1 when my husband left, 1 when I left, and 1 when this magical ghost opened it. Imagine the extreme fear and panic both my husband and I felt when we saw the notification. We didn't know if it was just a glitch or if someone had hacked the account and broke into our house.... and I have dogs so I was terrified that if it was a break in that something might happen to them (cause honestly I can replace my stuff but not my dogs so material things were not my concern).

It took my husband 15 minutes to get to our house, the garage stayed open for 11 minutes. To this day we have no idea what caused it to open but the dogs were undisturbed when he arrived which leads us to believe it was a malfunction. We immediately unplugged the device as we got LUCKY he could leave work that day and that he was only 15 mins away (normally we are each and hour or more).

In order to continue using this device I will need to install cameras so that I can actually SEE if the door is open or if it is a glitch. Obviously buying the additional cameras is not ideal... had this device not caused a panic attack I would have given this 5 stars. Being able to open and close from anywhere is a great feature so I want to continue to use it for that reason but definitely not happy about my experience.

Piece of garbage...creates more headaches than it solves.
by Momar (1 out of 5 stars)
September 24, 2017

Update 2 years out: This is a piece of garbage. It worked haphazardly and recently, it says the door is open when door is actually closed, DEFINITELY DOES NOT GIVE YOU A PIECE OF MIND.

Update, 1 month after installation: The system does not work. I re-set the entire system once, then I continue to get error messages any time I try to open the garage door from iphone, see pics. Essentially, it works 10% of the time and I get error messages 90% of the time. Wifi & connectivity are working fine. I had high hopes for this product, but it has failed miserably.

Initial Review: I just installed and it works as advertised. Follow the instructions for installation and it works like a charm. Set-up is pretty easy and I was able to get this going in about 5 minutes. Overall, from start to finish about 20 minutes for installation and set-up.

I have an Overhead Garage Door, likely 15-20 years old and this worked. Other openers continue to work once after this was installed.

Lastly, thanks to other reviewers who reviewed this product, especially those who mentioned Overhead which gave me the confidence to buy this product.
