I bought mine on Aug 10 and on Sep 30 all Trakdots became non functional as they are 2G and all major cells stopped supporting.

They knew this was likely to happen but didn't warn any buyers. DONT BUY

when purchasing a device like the Trakdot
by Robert K. Jenney (1 out of 5 stars)
September 20, 2015

We purchased two of these for a trip from Boston to Madrid. Since I was taking a very expensive bicycle, I really wanted the peace of mind to know if it had made the trip with us... Or not.

I tested the two Trakdot's we purchased over the two weeks preceding our trip. There were varying results but, knowing these are designed for airline travel and set to notify the user when in proximity of an airport, we flew with them anyway versus returning them for a refund before the trip.

Other than a single notification when driving to the airport, from only one of the two Trakdot's, they have been silent. And we've been in Madrid for 24 hours.

What a person hopes, when purchasing a device like the Trakdot, is that they are purchaing peace if mind. That the device will allow them to travel in comfort knowing where their luggage is. (Or isn't)

On this front, the Trakdot failed miserably. I was lucky that my bike made the trip with me but, had it gone missing, I would have no way of knowing where it was... Which is the whole point of having a luggage tracking device.

I'm giving it one star because that's the minimum for a review. But, it doesn't deserve even that one.

This company is out of business

The devices worked great for several years but there was a change and these no longer can access a signal and are therefore, dead. The company will not answer phone calls or emails and I paid for lifetime subscription use on my device. Isn't it fraud to continue to sell the product (only through Amazon) when the devices no longer work?

Worked perfectly on an international trip to China w/multiple stops
by Nicholas Parker,Top Contributor: Smart Home (5 out of 5 stars)
May 25, 2015

In May 2015, I went on an adventure to China and the two Trakdots worked as advertised notifying me that my bags had arrived at LAX, Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, back at Beijing, back at LAX then back at Phoenix. I got notifications via the Trakdot app, text message and two email addresses. The texts and app notifications usually came in about 10-15 minutes after we landed.

Having read concerns about batteries here in these reviews, I replaced the batteries prior to almost every leg of the trip. The batteries never dropped below "good." On the Shanghai>Beijing>LAX segment, the bags were checked through so the Trakdots had to last for about 20 hours and they did! I got notifications at all three airports.

HERE'S A TIP. I found the batteries hard to remove so I wrapped scotch tape around one end of the batteries to create a sort of pull tab to yank the batteries out. I attached a picture to this review. Made an immense difference.

One downside: Bluetooth tracking failed. It worked fine on my Android phone at first but they updated the app and it caused the app to crash when I tried to use the bluetooth function. I am still giving this 5 stars because it performed its primary function very well and I assume they will fix the app sometime soon so Bluetooth works.

Another tip: To use the bluetooth feature, you need to take a paperclip and press the little button inside the Trakdot through the little hole near the power button. For some reason, this was not documented with my Trakdot, found it on the web. When you press the little button, the Trakdot light will light up blue. You then pair it with your phone. Once its paired, you need to pair it using the Trakdot app too. After that, you should be able to get a reading of when your bag is within Bluetooth range.

Make sure you read the web site FAQ so you understand how to operate the button and read the status lights.

A final tip: Some have said opening the Trakdot up to replace the batteries is difficult. Just lift the brown outer shell so it rises above the button and slide the orange unit out. Pressing the button down to get it under the brown case just doesn't work. Lifting up on the brown case does.

Satisfied.

FYI.... Here's an example email you get:

Your Trakdot device LUGGAGE1 is indicating its location is within the area of Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK). If this is a final destination of a flight you are on, proceed to baggage claim to pick up your luggage. If you are at your final destination, but it is not the location of your Trakdot luggage, then proceed to your carrier's Baggage Claim Office and arrange for the luggage to be sent to you from Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK).

Battery: Good.

I was so hopeful......... Don't buy this product.
by C. Leighty (1 out of 5 stars)

Over the last month, I've purchased three different Trakdot units from three different companies (two on Amazon and from the official site) and in all three purchases, the unit arrived without the serial number to activate the product (the serial number is supposed to be located inside the unit where you insert one of the batteries).

I did try using what I thought was the serial number to activate one of the units, which I found to be quite simple, but the S/N turned out to be incorrect and the unit showed its location at the companies plant in China.

I was so hopeful that this product would be beneficial for travel, but if the company can't even include the serial number on their product, its useless.

I would not recommend this product based on my three purchase attempts.

Great peace of mind - - - - Maybe.
by A. Scientist (2 out of 5 stars)

I found opening this to install batteries a little mysterious and not too easy. However when my flight was cancelled due to weather and I had to spend the night in Balitmore before returning to AZ the next morning. It did give me great peace of mind to receive notifications where my suitcase was. The suitcase had spent the night in Baltimore too and to my pleasant surprise, caught the same plane out the next morning. It was great to receive notice that it landed with me in Phoenix. A good time saver, I walked right up to the carousel instead of trying to track the suitcase down with customer support. It worked so well I bought another one. I just wish it would work away from airports, such as theft protection when suitcase is left in a car or hotel room.

Update: I have downgraded from five to 2 stars. The first trip it worked well but on further use, it was difficult. As other reviewers mentioned the batteries fit very snugly and are both difficult to insert and to remove. Opening the case is also far more difficult than it needs to be. My main bitch however is that it is extremely difficult to start. It is so difficult that I could not get it started at the airport before checking my suitcase in on several occasions. It did not respond to a thumb press, nor to pushing with hard and even metal objects. On several occasions the trakdot left in the off condition with my suitcase because I could not get it started. Tech support recommended sliding back the black cover then using TWO thumbs to press and hold. As a woman, I'm not sure my hands are as strong as needed to activate the thing. Between inserting and removing batteries and difficulty starting this is a lot of hassle that could be omitted by a better design.

Waste of Time

A lot of hype for something that didn't work.

First the activation instructions in no way matched the labeling on the device.

Customer support left a message that they would get back with me in 5 business days.

Finally got it activated and left for the airport. The device indicated it was still at my residence for 30 minutes after arriving at the airport.

When I got to the destination the device indicated my luggage was back at the origination airport.

The airline tracked the luggage and determined that it was at the destination and retrieved it for me.

We were in the taxi heading into town (some 45 minutes later) before the device indicated the luggage had arrived at the destination.

Then the company sent me a bill for an annual service contract. The advertising indicated it ran on cellular networks so why a fee.

I sent it back.

Main Function Appears to Work Bluetooth Setup Is a Mess.
by JR (4 out of 5 stars)
November 30, 2015

Preliminary review, just got it and haven't travelled with it yet. The setup was pretty painless, got it tracking on the app, but the bluetooth was a mess. App says to go to phone setting to pair it, but it prompts for a pairing PIN which is not provided. After trying the generic ones 0000, 1234, 1111, 9999, etc. and having nothing work, I went back to the app. Buried a few levels down is a screen that has a button for bluetooth pairing. Push the button and it pairs. NO IDEA WHY the app says to go to your phone setup to pair it when you have to do it in the app. Once paired in the apps, the device disappears from the Bluetooth devices. Werird? Nothing in the instructions or the online FAQ address this bluetooth setup, Anyway, the Bluetooth locator is probably sort of a joke anyway. The main feature of telling me when I land if my luggage is where I am will have to be proven on my next trip. I had a high opinion of the company tech support as I asked two questions before I got the device and got answers right away. This time before I figured it out, I asked a question via the same means as before and over 12 hours later not response. Glad I wasn't leaving right away. They say they will respond within 3 days. Hate to say it, but that is not okay. 24 hours is the longest it should take and they better be working on going faster than that. They will have more competition if they don't take care of customers.

Clever idea but unreliable
by L.D (2 out of 5 stars)

After purchasing a few months ago I was excited to finally try my tracker on a trip to Europe. My first leg consisted of three flights, so I thought this would be great test. Unfortunately the device/service left me unsatisfied.

I flew from Seattle to London Heathrow, then to Paris CDG, then to Milan LIN, all in one day. I turned on the device and stowed it in my suitcase before driving to the airport. On the way to SeaTac (Seattle's main airport), I drove past King County airport and actually received a text message from Trakdot telling me my bag was in the vicinity of that location. Cool! This served as a confidence booster that the device was working.

Upon arriving in London I soon received a text telling me my bag had also made it. Check.

When I got to Paris, another text message. Check.

Upon arrival in Milan, no message. I tried the app, but it still showed the last known location as being in Paris. It took about 15 minutes for the bags to get to the carousel and I quickly spotted my bag coming around. I checked the app again and it still showed my bag being in Paris. And no text message.

As I waited for my bag to snake around the carousel, I looked at the bluetooth tracking on the app and it erratically reported my bag as being near/far, but it did find it...little solace after I'd already spotted my suitcase and was about to grab it. More importantly, this proved that the batteries were still working (it had been less than 24 hours since switching on with a fresh set), and yet I had not received an update.

While I was at first excited about this product, I now see it as almost useless; without the ability to ping the device in real time, instead relying upon it to send out location updates at its own intervals, there's no way to get a positive confirmation of where the device is currently. Rather, I'm only able to track where the device...was.

In this first trial, the device only tracked my bag as far as Paris. If my bag had not turned up in Milan/Linate, I'd have assumed it was still in Paris and been left arguing with the airline that they needed to look for it there. In fact my experience shows that the device can arrive at a major metropolitan airport and not register, proving the futility of the device. Imagine it had gone to the wrong airport (Milan Malpensa for example), or another city entirely (Rome), having only tracked it to Paris wouldn't do me much good at all.

I can imagine a scenario where this device proves its worth, if, for example, my Trakdot had actually registered to the system after being sent to the wrong airport (i.e., Rome). I'd be able to show the app to the airline and have them look for it at that airport. But the fact that my trial proves Trakdot can arrive at a major airport with good mobile phone coverage (my phone worked fine) and not show up on the system at all proves it cannot be relied upon.

I'll continue to use this until my first year of coverage expires (if only for the novelty factor) but my first experience proves the unreliability of the Trakdot system does not merit annual renewal or purchase of a second device (which I had previously been considering).

More than 250 hours of flawless performance.
by Il Directore (5 out of 5 stars)

Many reviewers have complained about the short battery life of the Trakdot. How's this? To track my wife (and her bag) on her trip to Europe, I installed two Duracell Quantum AA batteries into her Trakdot. I did that on June 5. I turned on the device hours before her flight. My wife never turned off the device during her entire trip, allowing me to follow her on my phone as she flew across the Atlantic to Paris, took the TGV down to Nice, and then a bus over to Madrid. The Trakdot is still working today, 10 days later. It just reported her return to the states. Yes, the battery is low, but we are talking about more than 250 hours of constant performance. And it's still going...
