Great Concept.. app needs a lot of bugs ironed out
by Crosswire (3 out of 5 stars)
December 26, 2013

My wife loves to Garden. I love tech. So when I saw this in the shop, I started laughing.. it was such a nerdy concept.. but then, it struck me. It does give plants a voice. Your dog, cat or kid lets you know when its hungry, tired, needs water, plants can't, other than wilting. The idea of using tech to monitor not just one, but four vital parameters and then transmitting it to your smartphone.. it's such an original idea in consumer tech. But.. the key question was, Does it really work? I read a few good reviews and took the plunge.. after all it was Christmas eve and I wanted to get my wife a nice gift and this fitted the bill to a T.

Well, my technophobic wife loved the idea and we decided to "plant" in in a sick indoor Cycas to see.. or rather, diagnose, the problem. Within 36 hours, we found that the Cycas wasn't getting enough light and there was TOO MUCH FERTILISER ... who would have thought? It even guided us to water the plant more, so as to get rid of the excess fertiliser and told us the temperature and moisture were OK. My wife said, "I thought of doing the same thing" ( and she's had a green thumb for decades) "But having it all spelled out, with data and recommendations...it feels much more scientific and satisfying"

This is pretty amazing. I noted another review that stated that it doesn't tell us how much more to water, or how much fertiliser to add, or how much more sun is needed. Actually, that would be great, but maybe its expecting too much. It does show in real time how much light the plant is getting and this suits us fine. It told us our indoor fig (Ficus) needed more light, the temperature, moisture and fertiliser levels were fine, so we moved it nearer to the window. Lets see how many days it needs. When we find and solve each problem, she plans to rotate the device among her plants. She doesn't feel spending on multiple devices is required or worth it, but if you have money to burn and no inclination to check for yourself, it might do the job.

Cons:
1.Only iOS software, no iPad version, you have to use the iPhone app in 2x mode. No android version yet and no link to PC/Mac
2.Cost: quite pricy, however, I don't plan to use it to monitor every plant, only as a diagnostic tool for the problem ones. And in a garden, it can monitor many at a time ( it monitors the soil and if the soil you have planted the plants is the same, the database will extrapolate based on the plants you have added to your garden
3. The app takes ages to update.. I found the data I wanted by logging in to the online site, where the recommendations were ready and awaiting me, though still no available on the app.

Update:The iPhone app is pretty useless.. I can't get any recommendations from it and had to rely on the online website. They really have to iron out the app
4. I would suggest an improved iPad version and an android version , plus a small app written for both mac and windows, as many people would prefer pop ups on their computers

Update: I took off a star for the iOS app. It doesn't work reliably. For those struggling with the app, i suggest check the online site in your computer browser, thats where useful info seems to come. The bluetooth connection is far from seamless.

I need more time to be sure how good this is, but it looks very promising.. and most important , my green thumbed wife loves it!

If you use it as a trouble shooter, you might get by with just one. However, if you want it to monitor your entire garden and supplant your human senses (including common sense), then you might need to spend a small fortune on monitors.

If you're on a budget, buy just one and use it in doubtful, or problem areas and move on once you solve the issue. I'll update the review once I get more experience with the monitor, but for now it looks very promising!

Update:02/07/14: The sensor doesn't do much , the app has to be fixed so that alerts are sent to the app.. it hasn't happened so far, and we have lost interest in the product. I do get information when I log in online, but that isn't good enough. Until Parrot makes the app work and the updates come regularly to your phone, don't buy. It will be frustrating and irritating. I keep my stars at 2-3

These worked great in the beginning and started to fail in different ways. They were replaced by PARROT until waranty ran out. Now they tell me there is no more support for the product or application! I strongly recomend not buying any PARROT product because they'll drop it like a hot potato! I bought 15 of these and 8 are bad. Thats about $400. Thanks for your support PARROT!

Parrot is a terrible company
by Mary (1 out of 5 stars)
July 8, 2014

I like what this product does, but good luck getting a replacement from the company if it goes wrong. I bought two of these. One I used indoors with no problems. The other, I put outside. It worked until the first rain came. Then it stopped. I opened it and found it had leaked water into the battery compartment. Note, the battery compartment was completely closed, so it was not my error. I put a new battery in and tried again. Again, it worked until the next rain and then stopped. It was clearly defective. I wrote to the company and they requested I send a receipt showing purchase. I did so on May 10, 2014 and have not heard anything again. On May 30, I resent the receipt. Still nothing.

It seems to me that the flower power is useless if it can't get wet. I will revise my review if I get my money back or a replacement.

Update August 10, 2014. I still have not heard anything from the company. The defective unit does not turn on at all, so it can't be used indoors or outdoors.

Was good when it worked...
by KJ (2 out of 5 stars)
May 3, 2016

I have been through 2 of these units now. When it worked (for 3 whole weeks) it was good and a neat toy. My bluetooth stopped responding and I worked with Parrot Tech support. They RMA'd the unit, but it took a week for the company to receive it, then they rejected it because the RMA number was not on the outside of the box (the instructions stated to include the form in the box, and did not say to put the RMA number on the box). It took a week for the rejected package to get back to me, then another week to get back to Parrot, and one more week for them to replace the unit. The new unit worked for 1 week before it stopped responding. The tech support was reasonably good, but I'm not going to waste another full month of messing with them to replace it again.

Product discontinued
by William L. Hembree (1 out of 5 stars)
September 25, 2018

Parrot has discontinued this product and all support for it.

The latest release of iOS, version 12, broke the application completely. The app now crashes on launch and Parrot will not be fixing the bug.

Do not buy this product, in other words.

Not Reliable, if you really want one, try one for AT LEAST 6 months before buying another one
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)
October 6, 2015

I bought 1 to try and then another after a couple of weeks or so and another because they were doing well. I ended up having 5 devices. Then, after about 2-3 months, 2 devices suddenly stopped working correctly. They either kept on showing 0% humidity or stuck at 22%. And the fertilizer metering started to get affected in consequence.

I filed a report on Parrot website for a device and about TWO weeks later I got a reply asking me to return the device to a certain location. The return package was sent (paid by myself) and got accepted upon delivery. Then, the next day, the package was refused and sent back to me unopened!!! I double checked the address, no error there. I sent an email to Parrot about this, no response. A month or 2 later, someone contacted me and offer to send a replacement. That's not the way to treat a loyal customer.

After such horrible experience, I decided to bite the bullet and take upon myself all the lemon devices that I now frustratingly own.

As of now, out of my 5 devices, only 2 are still working correctly. But for how long?

Fun and fairly useful, if pricy, gadget, but breaks too fast
by JohnVidale (2 out of 5 stars)
November 1, 2015

[edit - too many of these broke or rendered nonsense results, in the long run of no help in watering my plants. So I dropped the rating from 4 to 2 stars.]

I got four of these - three for my office plants and one for home. The one at home doesn't talk to my iPhone for some reason I can't figure out, but the three in my office work fine. I ignore the sun and fertilizer reports, maybe I'll restart the fertilizer reports when I get more fertilizer, but the sunlight depends on the weather here in Seattle, and I'm not going to fret if the plants don't get enough sun in a rainy week.

The reports on water level are useful. Maybe half the days, when I come in in the morning, I run the app to check water levels and do whatever the app tells me. I can't say it is a bargain - 3 X $50 is a good fraction of what the fancy plants and the pots cost, and I can still kill the occasional plant for reasons that I cannot fathom. It would be nice if the devices notified me without my having to run the app, maybe I'm doing something slightly awry.

These devices are hard to beat in dismaying one's friends at how much technological overkill is seeping into our lives.

and it seems like it was designed and programmed by junior high school ...
by New York City Boy (2 out of 5 stars)
March 24, 2015

Too many software bugs. Not sure if my Flower Power itself is defective, as every day the app displays "Water Tomorrow." "Tomorrow" never comes, as the next day it displays the same message. I know the soil moisture is sufficient, so I'm wondering if there is a hardware problem, in addition to the software bug. Normally, my other 3 Flower Power devices would display what needs to be done in a specific number of days, say one week, and each day the message changes. For example, yesterday it might have displayed "Add fertilizer in 3 days." Today it would display "Add fertilizer in 2 days." Eventually, it will tell me to "Add Fertilizer Today." It's a minor hassle to contact Parrot via their website, as it has incorrect or missing information, and it seems like it was designed and programmed by junior high school kids. When you finally are able to submit a question you will receive a tracking number saying you will receive an answer, " . . in the next 48 working hours." You will never hear from them, so don't get your hopes up. You can try to phone their Customer Support, but I've not had good luck getting someone to actually answer the phone. Once, after I actually did get through I was disconnected mid-sentence. I would suggest just going to Home Depot and buying one of their $7 plant monitors. (Or maybe you can find a good one at Amazon.com) You'll save yourself aggravation and money. Parrot made a good video, but they failed to build a product that works (2 of my 4 Flower Powers were defective and had to be replaced), and they are completely clueless when it comes to customer support.

Data Won't Transfer
by Digiteacher (2 out of 5 stars)
November 1, 2015

Really disappointing in this product. It links to my phone and the Android app loaded, but the data won't transfer. Standing next to it (I mean, right next to it) it just gives an error message. Without the data, it really isn't any good at all, although I can see current temperature ... It really deserves zero stars, but I was hoping people would read this instead of ignoring it. I didn't get any joy from trying to contact the company about it, so it really was just a waste of money.

Lasted 4 months before completly failing...trying to get a replacement....standby
by Douglas Nicholas (2 out of 5 stars)
May 11, 2016

Update, I received my unit on May 10, 2016 and promptly placed it in my vegetable garden. I found the data useful regarding watering and fertilizer. Overall it was helpful for my first growing season. Today is Sept 5, 2016 and I have just planted my winter garden and wanted to start using my Parrot and collecting some data. The battery was dead so I replaced it. But the unit has cracked and is not working at all. It is only 4 months old and it is dead. I'm going to contact Zorro Sounds who actually sold the unit on Amazon and see if they will warrant it. If not, this will have been a complete waste of money. I hope Parrot and Zorro Sound stand behind their products.
