Product Description

Powerful, Portable, and Practical

Three CREE XLamp XBD LEDs provide a minimum of 300 lumens of adjustable brightness with 15 settings over a 100:1 range. Measuring approximately 1.6 inches in diameter and 4.1 inches long, the small form factor makes the R-PAL extremely easy to carry in your pocket, purse, or bag. Capable of providing 360º of illumination, the R-PAL works in all the places that a flashlight does not.

Superior Functionality
  • Brightness setting is saved when the LEDs are turned off so that the device returns to the same brightness level when the LED's are turned on again. This applies to all modes.
  • Standard Flashing and SOS modes can be transitioned to from any brightness setting and further adjusted. The mode is saved when the LED's are turned off, and the R-PAL will start in the same mode when the LED's are turned on again.
  • The R-PAL features an Automatic Shut-off mode, where the device will first warn the user after approximately 15 minutes through a flashing pattern, and then turn itself off after an additional 3 minutes. The Automatic Shut-off timer is reset by pressing any button. This mode can be enabled or disabled at any time, and is also saved when the LED's are turned off.
  • Low Battery is indicated through a distinct flashing pattern, warning the user until the battery runs out and the device shuts off. This allows for constant brightness level throughout the entire life of the battery.
Built To Last

Using advanced polymer technologies, the R-PAL enclosure has been designed for everyday use from -4 to 104°F. Waterproof and shockproof, the R-PAL is IP67 rated and can withstand a 1.5 meter drop, and submersion in water. (It is NOT a dive light).

Features

  • Powerful, Compact, and Durable 300-lumen Light. Uses a Lithium Ion 18650B Protected Battery.
  • Fits hand, pocket or purse and easily attaches to camera D-rings, tripods, or 1/4-20 threads.
  • Adjustable Warm-White Light Fills 360º. Simple Controls: Brightness, Auto-off, Flashing, SOS.
  • Waterproof (IP67), Impact Resistant (5 ft), -4 to +104°F Operation (limited by battery).
  • Designed and Built in the USA. Limited Warranty. Rechargeable battery not included.

Pricey but it has the performance and functionality
by Archimedes Tritium (4 out of 5 stars)

Expensive, but kept it because it offers unique performance at this time: (1) a warm-white light (rare nowadays and easy on the eyes) that (2) fits in the hand (almost keychain sized), (3) can light up a room, and (4) is light-weight.

Bit like having a battery-operated 30-watt incandescent light-bulb that can run for a long time and go anywhere without being fragile.

The warm-white color of the light is a plus; even relatively scarce neutral-white flashlights (examples are Zebralight SC62W and ThruNite TN12) seem blue in comparison. The common, cool-white-blue lights are cheaper to produce for a given brightness level, but cast a sickly glow that can make it hard to "see" no matter how bright. Candles, the Sun, and incandescents were the default until cheaper production and higher lumen ratings turned lighting as blue-white as the inside of a fluorescently-lit Hong Kong sweat shop. Seen the movie "Joe vs. the Volcano"?

Improvements that could perfect the unit and soften the price:

A) A diffuser. The instructions warn against looking at the LEDs. They are intense points of light reminiscent of a spot welder. Can't be doing a person's retinas any good when glimpsed. Flashlights with such bright LEDs have them buried deep inside the head, unseen by user. But when using the R-PAL, its difficult NOT to look at the LEDs when manipulating the controls, or when it is just sitting there lighting up the room. Anything above low-medium brightness and you need to avoid glancing at the unit to avoid seeing blobs and spots.

This might be fixed by replacing the currently transparent plastic ring in the central section by a diffusing ring. I wrapped mine with several turns of milky Scotch tape. Seems to work, and makes it possible to glance at the unit without paying a price, at least until it gets outside and the tape attracts dirt.

The instructions also warn against touching the LEDs (don't look & don't touch ...); no doubt skin oil could result in uneven heating of the LEDs and damage or reduce their life. Since there is no reason to ever touch them, the entire inner light-passing lens ring would do well to be locked in place, perhaps sealed, to keep out dirt. The ring currently just slips off when unscrewed for battery replacement.
2) It would be helpful to have a moonlight mode, perhaps 0.5 lumens. The dimmest it runs is 2.3 lumens, which can be bright to dark-adapted eyes.
3) A red filter central lens ring would tie into suggestion #2; for reading maps without losing dark adaptation, for example. One could imaging turning a bezel and having the red lens emerge/retract from the housing. Or it might be simpler to include a separate dim red LED on the unit. Keeping track of separate attachments and replacements lens/rings would be messy.

These changes would improve safety and usability, and extend the range of night tasks, making $129 more reasonable. As it is, if you can spend the money on such a thing, its does have the performance and functionality. If it was ~$75 and/or had the above changes at $129, I'd buy more. But, for now, one is it, and glad to have it. Should last a life-time.

UPDATE: unit gets hot enough after a few minutes that the Scotch tape diffuser mentioned above is not a good long-term solution to the "spot welder" effect. This "arc-welder issue" does degrade usability.

Great camping/travel lantern.

This unit is very, very tiny and very, very bright.

LED Color is warm, really wish there was a diffuser built into the lens (needed on the higher brightness settings).

Worked with my existing mini tripods.

I'm running the unit with a single Orbtronic 3400Mah (Protected Panasonic Cells) and run times have been excellent.

No official stats, but I've yet to change the battery, and I use low quite a bit.

Picked up a Xtar VC2 charger at the same time (love the Xtar chargers).

Wanted to Like this, Only used 1 time over night camp out in GW forest VA. The rest of the time hanging on wire shelf in bathroom. Heard a noise like something dropped on floor went to find the bottom switch and battery on the floor. It literally came apart , the White Plastic Failed . Rendering the light useless. Plastic Material failed .....

Update , RTG replaced the light free of charge.

(Double) Thrilled
by Jim (5 out of 5 stars)

Thrilled. Was worried about the price but boy does this little lantern deliver. It's light, it's bright and it's totally water resistant. It saved me on a 20 day camping trip to the Yukon. Yes, it's expensive, but I'd rather pay more for made in the USA especially when it's well made.
** EDIT **

Had a minor problem with the lamp (it was stuck on high). My bad, because it was the holidays and I got no reply, I thought they might be out of business. Boy was I wrong. They are, indeed, very much in business and very responsive. I spoke to Kurt who immediately offered up a replacement. Very happy; double happy because I was about to buy a second unit and was worried I could not. If you're looking for a true piece of adventure gear, this is a must.

A uniquely useful product
by John Jasbinsek (5 out of 5 stars)

This "personal area light" is a distinct product from other light sources such as flashlights and headlamps. It creates a whole area of illumination instead of a narrow beam, and it becomes more useful the more you use it becuase you will keep findinf new ways to use it.

Just returned from a camping trip where we put the R-PAL to the test. The many levels of brightness are extremely useful (and the maximum brightness level is VERY bright!).

We used it for:
1. early morning hikes to illuminate unfimiliar trails before the sun came up.
2. around the camp as it was getting dark - way better than using a flashlight or headlamp as it illuminates a whole area
3. in the middle of the night in the camp outhouse to illuminate the whole space (an unexpected use!)

The blinking mode has also come in very handy on my bicycle when my bike lights lost power - I just pulled it out and attached it to the backpack using the R-PAL metal loop attachment. With the high power bright setting there is no way you can't be seen!

Even have used it to find dropped car keys at night by the car.

Keep the R-PAL in your backpack or purse, and especially take the R-PAL camping. The R-PALsupplements your headlamps in a completely distinct way. You WILL find uses for the R-PAL in unexpected situations.

Excellent light - Should include the battery
by N. Carty (4 out of 5 stars)

ORIGINAL REVIEW:For the price this thing costs, it should include the rechargeable battery. I don't think I've every purchased something that REQUIRES a rechargeable battery, but doesn't include it. Ridiculous.

EDIT: I ordered a battery and received it a few days ago. The light works very well. I'm using it with a 360 camera for some real estate and construction photography. I'd also note that the seller contacted me about my review above. I appreciate the quick follow up, it shows that he cares about his product.

Still going after 3 years.

To be honest I don't use this too often, but it makes a great backup light. Battery life is good, it is super compact and very useful to hang in a tree or the tent while camping. Did some pretty rough 'testing' and it survived just fine. I just wish it wasn't pwm, and having even dimmer modes would be nice for nightlight use (down to .01 lumens), higher CRI LED would be great as well. Company responded quick to my emails and I was able to get the light quick for a camping trip. Overall probably the best lanterns out there, I call it a pocket lightbulb.

Big bonus with the tripod mount, makes it really handy with a mini tripod and paper cone to make a desk lamp.

A well made product with the feel of a small batch but quality manufacture.
by William D. (5 out of 5 stars)

I've had about a week to spend with the R-Pal and my opinion is.. this is a well made product that does what it is advertised to do. The price is a little on the high side but I believe this is due to the fact that this is a small company, not a Surefire or Black Diamond and production costs are probably higher. I've seen several reviews that take issue with the housing material being made of PVC piping. The feel of the housing is substantial and if it is a PVC type of material, I believe it must be an industrial grade. I don't believe that should be a concern if you are considering buying this light. It is well engineered in that you have two screw ports on either end to attach tripods (as I have done, seen in the pic) or other connectors. At it's highest setting, it is blindingly bright while the lowest setting provides the longest battery life and is more than bright enough to light a tent or to read a map. When loading the battery, I examined the globe and it seems rugged enough however, a second "frosted" globe option would be nice to diffuse the light. All in all, this is a well made product with the feel of a small batch but quality manufacture.
