Excellent light up ball that works really well in every way that matters
by Bryan J. Ischo (5 out of 5 stars)

This is an awesome light up football. It is perfect for my nine year old son who loves to throw it with me during the dark winter months. It is easily visible in the dark. The light is not terribly bright so during the day you wouldn't even know it's on; but the important thing is seeing it in the dark and it is just perfect for that. It's soft and very easy to throw and catch. The surface is a little slippery for a while but it roughens up enough with use that pretty quickly it's grippy enough to throw and catch with ease. It's water resistant and we've gotten it quite wet - dropping into puddles on more than one occasion, as well as throwing it in light rain - and it's never been a problem. Keep in mind that you cannot use lithium ion batteries because of this (it's dangerous to get lithium ion batteries near water) so you kind of have to use non-rechargeable batteries. But the batteries last surprisingly long - I'd say at least 20 - 30 hours of continuous usage - and are very easy to change due to the simple screwdriver based mechanism. The battery pack is hard but it is deeply embedded in the ball so it doesn't hurt even if you get hit hard with the ball. The ball itself is pretty dense and definitely much heavier than a real football of the same size, but it's easy to adjust to and fine to throw and catch. It's easy to turn it on and off by pushing on the nerf logo, and it does a great job of switching its light on only when you throw it so as not to waste batteries, and occasionally flashing when not on so that you can find it in the dark if you've dropped it. Really this is an excellent ball for use in dark conditions and I recommend it highly over any other light-up ball (and I have tried others, which did not compare favorably to this ball).

Don't let the fun end because it's dark!

My 10 year old son has taken a strong interest in football this year, so I picked this up for us to play with. We previously had the orange and black Nerf football, but it was starting to fall apart from age and I wanted something we could use at night. This fit the bill!

Relative to the traditional orange/ black nerf ball, it is slightly heavier because of the internal electronics. It is sized similarly. The surface is a little smoother (uses more dense foam) relative to the orange/black ball.

It uses 3x AAA batteries. The batteries are inserted by removing 2 small Philips screws, and removing a block of foam to access the electronic assembly which is installed at the very center of the ball (for obvious reasons!...). Tip: A lot of people tend to over tighten battery cover screws. They don't need to be overly tight. If you strip them, you will not have good access to the screw head!

The light feature is turned on and off by pushing on the foam, on the Nerf logo. This requires moderate pressure, pretty easy for most kids 6 and above I would say. The auto off feature is nice, in case your child forgets to turn it off, won't deplete batteries as fast. The ball is plenty bright in the dark, without being overbearing. Perfect for continued fun into the night! It blinks slowly when handled, and lights up solid when thrown. M

Most importantly, my son loves it and even wants to take it to school to show off to the other kids. The surface is still slippery because it's new, but I expect that to get better once it gets broken in and the surface scuffed/de-glazed up a bit with time. Overall, I am happy with the purchase!

Ball too hard and heavy for kids.

I was hoping to use this ball to play catch with my 7 and 10 year old daughters (neither of whom are super athletes). This ball is so hard that I do t like throwing it hard at them for fear of it hitting them in the face. This ball isn't much softer than a cheap rubber football. Also, it is really heavy for its size. Heavier than any other ball it's size ( including leather footballs)

Neat concept; works better for older kids

It's a neat concept and can work for older kids. If you read some of the other reviews, you'll see a trend - it's heavy, not that soft and it's hard to turn on the light. I'll add that it is very hard to grip (even for an adult) - that, combined with it's heaviness, makes it difficult to toss around accurately with my young son. I could see this working better for older kids 10+.

Great football for after dark!

OK, we felt a little silly that it took us awhile to figure out how to turn this on. (Little on/off push button right by the NERF logo.) Once we figured it out, we loved it! Nice weight to throw and we love how it lights up. My son is excited that we can play past dark now...

We bought this for the neighbor kids to play with at night and they totally love it! It's a bit hard and slippery for little hands, so it seems best for the big kids. It took a little while for everyone to figure out how it works and to keep it working well enough that you don't loose sight of it when it goes dark...say under a car when you're playing on the street at night...but once we got the hang of it, it was fun even when we "lost" it.

Longer play time.

This football is so much fun to play with. We bought it for our son because he likes to throw football with the neighborhood kids. When daylight savings time ended it became hard for them to see their other ball. This one allows them to play outside longer. Thanks for a great product!

this works great, spirals pretty good

Well, this works great, spirals pretty good, it's hard ball though...not soft like nerf my young kids think so too if they miss at night lol

I thought it would be more like a regular nerf. It's also smaller than a regular nerf.

Great football, easy to throw. Wish there was an option for it to stay lit when stationary. Would also be awesome if there were other colors but I haven't been able to locate them. My son loves tossing the ball around after dark. And to be honest, so does dad.

Perfect gift for your youngster.

Bought this as a present for a young boy -- it was very popular. Once switched on, the ball flashes on and off while motionless. Once thrown, it stays lit continuously while airborne. An excellent item. Adults will notice that the ball is slightly small for their hands, but it isn't made for adults -- it's made for kids, who will find it a perfect fit.
