Product Description

OWI 631 Air Power Racer Kit, Recommended Ages 10+, Fun and Easy to Build, Safety Valve Will Open and Bleed the Air Automatically if the User Keeps Pumping While the Tank is Full

Gasoline is currently the fuel of choice, but petroleum used to make it is becoming increasingly difficult to find and is contributing to environmental issues and worldwide problems. Automobile manufacturers know this and are spending tremendous amounts of money to develop alternative fuel for the future. A few years ago, OWI introduced a Salt Water Fuel Cell vehicle and is now introducing another alternative fuel vehicle. Let us introduce you to OWI's Air Power Racer. Air as fuel...could possibly be another alternative to petroleum. Air is available 24/7, does not run out and it's free. By golly, we might have something here and OWI's Air Power Racer can break down this technology to its simplest form. This is an amazing kit that uses the vision of our ancestors back in the middle of the 19th century. Now, your child can bring that vision to life and gain valuable insight into propulsion via compressed air. Assembly and operation is a breeze for the builder who has experience assembling kits. The estimated assembly time is 4 hours, which makes it ideal for quality time as a parent/child project. A pump-up bar with a pressure meter is built into the car for easy operation. The air chamber made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate). Another safety device implemented into the kit is a safety valve.

Neat Racer, good learning tool.
by conejos (4 out of 5 stars)

This was purchased for a 10 tear old. He was able to assemble the racer with very little help. The racer provided a valuable learning experience as to how motors, pumps, and gauges work.

The only problem encountered was the tiny o-rings that operate as piston rings on the one cylinder of the air motor cylinders were leaky. It was necessary to orient that piston at one end of it's stroke where air could not leak out the intake or discharge ports in order to pump up air pressure. Clearer instructions on the sequence of installation of the three o-rings to always put the first o-ring in the groove most distant from the piston may have avoided this problem.

Other than that, the racer operated as it should.

This is an awesome quality kit, but the instructions and careful attention to detail are required.

This is an awesome quality kit. The design is spot on, and the quality and precision of the plastic parts if impressive. Technologies demonstrated include piston drives (like steam trains used), the related pressure steering valves, and even a piston/ spring technology based mechanical pressure gauge. I'm an aerospace sensor engineer with 30+ years of experience with air measurement and control technologies and that experience was useful as I built this kit in about 4 hours. It worked perfectly, but I can see how most 10 to 14 year old persons would lack the experience to watch for all that can go wrong with assembling such small, delicate and lint contamination sensitive o-ring seals. Look for the YouTube video that shows the actual parts at each assembly step laying over the related instruction booklet page.

No batteries needed!

Not quite as easy for a youngster; the most difficult part is hose connection. Since I was 71 years old and my granddaughter was 7 you need a little force and "nose" grease. Since she is young she does not have the force nor the "nose" grease. Read the instructions twice and note the length of the hose length and add the total. Measure the long hose you will see that its a little longer. If it is allow each hose to be a little longer. We did not have any problems but would like each his be a few mm's longer. She was surprised at the pressure test we had no leaks and when we pulled the hose that was clamped she was startled with the release of air. She thoroughly enjoys it!

The valve will not hold pressure like it's supposed to
by Cori Schuman (1 out of 5 stars)

Completely unsatisfied with this product. My son and I just took this out to build, and after following every single a step, it doesn't work. The valve will not hold pressure like it's supposed to, making it impossible to actually "pump it up" and drive it.

The directions are vague and hard to read--could be because they're in black and white, while the pieces are color-coded...

I would not recommend this to anyone. This was a total frustration.

NOT FOR KIDS

I am an expert model builder and this was difficult for me to assemble. The recommended age range is way too low, very small parts. In the end it never worked as advertised.

Seals for piston too easily damaged during assembly
by Rob Dunn (2 out of 5 stars)

Great experience to build with my son. In the end the pistons leaked badly and it would not hold air. They need to include a tapered sleeve to prevent seal damage to the piston seals during assembly. We had fun but my son was disappointed that in the end we couldn't build air pressure. Cyclinder could also be a little sturdier material. But we did have fun with the process so I can't rate it a total failure.

Otherwise a great, robust design

Kids assembled this, but needed help with deburring the little nibs that are left on the plastic. Otherwise a great, robust design. Definitely needed help with some of the steps as its somewhat complicated! Pretty neat concept car for kids.

Perfect for my Dad!
by MamaTree (5 out of 5 stars)

I buy these for my dad to keep his mind sharp and give him something to do. This was one of his favorites to put together. For my 71 year dad, this was fairly easy. But it did keep him engaged and he rolls it around the house. Mission accomplished!
