Do NOT Buy!! Stay AWAY!! Damaged all electric outlets in my kitchen.
by Aida T. (1 out of 5 stars)

I used this waffle maker for the first time today. I followed all the instructions and when I plugged it in, the light lid up for a few seconds and the machine got a little warm (I could actually put my hand on the plates). Then, the machine stopped working altogether and I realized it had damage all of the electrical wiring to the electrical outlets in my entire kitchen. I moved it to a different wall unit outside of kitchen to test it again and sure enough, it damaged that electrical wiring. Now, I have to hire an electrician. I am BEYOND PISSED right now!

Best waffle iron ever
by Caroline (5 out of 5 stars)
April 2, 2017

After ruining my variable temperature oyster waffle maker (plates became uncleanable from caramelized sugar), I decided to replace it with this one, and it did not dissapoint. The oyster unit is much cheaper, and depending on your needs, may be just fine. But if you want to make true European waffles or can afford to splurge, this unit is recommended. Below I detail my first use, give reasons as to why I like it, and finish with who I think may benefit by splurging for this unit.

First use:

I got this unit with the liege waffle plates, and immediately made the batter for this waffle type. I followed the instructions for oiling the plates, set the temperature to 7 (recommended from the included recipe book), waited for the light to turn off, them put my first piece of dough in. I rotated the iron a few times, then waited 3 minutes. Periodically I would lift the iron to check, and to my delight there was ZERO sticking, which allowed me to ensure these waffles were done to my liking. I highly recommend the companion waffle fork to remove the waffles once done. Avain, removing the waffles was a breeze. As you can see in the picture, the sugar caramelized just as it should, and the waffles had the correct firmness. Just like the street vendors sell in europe. When I was done, I unplugged the unit, let it cool, removed the plates, and cleaned.

Why I like this unit:
-You can remove the plates, which means you can easily clean them. This is a huge upgrade from other irons, as inability to clean plates is what did my old unit in. It also greatly simplifies the cleaning process.
-You can also swap the plates for different waffle types. Want American style Belgian waffles? Check. Ice cream cones? Check. Stuffed waffles? Check. Etc. This unit even has a plate for toasting sandwhiches. So you can make what you and your family or friends want. This is great, as i like liege waffles, but also appreciate Belgian waffles and want to start making ice cream cones.
- Plates so far are high quality and really nonstick. The ease of cleaning no doubt will increase the plate lifetime, as no more scratching the plates. And if you do ruin them, you can just replace them.
-The iron flips over so you can evenly spread the dough. Adding to this, the unit heats uniformly, side to side, and top/bottom.
-Adjustible temperature. This allows you to make a variety of waffles to your liking.

Who is this for?
-Anyone who makes waffles frequently, and particularly those who get away from what I'll call "traditional" American recipes. By these I mean batters that you laddle in, and generally do not stick to the plates (though this iron is good for those too). If you want liege waffles, I highly recommend. When I tried to use my older unit to make liege waffles, cleaning was a mess, the waffles cooked unevely, and the waffles never were the correct thickness and consistency.

I'm not against the cheaper units, which may work fine for your needs. I never had issues when I stuck to the laddle in type recipes, other than some sticking and occasional burning. But for the trickier recipes, this unit proves to be superior, and in my opinion, worth the cost.

Very serious, real-deal machine, with no frills and some clunky design flaws
by finlero (4 out of 5 stars)

PROS: makes absolutely top-notch waffles; plates are sturdy, nonstick, removable, and **dishwasher-safe**; adjustable thermostat; relatively compact design; 180 degree motion; impressive variety of other plates.

CONS: design is relatively clunky and inelegant; need a screwdriver to remove plates; sheet metal can scuff your countertop.

So first things first: this machine makes off-the-charts fantastic waffles. After a lot of research I chose the Croquade because it looked like far and away the most serious home machine on the American market for real Belgian waffles, and it doesn't disappoint. I bought it with Liège (sugary brioche) waffles in mind, and they come out about perfect, with the shape of the plates yielding the perfect crunchy exterior, soft interior, and caramelized sugar you look for. The other plate options are fun too, notably the one for filled waffles, which is tough to find; there are other plates you can buy for making ice cream cones, American-style waffles, and several more unusual choices.

The plates themselves are durable, nonstick-coated cast aluminum, which means they hold heat well and make excellent waffles that pop out very easily. And critically, the plates are not only removable, but dishwasher safe, so the buttery, sugary mess left over from Liège waffles cleans up in a snap. The 180-degree motion on the machine is great for even cooking, especially for airier Brussels-style waffles. The adjustable thermostat is also welcome, especially if you want to par-cook a big batch of waffles for a larger group, then finish them quickly at a lower temp. And the machine is relatively compact, so it stores nicely.

Having said all this, the machine is one of the rougher-around-the-edges home appliances I've seen, especially considering the high price. The plates are fixed in place using two small M6 screws, so you'll need a screwdriver handy every time you want to wash and/or change the plates. Upon removing the plates, each side of the outer metal shell totally detaches from the base (except for the power line) which, in addition to just being clunky, can scuff your countertop.

Over the years I've gotten pretty serious about my waffles, and if you are too this is almost certainly *the* machine for making real Belgian-style waffles at home. If you're an enthusiastic, but not all-out rabid waffler, there are plenty of slightly less serious, but much more elegant and refined options available for less money.

Repackaged Piece of Junk
by Peter R. (1 out of 5 stars)

Buyer beware! Gave this to my wife on Chraistmas Eve. I knew when I opened the shipping box that the original box was tampered with when I saw the old scotch tape that was probably leftover from the previous buyer that sent this iron back.

After taking the iron out of the box, I discovered the reason why it was returned before I had the pleasure of ending up with this flimsy, cheaply- made, damaged waffle iron. The waffle iron would not even close tightly. I took the plates out and reinstalled them to see if maybe they were not installed correctly by the first buyer, only to find that the iron would still not close properly. Stay away from this iron! It's not worth the money!

I can't wait to send it back. I just feel bad for the next customer that may end up with this very same iron.

Is working quite well for us
by 🌈 KT (5 out of 5 stars)

This makes *really good* waffles. The plates work great - a little awkward getting on and off, but honestly I can't fault that because it's much better to have removable plates than not, and if they are removable, there's just going to be some awkwardness, so I didn't take a star off for that.

We got both the "brussels" plate and the "stuffed" plate - I think it's great they have plates for other things like cones and paninis and such. The plates are well-made, no flaws or rough spots in the finish. I'd never had a stuffed waffle before, but I have to say I'm now a fan. Bananas mushed around with strawberry jam is now my favorite.

I had no trouble with it heating, staying hot or properly cooking the waffles. It looks like at some point they did have a power issue due to it being a non-US product, but it seems they may have that worked out now, because I'm certainly not having any.

The handles are a bit odd, but I found that if you face it forward while filling, close it, then hold a handle and turn the base as you're lifting the cooking plates, so that you end up with it upside down but still facing foward, the handles do actually assist with that. They're not shaped very well for that, but it's still useful-ish.

They must have done a rewrite on the instruction book as well, because I found it to be just fine. The recipe book that came with it is *really* handy. The soft vanilla waffles are amazing.

I'll certainly update if there are any issues that pop up, but for now we're quite pleased with it.
