CONNECTION: Pairing the device to my phone failed more often than not. It would disconnect in the middle of shooting.

SETUP: This device beeps the entire time until you unlock the head and connect to the camera. It will make you feel rushed and frustrated especially if you're using the device for the first time.

SCRATCHED PHONE: Mounting a large iPhone to it may require you to remove your iPhone case. That's the mistake I made because the harness scratched my phone, which is simply too big for this device.

SOUND: I knew I wasn't going to get quality sound, but it's way worse than I imagined. This device gets so loud that it almost entirely masks out recorded conversations.

If you're looking for a quick from case to field solution, this device isn't it unless you've got a lot of patience.

When this company starts taking UX and UI seriously I'll consider their brand again.

Cheers.

Neat toy when it works
by Y. Winters (2 out of 5 stars)

In an ideal situation (outdoors, plenty of light, blue skies, indirect sunlight), and if your unit is working properly, the Osmo can produce a very nice image. The stabilization is pretty impressive. However, too many technical issues plague this camera to make it much more than a "cheap" toy.
1. I've used half a dozen Osmo's and at least half of them had defects. The first one (I borrowed) worked well and I had a great time with it. The second one had a bizarre audio glitch that actually effected video (audio would record at half speed, so video had a length of black on the back-end of each clip while the audio finished playing). The first OSMO unit I bought for myself was completely defective (unusable out of the box). The replacement had a sever tilt to the horizon, requiring a minute+ long calibration every time I started the unit - but the unit quickly lost horizon again each time.
2. Audio quality is unusable. Sounds like you're recording underwater.
3. It takes a while to get the OSMO up and running....every time. When you turn on the Osmo, you have to wait for the wi-fi signal to pop up to your phone, and if you're already connected to a wi-fi signal, you'll have to go in your settings and switch to the Osmo. Then you go into the DJI Go app and HOPE that the wi-fi successfully connected so that the camera shows up on your phone. But many times I open the app and there's nothing there. So I go back into wi-fi settings, see that the OSMO is indeed connected, then re-open the DJI app - and after that little dance, the camera usually shows up. But not always. There have been several times I just couldn't get the app to work right, where I switched over to a different camera, or even my phone out of frustration and need for timeliness. The OSMO is just not reliable enough to pack as a sole camera.
4. In dim light, it's just bad. The image is very noisy and loses saturation. However, if you do have a bright light in darkness - like a spotlight - it actually works pretty good.

On the good side, in ideal lighting conditions and with a properly-working unit, the OSMO is a fun stabilized wide-angle deep-focus camera. In ideal lighting, you can even get professional looking clips. Just cross your fingers with this thing.

Also, I've had nothing but horrible experiences with DJI customer service, so like I said, cross your fingers with their hardware.

Very nice useful little Video recording tool!

This is a pretty cool little device..

I have been wanting a device that will give me stable shots while walking around for quite some time (Without having to pay huge dollars for a Steadicam with a "Robocop" arm)..

this little device really makes walking shots smooth and fulfills much of my need to make my shooting better without the extra step and artifacts of a "Warp Stabilizer".

Pros:

Actually Works.. for Pan Smoothing, Roll smoothing

The footage looks pretty good: Actually I have two GoPro Hero 4 Black models and the footage of this looks quite a bit better

Has manual camera settings for those of us who know how to set the camera for what we want and What looks best

Small and compact!

LIghtweight and doesn't hurt your arm

Is compatible to work with the X5 Camera which has much better quality

Has the option to use an external microphone

Has features that allow other utilities and parts to be integrated (as needed)

Cons:

Not great in low light (but what do you want for the price)

Goes through batteries very quickly

Requires a Mobile Phone or tablet device to use (And really needs a newer model so processing can keep up) with live view.

Accessories are pretty expensive

The internal microphone is horrible (But the port to plug in the extra is fantastic!!)

I had an old Samsung Note 2 that I was hoping I could dedicate for this phone but It would just freeze up on me when trying to use it with the camera.. If this camera had it's own screen that was touch sensitive, it would be just about perfect.. I am assuming that part of the battery inefficiency has to do with needing WiFi to preview on the phone..

I was considering this or the DJI Ronan for my 5d Mk II but opted for this because of the price and to have a little more flexibility. I may still get the Ronan at a later time though..

Great little unit
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

Great unit but showed up with zero instructions, and getting up and running is very difficult without 'em. Nonetheless, there are plenty instructional vids on YouTube, and you can be functioning rather quickly.

First, you need to download the old DJI Go app. for your phone. NOT the Go4. One prob: you need internet access to wireless while doing the setup on your phone. However, you also need to connect to the Osmo through the same wireless connection, so you may be switching back and forth. Pay attention!

This unit was discontinued by DJI around 4 years ago, but it's still quite functional once set up.

Surprised to find no standard tripod screw connection in the bottom (the battery door). You need to purchase the proprietary tripod if you want to set the unit up independently. That, or haul out the duct tape.

When you get everything working the video is good quality but their products are just not reliable
by A. Barger (2 out of 5 stars)

I've owned several DJI products and found they don't work well. This Osmo required me to update the firmware to use the app a few days ago. The firmware updated failed and the camera no longer records. Now DJI is requiring me to send in the device. When you get everything working the video is good quality but their products are just not reliable.

Definitely not perfect, but still a cool camera
by Del Tanner (3 out of 5 stars)

So read all the reviews online before I bought this. I read all about the microphone noise, battery life, app glitchiness, etc. I initially decided to wait to buy one, but in the end my impatience got the best of me. I just received mine yesterday. So I only have a small amount of time with it thus far, but here is what I can tell you. As for battery life, yes, the battery only lasts an hour. But the manual states right in it that the battery will last "about 65 minutes". So it should be a surprise to anyone that you only get an hour out of it. Microphone noise: yeah it's bad. Don't plan on capturing good audio through this thing. I haven't tried an external mic which has been suggested by some users. But absolutely that feedback you've read is valid. I haven't experienced any glitches with the app. But I also have a Phantom 3 Pro that I use the app for, and it's been running fine for me. I have NOT done any firmware updates as most of what I've heard is that the problems most people are experiencing are actually based on the firmware updates. The camera is DEFINITELY not perfect, and has a few things to correct. But if you're an early adopter and can stick it out, it's still a great camera.

Great camera system
by Jordan M. Miller (4 out of 5 stars)

The build quality of the DJI Osmo is instantly apparent when you open the box. The carrying case, although it offers no room for anything other than the Osmo itself, is incredibly well built too. The camera works great too, although it has some struggles in low light and/or indoors where bright light is coming through windows, it performs well enough to use in professional applications. The software on the other hand needs work, which is the only reason I am not giving it 5 stars, it sometimes requires reconnecting and can be flaky.

Awesome Tool - more than satisfied
by jamoreno42 (4 out of 5 stars)

An amazing value for the price. Don't think that this camera is going to get you Hollywood quality imagery but it is more than serviceable for low budget filmmaking as well as live event and commercial uses. The fixed aperture and small sensor mean that you will need to consider how to control and know the limits of the cameras capabilities when it comes to lighting.

ND filters are a must for outdoor shooting and to control your highlights and also will allow you to shoot at the appropriate shutter speed.

Low light performance is so-so but figure that this will actually make you better at lighting and setting up your shots accordingly.

The wifi connection between the camera and mobile device works very well. But just be warned-4K streaming can be tricky at times and signal can drop. It's happened to me a few times so you have to just be cognizant of that.

Also be sure you don't turn on the unit until after your have released the motors which are stored in a locked position. Start by releasing the camera lock, then the gimbal and finally the arm. Then lock it in the same order after you've turned the camera off. The key here? Never lock the camera gimbal while it is turned on.

I highly recommend the extension arm and a separate audio source for clean audio capture. I use a set of Rode SmartLav units ($79 a piece) to capture audio from my talent and use the onboard mic just as scratch reference and audio sync. If you go for mounting a mic to your unit, be sure to get a directional mic that is self powered.

A screen shade is ideal as well as an add on to improve visibility of your phone screen during filming especially outside.

Mediocre product at best. Rushed for Christmas.
by T. Kramer (3 out of 5 stars)
November 30, 2015

It was not ready for prime-time. I think they rushed this to get it ready for Christmas 2015. The horizon never stays level. The dynamic range of light is pretty miserable, leaving interiors dark and windows completely blown out. The first firmware update was a complete bust, so much so that DJI completely recalled the firmware and had people start over at zero. In 6 or 8 months, sometime next year (2016) they may have a reasonable product, but right now, it is mediocre at best.
