Excellent kit, better customer service
by kenny (5 out of 5 stars)

This is an excellent kit. Before getting to the kit review, I must first say that a big reason for the 5 stars is due to their customer service. I ruined the instructions that came with it through my own clumsiness. I sent a message to the seller directly and received a response incredibly quickly with an electronic version of the instructions. I have found them to be very friendly and very responsive.

The instructions are clear, and I planted 4 seeds of each reserving the remainders for a second round if any failed to germinate. Germination can be a tricky beast. I was waiting to write my review until I had either successfully germinated all varieties, or if one or more failed to wait to see how customer support would handle it. All 4 have sprouted at least 1 plant now, and I used less than half of the seeds so I can do a second round and have even more plants.

I read several reviews that reported mold as a major problem. Please note that the potting material is organic material and will mold if left alone. Like bread, fruit, etc., etc. given time and the right conditions any potting soil will mold. I had great luck with mine keeping the pots in an area with diffused sun all day, good ventilation, and misted with water only when needed. One additional old-school tip for preventing mold: sprinkle a (very!) small amount of cinnamon on the surface after planting the seeds. It is a natural anti-fungal. And check the soil at least daily and simply lightly rub off any apparent mold with a fingertip when you see it.

EDIT: More photos, additional comments.

The plants are doing great. The Jacaranda is growing like a weed. All plants have at least started the first set of "real" branches. Zero mold issues, and apparently I can't stop the Bristlecone Pine from sprouting. I already removed one sprout. I can not stress how great this kit is!

Seeds must germinate for 90 days
by Laura Brittain (3 out of 5 stars)

It is a really cool idea and the items that come in the box are sturdy and up to standard. However, since it is a beginner kit, it would be nice if the seller let the buyer know that they need to germinate three out of four seeds for 90 days before it can be used. I was unaware of this and now we have two sets of seeds that need to stay in our fridge, and one in the freezer. They're small so Im worried about them getting lost in there, and it might be out of season by the time we are able to plant them. Just mentioning this on the information section of the item would be helpful so that people can prepare better or decide on a product that doesn't have such a long germination time.

Important! Misleading product, read carefully!
by Meraj Ahmed (1 out of 5 stars)

There is no such thing as "bonsai tree seeds", if that's the impression this product gives you. If you follow the instructions in this kit and do nothing more, you will simply end up with normal full-sized trees, NOT bonsai trees. "Training" a bonsai tree to stay small requires a lot more work over a long period of time. The provided instructions do not provide any information on how to do this. It literally just says to go look it up yourself. The kit itself is fine to get started, but it's definitely not worth $20. You could buy the seeds on your own for much less.

tl;dr - this kit will not automatically produce "bonsai" trees. save your money, just buy the seeds separately and do your own bonsai research.

I repotted them and all the seedlings look pretty happy. Delonix is the tricky one
by Chen (5 out of 5 stars)
March 20, 2018

I was skeptical at first but I did get seedlings from all four species. About 60% germination rate from seeds of Pinus and Picea, 30% from Jacaranda and Delonix. I repotted them and all the seedlings look pretty happy.

Delonix is the tricky one. The seeds were in the soil for 3 months without any sign of life while the other 3 species were growing well. I almost wanted to trash them (and give a 3-star review) then my partner made a last try by sawing the outer shells with a jagged kitchen knife. The attempt failed because the shells were extremely hard. We put them back to the pot and they enlarged dramatically (2-3 times) and germinated in the next 3 days. So I guess sawing did the trick! If your Delonix seeds seem dead, try sawing them a bit. But be careful, don't cut your fingers!

Greater than 100 percent success

Killed the first batch (forgot to water). Killed a second (accidentally used contaminated water). Now on the third batch from the same kit and they still pop up fast and in days. It seems they've forgiven me for killing their brethren.

I feel like the way the kit was described made it seem ...
by Rae B (3 out of 5 stars)

The kit is very cute and well put together, but it implies that it will be easier to plant and grow the seeds than I expected. Once you read the instructions in the box, you have to refrigerate some for 90 days, some will take two years and a transplant before they grow the berries, etc. I feel like the way the kit was described made it seem like a fun thing to grow in a window. It's not actually that.

A perfect gift or something to satisfy curiosity on the hobby!
by Kyle William (5 out of 5 stars)
November 27, 2016

Finally! I took the plunge and decided to get a kit for a hobby that has always intrigued me.

I wouldn't consider myself to have a green thumb, but I've been able to maintain a few potted plants in my apartment and love the idea of bonsai.

What I loved about this kit:
-It included everything in the description (I know some mentioned a missing manual, but mine contained a colored pamphlet with all of the instructions to get started).
-Getting set up was a breeze. I soaked the seeds in water and found the peat discs very easy to moisturize. They expanded into just the right amount of soil to fill up the biodegradable pots. This was all that was required!
-The kit is wonderfully designed. It looks great in the box that has illustrations on it. Would be perfect as a gift item.

What I didn't love about the kit:
-I just want to point out that this provides just enough information to get the seeds in the ground. The manual doesn't have any information on what to do after your trees begin sprouting. I'd highly recommend checking out a few books on Amazon for down the road when pruning becomes more important.

Not a great starter kit..
by Allan (1 out of 5 stars)

I followed the instructions including soaking and watering expectations, but 3 out of 4 seeds never germinated.

Furthermore, there are no instructions about what to do beyond the germination phase with your bonsai!

So far so good!
by Emily (4 out of 5 stars)

Patience is key. Some of the seeds have been taking a while to germinate, probably bc these poor little guys have a small sill to grow in. I also bought a seedling heating pad which helped immensely. All the 4 plants have sprouted, tho some only have one sprout so far. Pinus Aristata is by far the hardiest tho the delonix regia has been giving it a run for its money! Picea Mariana is looking the most delicate. I noticed today that the first Jacaranda sprout is going to get a buddy, there's another sprout pushing up.

I love growing plants and I've had some of mine for over a decade. I'm fairly good at growing from cuttings but don't often grow from seed so I was nervous and impatient. I'm glad I've kept it up tho bc I'm being rewarded with these cute baby plants! I only gave 4 stars because it's still unclear how well these will grow into "adult" trees. Obviously a lot rests on me to take care of them properly, but the strength of the seeds will also play a role.

I'm looking forward to having these awesome trees grow and blossom!!

Didn't follow the instructions, but its still grew....
by Kiyoko (5 out of 5 stars)

I have ADHD so of course I couldn't wait the 90 day germination period. I used germination trays with the soil from the package and planted the seeds. I fully expected to most likely not get any results since I didn't follow the instructions. However, 2 weeks later the seeds are sprouting. I don't recommend not following the instructions, but go ahead and ignore them if you live dangerously like me (just kidding).
