Product Description

Place this handmade insect hotel in your garden to attract a variety of insects, such as ladybugs, lacewings, bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. The natural looking house will adorn any flower garden very well. It has slightly larger size than usual, with 14-3/4" tall by 8" wide by 3-4/5" deep.

Installation tips:

The insect house should be set up in a sheltered spot away from the prevailing wind.

Solitary bees prefer a spot in direct sunlight, most other insects like it best when it's slightly damp.

If you have a large flower bed, pond or hedge where there is already abundant wildlife, you will find your hotel to be filled up quickly if sited near these areas.

Features

  • This lovely 14-3/4" tall x 8" wide x 3-4/5" deep insect hotel is made of natural bamboo pineal and pine wood.
  • There are many different kinds of rooms for insects to nest in.
  • The house attracts butterflies, bees and other insects that are beneficial to garden pollination.
  • A must-have for all nature lovers.

Yay! I have "guests" in my insect hotel!

I recently purchased two beneficial insect houses, and this was one of them. I consulted some online sites to find out more information about hanging location, as most people say location determines success. I found a spot at the far perimeter of my yard and decided to hang it from the fence. I used zip ties because I wanted to be able to move it easily in the event no insects used it where I chose to hang it. I threaded a zip tie through a seam in the roof of the house where there was a slight gap and it did not impact the house structure at all. For a couple of weeks I didn't notice anything and was a bit disappointed because my other beehouse seem to get activity right away. However just yesterday I was out in the yard and noticed that several of the tubes had been plugged with mud, an indicator that bees are utilizing it. I then saw a yellow jacket emerge from one of the tubes. I'm not sure how many photographs I'm able to attach, so I will try to post a photo showing the plugged up tubes. The insects use mud to do this, so water around your yard such as a bird bath will also help success. Overall the build quality of this item is quite good and the price is probably half of what this would cost at a garden center. I recommend it highly. I only wish it came in colors other than red because it's a little conspicuous in my yard. I think it would blend better being green or natural but that's just a trivial detail and my own preference.

Finally got action

I put this up months ago facing the south (sun) as directed. I became frustrated when a bee burrowed into my greenhouse beam and none in this but about a month after (now November in CA) there are multple larvae laid in the wood bores and some look to be multiple larvae deep. I observed a pine cone having a borehole in in and several days later, the pine cone leaf had been mutilated. Though I see no active insects on the cone, they are there; but, I don't know if they're beneficial or not. I'm looking at it and it seems that pine cones are actually a bad design because it helps breed bugs destructive to pine cones like moths, pine cone bugs, and Leptoglossus which is considered a pests.

In the future, I'd avoid the use of pine cones and maybe wood chips. I think that in the future, I'll just use the 1/4-1/2 inch boreholes in word to attract solitary bees.

I put this up less than a week ago and have 4 holes filled and even saw a little mason bee building inside one of the others. It works!

Hoping for some residents

My husband and I saw a bee house at a gift shop and thought it was a neat idea. After looking through the options here on Amazon we chose this one. I don't love the look of this one. There were some other ones that were cuter, but we chose this one because it was larger than the other ones I was considering. So far it doesn't look like any bugs have "moved in," but from our research that usually doesn't happen until the fall. I have my fingers crossed! Even if it doesn't really get used, it is still a fun piece to have in our garden.

A gift for my gardening mom. At 86 it is hard to find something she doesn't already have or thinks is useless. She loved this and it was in the garden with a day. She wants a few more - "just to make sure".

It is colorful and attractive but it is pure junk.

Very low quality construction. Ours has already had the "roof" break into little pieces after 6 months outside in a sheltered location in the garden.

The tube sizes are too small, in both diameter and length, for most bees that use that type of nest.

My wife and I do not recommend it to anyone for any reason.

A waste of money. We feel ripped off. We would return it were it not for the hassle.

Got two of these to give as Christmas gifts. They seem well made and both recipients were very happy with them. Only thing I would suggest is some kind of instruction on how to hang them, proper height and orientation for optimal use by bugs.

I thought this was a pretty cool idea. It is really well made, with good materials. It is smaller than expected, however. No bugs have taken up residence just yet. But I'm happy with the purchase.

Got it in the mail a few weeks back now. Looks exactly like the picture on the page. Pretty sturdy and was very easy to hang up outside on the fence. I've noticed some activity around mine after I planted some Bee Balm in pots around it. My only complaint/warning, don't open indoors. Some of the wood shavings come off it and it can be very messy. But, it does not impact the hotel in any way. You can't even tell when you look at it that any shavings came off at all. All and all, pretty solid.

Very simple and cute. I just hung it on a screw and it sits nicely on one of my deck legs above my flower garden.
