Product Description

The new Rockwell Duotech Oscillation Sonicrafter F80 is the first oscillating multi-tool that provides a choice of two oscillating angles: 5.0 o and 3.4 o. Users can choose the 5.0 o oscillating angle when projects require fast, aggressive cuts and quicker results, or the 3.4o angle for precision and continuous control. The versatile F80 works harder and faster than any other multi-tool, while enabling the user to choose the oscillating angle that best suits the job at hand. The handcrafted F80 can be used at a 5.0o oscillating angle with an end-cut blade to make short work of cross-cutting, ripping or making plunge-cuts in wood. Trim doorjambs or cut PVC. Then switch to the 3.4o angle to clip nail heads or cut metal pipe. Or using a rigid scraper blade, remove blistered paint, take rust from bare metal for priming or scrape and remove hardened caulk or adhesives. Clamp on a carbide grit semicircular blade to grind old grout from between floor or wall tiles. The cutting speed of the handcrafted F80 is five times faster than the basic Sonicrafter F50 (RK5121K). The F80, with an industry-leading maximum cutting load of 35 lbs. of force, can be pushed harder than any other multi-tool without stalling the blade.

Features

  • [POWER & PRECISION] Up to 19,000 oscillations per minute with 2 angles of attack: 5° for more power, 3.4° for more control on detail work
  • [1 TON OF CLAMPING FORCE] The tool-free Hyperlock blade change system prevents slippage while operating, no matter the angle, no matter the speed
  • [UNIVERSAL FIT] Accepts all major brand’s blades, sanders, and accessories for your convenience—but this kit comes with 10 blades, pads and sanders to get you started
  • [LED WORKLIGHT] Multitools like this are great for getting into tight spaces that full-size saws can’t get into. Now you can see what you’re doing when you get in there
  • [2-SPEED GEARING] Depending on the job or the material you can switch from 10,000 oscillations/min to 19,000, so you can do the job right
  • [POWERFUL 4.2-AMP MOTOR] Won’t stall under heavy loads, providing consistent power over the lifetime of the tool

How did I ever live without this thing?!
by Hoopy Frood (5 out of 5 stars)
November 10, 2017

I debated long and hard about getting the F50 or the F80. I've spent the entire 2017 season building all kinds of projects and I have needed an oscillating multi tool a couple of dozen times. I'm on a very limited budget so I've always found a work around. But doing so always made things far harder and take far longer than they would have, had I had this tool.

So I decided to bite the bullet and get one. I was going to buy the Harbor Freight/Chicago Electric el cheapo one for $25. But I knew this is a tremendously useful tool and didn't want to degrade the experience by just going for cheap. The Porter Cable solutions sound about as "robust" as the HF/CE solution, so if I was willing to spend the money required to get a Porter Cable, I knew I might as well just buy Rockwell.

The F30 was limited, although at a nice price point. The F50 had a lot of recent negative reviews, but sounded like it would probably get the job done. The F80 got such high praise (and basically no substantial negative reviews) that I ponied up the cash.

I'm so glad I did! The additional blades and case were wonderful, but the tool is fantastic! I've used older Dremmels for almost 20 years. They are insanely loud compared to the F80. I can't believe how little it vibrates at any speed! It's comfortable and surprisingly light.

The first time I used it I was cutting pieces of lath. I used the slowest speed and - while I am a habitual user of hearing protection - it was so quiet I didn't put on the ol' ear muffs. Now I would recommend users always use hearing and eye protection! But I thought it was an interesting data point that it was THAT quiet.

I've used this for cutting several times since. It's amazing how precise it is with the 3.4 degree setting! I was shocked at how easily and precisely it can do plunge cuts as well. It helps to score your cut with one of the rigid round blades first if you want to make use of one of the straight blades in the bulk of the cut (the Japanese blade can clear sawdust quickly so you can do deep cuts fast with it - but it doesn't start a plunge with a lot of precision).

There are only two reviews that complain about a failure after 3-6 months. The reviews give no details so who knows how "defective product" and/or "operator error" factored in those failures. However this comes with a 3 year warranty so both of those failures would have been covered.

Price, performance, value

I have been using Fein Multimaster tools on the job since 1996. Recently, my truck was ransacked and when I looked into purchasing a new Fein brand oscillating tool I learned that they had changed their blade design and I could no longer use aftermarket blades. I decided to look into an alternative that would use the many blades that I still had. I purchased the Sonicrafter F80 after looking at all the other brands on Amazon. Price, amperage, and the selectable 3.5 or 5 mm oscillation were the primary factors in my decision. This tool outperforms the Fein brand tools I used in the past by a large margin using the same cutters. For instance, on the 5 mm setting at the lowest motor speed (1) it cuts at a much faster rate than my former tool did at its fastest motor speed. I can always select the 3.5 mm stroke for more precision and delicacy. I believe that the high clamping pressure achievable with the Porter Cable blade blade mount system contributes greatly to the efficient performance. It does take a bit longer to change blades since you must spin the lever until it is sufficiently tightened and then flip it down as opposed to the simple flip up to release and down to lock systems. However, In my judgement , the ability to precisely control the clamping pressure on the blade and thereby eliminating any slippage when the tool is engaged in a cut is the very feature that makes this tool work so well. I don't think that there is any other similar tool on the market that can use just about any of the available blades that would outperform this one. In my opinion the RK5151k is the best value in oscillating tools.

Highly recommend.

Great tool. Easy to load blades, performs as advertised. Cuts straight and very easy to use. Blades wear quickly, but this is exactly what I would expect. This is a specialty tool and should be used for cuts you cannot do with other tools. This unit has the largest motor, and once you use it, you can see that it doesn't load, doesn't get hot, and has great balance.

This thing is the bomb....

Prior to this I had the Dremel which lasted approximately 3 yrs. It was loud but worked ok. It died last week and I needed one ASAP so I decided to upgrade to this Rockwell 4.2 amp. And I'm glad I did. This thing has way more power and has been cutting though thick hardwoods like butter. I design and build custom cabinetry and during a kitchen install last week i was making cuts I would have never done with the dremel.

In general these tools are amazing. Probably the greatest new tool since the saws-all. I just couldn't imagine working without one. I use it all the time during cabinet installations. This unit is muck quieter than the dremel but I still wear hearing protection. It doesn't vibrate nearly as much so it's much easier on the hand. I wish it came with the soft bag rather than the hard plastic case which I usually toss since it wont fit very well in to my tool chest.

Great Tool - Locking Mechanism Is A Bit Of A Challenge
by NeverGrewUp (3 out of 5 stars)
April 14, 2018

Seems like a good quality tool with nice features, but it has one quirk that needs to be mentioned, for those who may not be super tool savvy - and that is that the lock lever on top is 'adjustable' as far as how tight it is going be when it is turned to the lock position and locked in place. The square part of the locking screw (under the head - like a carriage bolt) will change the position of the locking lever and thus, how tight it is going to lock. It could be so loose that the blade will come loose immediately while the tool is running, or it could be so tight you can't get it in the right position to lock it. Different blade thicknesses will also be a factor...... Loosening the locking screw until the square is visible (where the tool goes) and then rotating the square 90 degrees will change the amount of tightness, and allow you to get the PROPER amount of tightness so that the screw will be tight enough to hold the blade securely while it is running. I've used power tools for 50 years, and it took a bit of fussing to figure it out, and get it right.
FYI - I had a blade that was dull, so I turned it into a serrated knife, and used it to cut up some nasty hard outdoor carpet (like plywood hard!!) that was impossible to cut with a razor knife. This tool blasted through the job in minutes, and saved a LOT of grunting and time!!!

INOPERABLE LATCH ON CASE, AND NO RESOLUTION
by DEL (1 out of 5 stars)
September 6, 2018

UPON RECIEPT ONE OF THE LATCHES ON THE CASE WAS UNLATCHED . WHEN WE TRIED TO LATCH IT, IT WOULD NOT LOCK, THEREBY MAKING THE CASE POSSIBLY TO OPEN AND THE TOOL FALL OUT . WHEN WE CONTACTED ROCKWELL AT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER LISTED ON THE UNOPENED PACKING I WAS TOLD THAT THE THREE YEAR WARANTEE WAS ON THE TOOL AND NOT ON THE CASE
. I ASKED IF THEY CAN REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE CASE WITH THE BAD LATCH, HE SAID NO!! SO WHAT DO WE DO NOW?

Impressive tool.

This thing is powerful. I actually carved a recess in brick, ( it was old soft brick, but still that's pretty impressive), for a deep outlet in a baseboard. This thing didn't even flinch. You just need to use the right blade and you are good to go. I went thru two Bosch battery powered oscillating tools. One still works and I will use it if it's convenient to not have a cord, but it is no match for the sheer power of this Rockwell tool. Impressive.

Great tool with the power to cut
by rennan (5 out of 5 stars)
February 3, 2017

Great tool with the power to cut. I had a 12V Dremel MultiMax that I bought because I thought it would suit my needs and it also used the same 12V batteries as my rotory tool. It strained to cut drywall. I've used this tool in ways that I would never have imagined until I got this very versatile and powerful tool. Many times I will grab this tool before grabbing the Sawzall.

The ability to change the oscillation from 3.4° to 5° is one of the things that makes it more versatile. The toolless blade change is another great feature that the MultiMax was missing. Variable speed and a compact tool case that holds the tool and blades. Also has a nice long cord.

Great tool. Buy it!

COMPLETE SATISFACTION
by Dave B (5 out of 5 stars)
November 28, 2017

I would hate to just write that this is an AWESOME machine but that would be an accurate all inclusive description of this Sonicrafter. The power that is available from the machine certainly is there to complete your task. The sonicrafter comes with a handful of blades and a circular grinder. There is enough to get started but I opted to get a few more just to have the variety available. I found the blades are expensive and you will want to take good care of them and use the right blade for the task at hand. The blades are very easy to change in the machine and stay in there securely. All this and it comes in a nifty, cool little box. I am so happy with this machine I bought one for my brother and he is like a kid in a candy store finding reasons to use his Sonicrafter.

So far so good. I have a dremel and a porter cable
by ShauntK (5 out of 5 stars)
February 1, 2018

So far so good. I have a dremel and a porter cable... this is noticeably slimmer and lighter... makes much less sound than either of the other two... the universal blade fitment is a true universal blade platform, it can take virtually any blade without any adapters :)

the sanding pad is a bit smaller than the other brands, but no big deal... otherwise, i am excited to use it!!!!!

UPDATE!!! I used it for a job this weekend and it was great!! The blade did get loose once, because the locking mechanism is with pressure and not with the teeth, so I just tightened a bit more and it was perfect. The box is pretty mince too cause I was able to fit my other blades in it and it's convenient to access.

So far very happy, I hope it lasts as long as my dremel (almost 9 years)
