FANTASTIC SELFIE DRONE
by Susan L (5 out of 5 stars)
September 19, 2017

Let me preface this review by saying that I have used a fair number of drones in the past - DJI, Air selfie, a bunch of Hubsans and an Eachine. Obviously each drone has its own purposes, advantages and disadvantages. The Hover camera is an amazing drone. I love everything about it. Its light yet strong. Its packable. The perfect thing to take on a vacation. The battery last 10 minutes, which is good enough to take some great videos and pictures. The controls are just incredible. For the follow your owner version, you don't even need a phone. It follows you around like a puppy. The quality of the videos and pictures are excellent. Its not too noisy. The battery takes only a few minutes to recharge. It comes with 2 battery's and one can buy more. Its perfectly safe to hold while the blades are running.

I was looking for a selfie drone that I could take with me when I am travelling. I bought the Air Selfie (selling it now, if anyone is interested). The quality of pictures on the Air selfie are very very poor. The battery last an extremely short time. By time I get to adjust it for a good angle, the battery is dead. It does not have the face recognition feature.

WHAT A MESS
by BraveInternetGuy (3 out of 5 stars)

I paid for a brand new Hover Camera yet found footage of another customer and his daughter flying the drone stored on the device. Not so brand new after all!

I also paid $500 for this product yet days after the price dropped to $350.

Why was I not reimbursed the difference, and why does Amazon allow sellers to send customers refurbished products after advertising them as brand new?

As for the drone itself-

Flys great. Steady. Hovers perfectly. Outstanding features. However, facial recognition is not precise. So if you are flying within a crowd, expect the drone to be confused during Owner Mode. Also, be careful flying near sunset. It will malfunction and possibly crash. Sunset was approaching and my drone lost control and rammed into a neighbor's second story condo then fell onto their car! There was no property damage; just cosmetic damage to the drone. Compared to the other drones on the market, this is hands down the safest one out there. Just be careful flying in dimly lit areas under windy conditions and you'll be fine. I flew this when it was semi-windy and it just dropped from the sky (granted the device did give me a warning about the conditions). Now each time I hover above 30 feet I feel nervous it'll drop out of the sky.

Overall, fun drone with impressive hover control and quality 4k camera capability. However, something needs to be done about this merchant and their unprofessional, underhanded treatment of customers.

What not to do!
by Rob (3 out of 5 stars)

You will be temped to start with owners mode right out of the box.

I did this at home in the evening with average indoor lighting, big mistake.

First, owner mode sucks, if you don't set it up precisely it won't work. I launched expecting it to follow me but it went wild, blew all paper and small items off the table and flew straight towards my flatscreen TV! My heart skipped a couple of beats and luckily it collided with the wall inches away. No damage to the drone. My advice is, experiment with it outside or if in-doors do it during the day with all shades up.

I would advice to master the manual controls first and practice with the first couple of battery charges. Use the classic mode if you're all thumbs like me. Practice moving the drone up and down and tilt the camera down, do not look at the drone but at your screen otherwise it'll be an exercise in frustration. Take a few pictures manually, select the 3 sec. delay and look up. Otherwise the pics will be of you looking down at your phone.

I you're having a hard time to get the drone in the right position move yourself and position in front of the camera then take the picture.

Well, this is my first experiences playing with this drone. It is not as easy to fly as advertised. Practice at home indoors or out before taking it on vacation and loosing it at the edge of a cliff or destroying your best friends large screen TV.

Nice drone for everyone

Got this drone for my girlfriend and it's really really amazing. It's incredibly compact and so light that I can easily tug it into the bag and go. Initially, the casing seemed quite redundant to me but after a couple of runs, this design is amazing. The casing perfectly protects me from the spinning rotors and it's so safe that I can put my face near Hover when it's flying. With this protection, it's quite simple to get some nice, closer, upper-angle shots.

Great portable selfie camera!
by Geary Chew (4 out of 5 stars)

Got it "used" from Amazon warehouse which is my recommended place to get used/refurbished items because it's backed by Amazon on returns. Memory still had one video of previous owner. This was actually good since it indicated very little wear. The unit is at best a wireless selfie camera which that's all I expected it to be. It does hover as advertise. The facial recognition was not that great but it does recognize you when using a phone to take a "orbit" shot around me from above. It will also take 360 (while hovering in one location) video but since it doesn't have GPS, the positioning is just the bottom/down sensor and vision software it's a bit shaky. The fully enclosed cage protects your fingers and propellers. But the added air restrictions adds to more flying noise. It's very light (240 grams) so no registration required. It's so portable that I can pull it out of my pocket and in less than a minute it could be deployed into the air, snap a quick video or snapshot, and back into my hand, folded and back into my pocket before anyone seen where it came from! However since it's so light it can be blown by the wind but it does "fight" the wind a bit to hover. One occasion it almost got flipped over but sensed the tilted position and self righted itself. Be careful flying indoors with low ceilings because if you fly over someone's head the bottom sensor will detect "object too close" and will hover up hitting your ceiling. No big deal because of the protective cage but makes annoying noise against the ceiling. Very short 9 minute battery life but comes with two batteries. The unit has an XT30 battery power connectors so technically you can attach your own larger capacity 7.2 v batteries for additional flying time. For the $196 that I paid it's worth the foldable carbon fiber chassis with a 4K selfie camera. I would highly recommend buying it refurbished at this price but at the original list price you'll be better off with a DJI Spark or similar product but you cannot beat the folding portability of this "selfie cam"

For selfies and videos this is the champ!

Amazing drone for the price, you just select the person to follow in the app and it will follow you, great wind resistance for its size. It is foldable and lightweight, nice for pictures and videos. Amazing quality on pictures and videos, amazon video wont show even half of its quality. It flies itself much better than expected, even better than the manual mode, can stand strong winds but it will lean and your videos will show tilted, can't ask for more at this price point. This is a selfie drone, not an fpv or trick drone, it does its job, there are many different drones out there, selfie, fpv, trick, gymbal, long distance, you have to choose the one that fits your needs.

Also, you can give the altitude you want to be followed with, pictures with bird eye are amazing, everyone will ask you how you took them.

And the app has a great video editing section, very easy to use.

Only downside is battery, it comes with 2 batteries, nice fast charger, 1 hour to charge, but they last 10 minutes. For me 20 min of video is enough, will buy extra batteries if I find them under 40 dollars.

loved it. Past tense. Past tense because the last time I saw it. it was flying sideways at top speed straight over a Home Depot in Auburn Al. So sad...

won't pair with phone. app is completely useless. customer service is non existent. documentation provided is for another planet. returned and bought a Lily, which is which I should have done to begin with, I just hope it comes in time for my vacation. Guess that's what I get for trying to save a few bucks. You get what you pay for.

Nice drone
by Doyya (5 out of 5 stars)

I have been using hover camera drone for days and it works pretty well. I took it to my family reunion and everybody was amazed by it. The hovering function and the protection really fansinated every one and kids were crazy about it. Overall, the wow effect is crazy. However, the condition has to be more well-controlled.

We took it out to the woods once and the hovering doesn't work out quite well, but overall, it works as it advertised. Still, will be great that the protective case is included. I was told that the portable case was not sold as a standalone accessory when it was launched, but now we have to pay for that separately.

An excellent, fun flying camera with software glitches and range limits
by Tom D (3 out of 5 stars)
September 18, 2017

When everything works correctly, I'd give this 5 stars for ease of use and picture quality. I took one star off for software glitches and another star off for a combination of the price at $500 and the range limit of about 60 feet. For reasons neither I understood, nor they explained, I was able to buy this for less than half of retail at a local electronics store; it was the only one they had.

This is controlled via WiFi through a smartphone. If it goes beyond about 60' and loses communication it stops where and as it is until the battery runs out. The battery is good for 6 to 8 minutes; there is an indicator on the screen. The instructions it comes with are inadequate so you'll need to get on YouTube, and just try the options. The good news is it is light, relatively sturdy, remarkably stable and moves at modest speeds so you have to work to crash it. Some of the commands and controls are intuitive, but not all; aiming the camera for example isn't obvious and the directional controls sometimes seem backwards. Up and down are the only commands that are intuitive and consistent.

The batteries charge relatively quickly, 15 to 30 minutes, but the instructions warn you not to charge them until they've cooled down. The batteries get hot in use so I've been going with a 15 minute cool down and then charge. The charger handles both batteries simultaneously, so in general, you're looking at 30+ minutes between charges and 14 minutes flying time with the total of 2 batteries.

The pictures are terrific. The software glitch is that the camera may hoard them. Sometimes the pictures show up on the cell phone in the camera directory, sometimes in the phone's "gallery" and sometimes they stay in the drone and you have to turn it on, link it to your phone and go through a "memory management" download of each file. Several times while flying, even at close range without obstructions, the drone and camera have lost link. The drone freezes in place and the software goes through a connection process; it can take multiple tries and 2 minutes. This seems to be common to many drones.

There are a lot of drone choices, but it's tough to find one with the camera quality of the Hover Passport.
